I know that it's important to balance grinding wheels for surface grinders but not bench grinders. I can't really tell what this thing is to tell you the truth.

8" bench grinder wheel balancing questions

I had a simple fixture made out of angle iron. Can't find it since my move. Need to build another one.

I got plans from the home shop machinist magazine. I don't know if I can locate the issue at the moment.

The wheel on my grinder is balanced now and they last a long time for me, so building a new one hasn't been top priority.

My magazines are amongst 40 unsorted HDX totes in my basement. I'll try to find them but I have been super busy. May take me a bit.

Let me know if your interested.

Never had a problem, but also don't buy cheap junk grinding wheels, try clocking the wheels.

If you grinder motor isn't out of balance or has a bent shaft, quality wheels shouldn't need balancing on an 8" bench grinder.

Normally isn't it just enough to keep the wheel dressed?

The wheel must run true before a dresser will do any good. You can use some strips of tape to shim the washers to minimize wobble (there are youtube videos on how to do this). After that, you need a fixed diamond(s) and some rudimentary fixture to remove any eccentricity. Once the wheel runs true, the grinder should run very smooth, and light dressing will maintain it.

Ah, ok. I guess I was just under the impression that most wheels new out of the box ran pretty true. I'm definitely not very experienced with bench grinders though, just use them for lightly touching up parts, etc.
