Howdy,

I am in search of the late 80 version of the craftsman tapered handle screwdrivers.

they are the hard plastic ones, no foam or squeeze and turn.
just the good old fashion clear and blue and red clear and blue handle but tapered.

i poster quite a while ago but never followed up for any response.

I will check back often to see what you all have to say. thank you

Like these. I have the whole set but they are out in my truck box and I didn't want to go dig for them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the Husky sets (US-Made) tapered as well, and made by Western Forge?

Ah yes, the current USA Husky drivers - very similar looking. I'm not sure if WF is responsible for these or not. I'll have to take a look the next time I'm in a Home Depot!

Only have one as well. My dads. I'm assuming there was a whole set at one time. I'm guessing the rest were lost or warrantied for the newer style. I like that older style handle better though. Feels a lot better. Wish I had more of them around.

Offroad, I like this thread as I've actually never seen that style old Craftsman. This surprises me! I have lots of old Craftsman. The modern Pratt Reed from Menards are real close to this style handle. It would be interesting to know the code on your screwdrivers - they are likely Pratt Reed vs Western Forge, both now owned by Ideal as is SK but were not back then. Also some US made at Home Depot and at Lowes under Kobalt are also made by Ideal, whether WF or PR. Most of both of those are China COO, but they have a few US made now. ALL the Menards screwdrivers under MasterForce brand are made by Pratt Reed and US COO. - Paul

Those tapered handled craftsman were only sold for a couple of years in the early 1990's. I don't think they sold that well before being dropped in favor of the all black craftsman professional model.
The husky/master force are similar but, their handles are are a lot narrower than the craftsman version which might be a good thing :dunno:
The husky versions also use square blades on the Phillips screwdrivers. The good news is that the huskys are fairly cheap and widely available at Home Depot so, you could pick up a couple to try out.

howdy guys,
thanks for all the info on the screwdrivers. I know there are many that are similar. That being said, THESE are the only ones that i really like. I don't understand why sears has / had to mess with a good thing. in my opinion, there hasn't been a more comfortable screwdriver since.

Also, i amazes me to the extent of detail that you guys go to over the smallest things. I have learned a lot just from reading your posts on various issues i have had in the past.

thanks again. if anyone (not likely, but it never hurts to ask) has ANY of these screwdrivers they would consider parting with i would be interested.

A bit off topic here..... I have several of these Husky screwdrivers and they work fine but those square shanks on the philips ones are just unnerving to me. Something about their look just seems off. :dunno:

I wonder if the Craftsman tapered handle have any relation to the Stanley Workmasters?

Those are my absolute favorites. I got a set for Christmas when I was a kid; sadly, they were in a toolbox that got stolen. I've been looking for replacements for years, I've found a few but they're pretty scarce.
