It's a classic story. I was quite happy in my garage. It's a nice 3+ car in Midwest suburbia. Two spaces for the daily drivers (that Honda Odyssey is a big vehicle), and the rest split between the kids, the lawn and the hobby. And then I started lurking here on GJ. 12 gauge garage, Mech33, and many others, man-o-man what delightful places their garages seem to be.
I'm at the beginning of this renovation. The goal, as I suspect it was to many before me, is not wholesale change but gradual improvement as opportunities and additions present themselves. I don't know the destination but the ride should be fun...

Here's the starting point. Old kitchen cabinets, old closet shelves, plywood top and various boxes bought over the years.

To start, the bench was falling apart, the old kitchen cabinets have given all they have. So, I did what anyone would do and went to Mendelson's. "What's Mendelson's", you ask? Mendelson's is a huge old warehouse in Dayton, Ohio. They have the most eclectic mix of furniture, restaurant equipment, and factory items I've ever seen. And I found this...

Beneath around 9 pounds of grease and oil, are two Vidmar cabinets and a maple top. Much cleaning, sanding and painting needs to be done, but this should be a nice foundation for the new bench. Not quite sure what to do with the right one with the pull out shelves, but for $425, I wasn't going to quibble.

Ahhhh...Mendelsons! I'm in Dayton and used to spend many, many Saturday's in that place. Even though they are somewhat of a shell of what they used to be, I'm convinced there is nothing you can't find in that place if you look long enough. Sandy Mendelson doesn't even know what's in that place. I remember when 200 MB hard drives cost a couple hundred bucks I came across a box of a dozen of them. They were marked as bad but STILL IN WARRANTY. Bought the box for twenty bucks and sent them all in. Sold them for 150 each.

Years ago deals were everywhere. Now, things are priced kind of high and ebay-craigslist has kind of supplanted them on small items. I think I'll head down there this weekend.

At this early stage of my garage renovation. Disaster struck. I made the mistake of reading about lifts. I had looked and thought about them before, of course. My brother has a four poster but that is too big for my space. Another friend has a set of MaxJax, very cool, but not quite right either. But here, on GJ, people are using scissors. They are installing them in floors, building ramps around them, laying tile on top of them. Car, motorcycle and even lawn mower work is made easier. Some lift from the middle of the car, some lift by the sills. Some have a solid tops and some are more open. Chinese, American, European even Canadian built lifts are represented.

It's an older model with mechanical locks. It was for sale by an absolutely delightful older gent and his son-in-law. Now it is waiting in line for the Vidmars to be finished, so I can sort out some electricity for it and clean it up a little. Maybe paint, who knows.
GJ is a dangerous place.

A great idea. Unfortunately, the neighborhood association doesn't allow detached sheds. I've been wandering around the outside of the homestead to find enough unbroken wall to erect an attached one, but so far, no dice.

You won't regret it. Just bring a truck or van to take stuff home. They'll help load it. There is a nice coffee place called "Press" a couple of blocks away. Also worth a stop.

I'm surprised my daughter hasn't told me about that place. She lives in Dayton and my son-in law would be all about a place like that.

Be careful. When I picked up the cabinets, I walked by this View media item 57970Looked like fun and it cleaned up nicely. The picture is of it as I brought it home. The surface rust on the table came right off with a soak in Evaporust. Now it looks like new.

Yes. Not as much as I would like. Made it out 3 times last year. Final time was National Corvette Museum, and I blew oil, cracked the radiator and cooked the brakes. So it's been in the garage since adding heat control. That was the impetous for the lift, tired of jack stands. Goal this year is the Run-Offs.

BCreekDave nailed it. Use to be a weekend thing just to check out the bargains. Now, not so much. Seem to think that everything is way more valuable then I think it is. :eyecrazy:

Thanks, I think they're going to work out great. I'm just giving them clean and quick rattle can respray.

I have never heard of mendelsons. I guess there is a reason to go to Dayton.

Yes, it's quite heavy at almost 1000 pounds but it picks itself up on 3 removable casters and then I can shove it pretty well. Or better yet, have my son shove it. I think I have a long enough power cord set up to use it outside in the drive if needed.

That would be great, there isn't much on the web about these in English. Mendelson's is worth a trip. If you decide to go, there are actually 2 buildings to explore, one on each side of the parking lot.

Unfortunately, like many on this forum, I couldn't leave well enough alone and found these two Stor-Loc cabinets on CL. They need a thorough degrease and clean up. Maybe a spray job as well. Of course, my counter top will be too short...

Thanks for the kind words. The top has worked out great. The old one has a great patina from the Greenville SC machine shop where it spent its first life. The new end has matched it up really well. I just used wax to protect the raw wood.
