I have one 10mm made by Hazet for some 80's Mercedes starters ala:

Does anyone know of a company that makes this style or something similar? Preferably chrome and 3/8". I've seen a few impact style from Gray Pneumatic, but they're FAR too bulky. Hazet has a few different lengths, but they're really only in 6 and 10mm sizing. Kind of a pain sourcing them as well.

Thanks all.

Not sure if they make them in 3/8 drive, and certainly not for smaller sizes, but I have a 1/4" VIM set from 3mm to 10mm

That socket is no smaller, shorter or better than a 10mm hex driver on a 1/2" universal joint.

I think the only two i have are Snap-on 1/4" 5mm and 6mm, both stubby and standard.

Would you by chance have a part number for the set? I can live with a 1/4" set

I always used the ball end sockets for that.

The problem I have with the ball ends is the position they'd be in would be more likely to strip the fastener. That's not to mention if they shear I'd be royally pissed lol. Some water pump / intakes on Mercedes have special tools like the above Hazet, but rather than getting just those, it'd be nice to have a more complete set for other cars.

The Hazet unit there is for starters and more of a reference picture. There are some locations on Merc engines that wouldn't allow that 1/2" universal to fit, nor achieve a good angle. Not reinventing a wheel here, it's more along the lines of efficiency and ease of use in tight quarters/odd angles.

Thanks for the help thus far guys!

Gearwrench 81088 is a metric set that mixes 1/4 and 3/8. I haven't used them so I can't comment on anything, just giving you another option to look at.

I have only ever seen Mac make a set in 3/8 and vim makes some in 1/4 but you really have to be careful with hex, torx and xzn fastners in a universal since you really want to be straight on the fastners

Ball ends are great for low-torque applications, but definitely not for initial loosening or final tightening, in my experience. I've never sheared one but those little bastards have stripped a few bolt heads, including the really awkward 4mm for my van's crank position sensor.

I was going to buy one of those Hazets ones a while ago to add to my collection of odd sockets.

Even the 4 i have i've only ever found very limited use for, in years of working on (mostly) German cars. But when you need them, you need them. The universal torx bits are good, but tend to slip off.

Don't have the part number handy, but I got them from tool topia, along with universal xzn and torx. There small size makes them incredibly handy.

Excellent! Forgot about the GWrench... A bud is a gearwrench independent, so maybe he's got some hanging out somewhere I could look at. Seems like the VIM set is my best bet so far though.

That's what I'm needing these for, some areas are SO goofy to get to that there's no real way to seat the tool properly unless it's on a universal. Putting a hex socket onto a universal renders the tool too long in most cases so I'm needing a packaged tool to get on the fastener properly.

Along with the 10mm starter tool, I have a 10" long extended 6mm version for doing water pumps on some L6's. I'll tell ya what, any chance someone has the opportunity to open the "Mercedes" drawers in the toolbox, I get a "wtf is this for" when it comes to that tool. It'd be amazing if Hazet made a set from 4-10mm.

I was looking at the 1/2" drive Sunex last night. There's no way I'd be able to fit those where I need. BUT, you gave me a damn good set to consider if I get fed up doing driveshaft guibos by hand! Those would be perrrrrrrfect for that application.

Looks like I'll be springing for the VIM versions. Kind of wishing the 8mm and 10mm were in 3/8 drive, but I've got Hazet for those, so it doesn't really matter. Cheers bud!

All, thanks for the input! Mission accomplished - will be springing for the VIM!
