While doing my "At least one thing" in the shop tonight I was replacing a headlight in a 1972 Cougar. Big sealed beam sucker that had me taking half the grille off and trim rings and springs and such. Well I reached for a set of needle nose pliers and noticed they were badly sprung, so I grabbed another pair to finish the job.

Broke a trim ring, but I have spares, launched a spring but finished up O.K..

As I prepared to drop the pliers in the trash I had a thought. I put a washer in the jaws just past the cutter part and squozed it in the vise! Figured the worse that could happen is they break, explode and put out an eye. Second try and they meshed up PERFECT!! I spent a minute or 2 just picking up nails, washers and other little stuff!

I rigged a chuck from an old cordless drill with some odd nuts and bolts of different sizes so I could use it on the end of the arbor of my bench grinder. I really thought I had it when I put a big cone on there... I'd go easy till I knew everything was cool.
Then I got hit in the head with this
6bd55569f548c7387e81ed90c460ecd2.jpg
Struck my glasses and forehead... gotta strawberry in addition to a nice brow cut(maybe worth 2or3 stitches if I wasn't all scars already).
Stupid. Plain and simple. Be careful.

I replaced the lo-beam headlight lamp on my 2011 Seirra. What a mess just to replace a bulb! Whatever happened to just pulling two pins to pop the headlight assembly out? I replaced the passenger side bulb two days ago and had to take the air filter box out to get to the bulb. That was bad enough, but the driver side is even worse. No way to reach the back side of the fixture to get the bulb out. Had to remove so much stuff just to get to the last bolt.....

Just usual variety of canned degreasers and brakleen. Some nylon brushes, toothbrushes, and a bronze-bristle toothbrush for the stubborn spots.
Funny you mention those discs, I'd never heard of them until just recently, watching 'eric the car guy' youtube vids. I'd been using scrapers and razor blades (and the aforementioned toothbrushes).

the 'MkII' iPad rack. I beefed up the hinge / pivot end with an extension. A future 'MkIII' will have this hinge end be a solid piece, rather than two bonded together. And the mounting bracket will be made of hardwood or at least poplar.

This is a great idea. Any details how the iPad goes in it ?

I put a new spring in an old pair of Craftsman locking pliers. There was no way that I was going to warranty exchange these USA pliers for the new China junk.

What a great thread!! Just found this site recently and am hugely impressed at the projects and garage mods. Once I figure it all out I'll quit lurking and start posting.... Anybody work on their bass boats in their garages over the winter?

I SOOOO NEED TO DO THIS!

Then again perhaps the lack of TV access in the shop is better for my marriage!

It was $138 on sale, nothing high dollar or fancy, just a Proscan LED TV. The wife knows I'm in the garage, she's always welcome in the garage, it keeps me home and not out and about while she is home..... but keeps me out of her hair. lol.

Like my FIL told my wife when we first got married, "better into cars than in the bars."

Don't forget, BG's temperatures are Celsius not Fahrenheit. -25C = -13F and -33C = -27.4F. Not quite as bad but still damned cold.:(

Not exactly "in", but went to pick up some storage shelves today. Looked all wood in the CL post, turned out that had a complete 1.5" steel tube frame (bonus!) but also meant they weighed a ton. Guy used a forklift to put them on the truck.

Also picked up some signs he had laying around, for free:

So those will be fun hanging around!

Steve, A buddy had a company cast off parts rack/bins somewhat like that years back. He used it as a divider from the "shop" part of his garage, and the "laundry/Freezer" area.

Outlaw, that's a way to use them - these came from a fencing company that had moved and left a bunch of old steel and shelving on site. New owner is selling it off and said I could come back in a few weeks to pick through the scrap steel (woo). These also need a bit of repair but for $40 they're going to hold a LOT of stuff.

My son and I walk the train tracks behind the house and I have buckets of bounced-out spikes, plates and j-shaped hooks (my rule for the kids is we only pick up stuff bounced out into the gravel off the tracks. No cheating and pulling out loose spikes!) I'm going to sort the stuff we have, plus a bunch of other scrap steel that I use for welding projects.

Hey Bodyguy, no prob. I didn't realize it was in "C"
-33C = -27.4F
-25C = -16 F

Still colder than here!

Texted brother in law this morning and asked if he was going ice fishing. He texted back he was going to take a ride on his snowmobile but too cold for that too.

So far we have made it to an even "0F" here.

Hung my chain fall and broke my snowmobile. Now I'm headed to my buddy's garage to "unbreak" my sled.

Looks like it slides in through the open end opposite of the hinge.

Yes, exactly. Leaves the speakers unmasked. Had considered a top slot like a toaster, but would have to make enough relief cuts for the speakers that I just changed it up and put the opening on the side instead. One opening serviing both purposes.
I may line the U-groove with felt to preclude scratching. But I use our old iPad1 in this, it's already a little shabby. It's sized to also fit our iPad2. the iPad 1 is the same length, 3/16" wider (than the 2) across the face, and about twice as thick.

Today I reupholstered the sunroof shade panel out of my '02 Suburban. fabric foam had broken down, baking in a black suburban for 14yrs. Previous owner had put in a ceiling mounted rear-seat TV, but the system was dead when I bought it. I pulled out much of the system but the TV mount left a huge hole in the headliner so I put it back in. I must have driven the screws in to far as subsequently the sunroof shade apparently snagged and started peeling the fabric off.
Real easy to take out the sunroof, (4) T25 screws and it lifts right out. Then you can slide the panel into the closed position and pry out 4 edge clips out of the rail.
Some work to remove the degraded foam, some shopping and a bit of work, and almost good as new.

Super77 and 90 are not sufficient for such a high-heat application. I expect the headliner adhesive to work.

It was -26*C (-14.8 for you southerners) so I limited garage time to discussing with my wife how "we need to insulate the garage so I can heat it". Then I proceeded to get my stones out and sharpened the blade on my multi tool on the kitchen table. She didn't bite, but this time she didn't argue - this is progress.

My garage beer fridge shot craps earlier this week. Had some meat in the freezer that we would feed the dogs once in a while (livers / hearts / soup bones / all the fun stuff).
Fridge must have quit a day or two before I realized it, and that meat was pretty rancid.

So today, I went out rolled it outside, took out all my beer and rinsed it off in a cooler for about 10 minutes, and left the doors on fridge / freezer open to the wind outside. I'm not even gonna try to clean it until tomorrow.

Not sure what's wrong with it but seems there is no power to anything.

Then, I sat in hous for half the day reading Garage Journal.
