Guy claims he spent over 3 grand on this stuff...oh, and it's just the two Craftsman boxes and the Matco cart. NO TOOLS!

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/tls/1305240530.html

I have a Crafstman 9-drawer tool box and a 6 drawer middle box to go on top of it. I also have a 2 drawer matco tool cart. Ive had them for a few years, so minor wear and tear. But i bought all this for well over 3 grand, so 600 is a good deal!

I love when they tell you "its a good deal". Translation-its a good deal for ME!!!!! (the seller)

There was a song in the eighties, don't remember the band but the refrain was "white punks on dope"

Try this one ion Atlanta for size. They do have some good deals there but others, like this guy are WAY off base...

Northern Tools For Sale

Forgetting the unreasonably high price (and being nice to even call it that), what I really do not like about posts like that is the lack of pictures or any sort of useful description. What sizes, models, etc are you selling? You have to at least lure someone into calling. Nothing in his ad would make me think about even calling the guy up.

It's not just Craigslist. Yesterday I had a customer try & tell me that he paid $7200 for a Cornwell box. It's a small 2 bay. I called one of our distributors that used to be with Cornwell & he said more like $3200. The tech insisted in 5k trade or no deal. No new box for him!

Dave,

I don't blame you for passing on that. People are nuts!

But please explain this to me...I see tool dealers offering crazy high trade-in values to get folks to trade up. For example, I have a shop owner friend who has a super nice S-O tripple bay. In Cranburry. No question this is a marketable box. Our S-O dealer offered him $10k to trade up to a $15k quad-bank. I know there's a big profit margin....but I still don't get it.

If you trade in your car, you will generally get quite a bit less than if you sell privately. The dealer won't give more than wholesale generally, and will probably make good money reselling the trade-in. But in the example above, $10k is WAY more than my friend could sell that box for, my guess is closer to about $5k-&6k.

A truck tool dealers so motivated to sell boxes that they will trim their margins to very little? Is it that they figure if they move a guy from a tripple bank to a quad bank, (even if they make very little doing so,) they get a happy customer who now has an empty tool chest bank to fill?

I don't know what Snappy's margin is on a box so I can only guess that he already had a buyer for the used one. I will never give more for a box than I feel I can sell it for.

my SO dealer gives quite a bit more on trade in, I guess because he knows he is selling a new box AND the traded in box.

Hell, he offered my old KRL1023 with the warped top for $4500 with the cheap harbor freight box as a trade in. killer deal imo for a cosmetically perfect box, only issue was if you put the stainless top on it.

My old SO dealer gave me 1K for a craftsman box that I originally paid $400 for. He loaded it on the truck and sold it at his next stop for $800. So he was down 200 from that but he sold me a KRL1022 at a slight discount so he still made out.

Happens at the bottom end of the market, too.

$50 for a $40 set of wrenches. And we do have an HF store in town.

Sheesh.
