Snap-On HP Box Wrenches

I am looking at buying some of these and am trying to decide between the 15 degree and zero degree offset models. Does anyone own either of these styles? Any recommendations? Most of my current wrenches have an offset (from 75 to 7.5 degrees) on the box end so I am strongly leaning toward the zero offset style. Just looking for validation/trying to see if anyone could talk me out of the zero offset style. I am particularly attracted by the extra long length of these wrenches in the fixed box end configuration and am mainly looking at metric sizes to compliment by GW SAE XL Gearbox set. I own the Armstrong version of these in metric and really like them, but they are quite a bit shorter than the SO and GW offerings. I have considered buying the GW set in metric but I am not all that impressed with these. As I mentioned in another post, the fixed box ends are rather thin and while I have not broken one yet, I fully expect them to snap every time I put some serious torque on them. Does anyone have both the SO and GW Gearbox wrenches to compare box end thickness? Obviously, I am hoping that the SO’s are a little thicker and inspire more confidence while in use. I have the zero offset style and they are great for reaching otherwise inaccessible nuts or bolts. They are really long and strong.

+1 on the zero offset. There are times that they are the only thing that will reach without removing a bunch of ****.

Those are some nice wrenches. I had both styles at the last job for tightening ferry bolts on a blow mold. They are very long, and super thin walled. I used the standard 12 pt and also the spline style. They both work nice. I want to say that the 3/8 - 7/16 was about a foot long.

I would get the 0 offset also. Like I mentioned, the box end is probably the thinnest I've ever seen, but they were used daily to adjust the mandrels on a blowmold, and they stood up to a lot of abuse. I don't think they would make the handle so long if they didn't have confidence in the box.

I have a zero-offset double-box and the ring diameters are really small. From what I've gathered, they all tend to be like that.

We're talking about regular, long-reach double-box wrenches; nothing to do with ratcheting wrenches.

Go with the 0 degree long snap on's, you wont be disappointed, I've got them in metric and std. and they go where others won't. And to boot they are thin and strong.

I am okay with thin box ends as long as they are really strong. Glad to hear this is the case from those with first hand experience.

Cheater pipes prohibited, but wail on the end with a hammer, or wedge a prybar against it all you want. I've done both.

The 15* application is covered by standard combination wrenches. Linking two together, they're maybe a hair longer than these are.

I own the Matco zero-offset XL ratcheting set in 10-19mm, and they are the most-used wrenches in my box... out of over a hundred total. Pick a quality brand, and buy 'em. You won't regret it.

Good thread as I have had these 'on the list' too and I have been debating the zero degree and 15 degree offset too.

I agree with the zero offset recomendations. I just bought the Cornwell version in metric. 300.00 set on sale for 250.00. This month the 200.00 sae set is on sale for 150.00. I have the sae set on order. I have become very fond of Cornwell tools in the past few months. The wrenches are so smooth and well balanced. The chrome finish is flawless. What do you mean 'linking two together'?

I believe this means to put the open end of the wrench on the fastener into the box end of a second wrench to increase the length of pull that you have.

I usually like the offset, because it provides room for my knuckles and fingers to wrap around. If your up against something flat, the zero's seem to make you work harder. With the SO hp's, they are long enough to get you out of the way.

If you pick them up you are done. I did and now look, more chrome to wipe down and it gets covered in grease and oil. What a life, I would not have it any other way.

If I remember correctly the Cornwell version is just as long an the Snappy's and at a lower cost. I am really happy with mine and do not regret the decision one bit. My choice should in no way effect the decision of others. If the Snappy's are what you want then go for it. Either way you WILL NOT be disappointed.

I did not take a shot last night of the beam difference but I will be glad to measure the thickness of the beams with a micrometer if anyone needs that info.

Wow, those Cornwell wrenches are truly a thing of beauty. The box ends appear to have the perfect thickness for an ideal strength/access balance and the length is fantastic. The only issue I have with Cornwell is availability. I have never seen a truck in this area and you cannot order from their website.

Now I want to see pics of the Snap-On's.

I have the Snap-on 0 degree set, very handy. I use them all the time, mostly because of the added torque from their length.

That is true. The Cornwell box is centered and the Snappy is offset. I thought about the difference and decided that the Cornwell version was what I wanted. I do plan on getting a Snappy in the 24mm. This is beacuse the Cornwell's do not get any larger than 22mm.

Even though the sale has passed, do you think he would still consider selling the metric set for $250? If so, I think I would have to jump at that deal. At $250, the Cornwell set is not only more complete than the SO set, but also less coin. And they are longer.

Also, you guys made an excellent observation on the box ends that isn't always obvious in a catalog. Sometimes I wish there was a pro truck superstore where you could go to compare product side by side.

I can only speak to my X-Long Cornwell Combos: Yes - Beam is very nicely rounded (like it better than SO) and the balance is perfect.
