Advance Auto Parts has Gearwrench 3/8 rachets on sale for $10.00 off in their current add. You have the choice of the 3/8 teardrop, 3/8 teardrop flex, or the quick release 3/8 teardrop flex rachet. I was thinking about the quick release since I only have one flex rachet, and it's not a quick release. I have a set of the gearwrench wrenches which seem to be well made, what does everybody think of the rachets?

I have used them, test drove them from another tech, and can't say that I really thought much of them. They seemed a bit clunky and sloppy. They seemed strong enough but nothing remarkable. I think that if they weren't so expensive they would make for great junk yard tools.

BTW, do you have the regular of ratcheting wrenches.

I have the 3/8" teardrop. I never use it. It's no better than a Harbor Freight ratchet. It's worth no more than $10.

i am an sk fan and would recommend their pro, tuff one or palm control rathets. if you want a pearhead ratchet i highly reccomend proto big dawg ratchets i currently have 5 versions and am always on the prowl for ones i do not have. if you are patient they can be found reasonable on ebay. 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 could be collected for under 60 dollars.

I thought the gearwrench ratchets were 60 tooth and similar to the Craftsman thin profile?

I thought they were getting good reviews when they first hit the shelves. Amazon has a three piece set for $82 which would be about $27 per. What's Advanced prices like?

I'll second sk farmer. It's hard to beat SK's for the price, usually in the mid 30's.

I have pro's, tuff 1's, and palm control and they have all worked great.

You are correct that the ratcheting mechanism is the same. However, I have both and would say that the GW models are bulkier and the fit/finish is not as good. The drive tang also seems a little loose on the GW versions.

Perhaps there is a quality difference since moving alot of Gearwrench production from Taiwan to the PRC. I use and abuse my Taiwan made Gearwrench 1/4 and 3/8 drive flex head ratchets with comfort grips daily with no complaints. The 60 tooth action is still crisp and tight as the day I bought them over two years ago. There's no play or bulk. In fact their ratchet heads are very thin for better access. That would really **** if the quality has dropped.:wtf:

I'm not sure if most are aware that Gearwrench has 2 very different lines of ratchets. The ones typically found online are the Danaher 60 tooth design. They are well reviewed on here.

The crappy 36 tooth line is hard to find online - only on ebay or locally at the auto parts stores. These look the same as any other budget import. The 36 tooth ones are commonly quick release, but there is no quick release 60 tooth Gearwrench that I have seen. The cheap ones look the same as the Evolv ratchets at Sears.

I went back to check, the regular ratchet is on sale for $17.99, the flex heads are $19.99

If the flexhead is a 60 tooth version, model 81012 for 1/4 drive or 81215 for 3/8 drive, I would consider that a good buy on a good ratchet.
The 36 tooth quick release models remind me of a Titan or Toptul version, and I would pass on those. Check Amazon for a more realistic price comparison than Sears.
