Great re-use of the coffee cans. I remember only buying coffee in the 1lb size for months just to get the small cans. :p

Nice dove tail work on the tote Mark. Like the drawers for nails?? The one I pick up most often is a metal one much like yours without the drawers. Has no class, but easy to pack and go... You've given me inspiration to make a wooden model.

I agree re nice handy work on the dovetails. Nothing like having something like that that you appreciate for its utility and for your skill in getting it made.. :rocker:

Mark: I'll have to agree with the rest of the guys that your little carry wood tool box was built well and a good design for taking to a spot to do a quick job around the house.

Dave: love all the dremel bit storage. i've seen some of your restoration work and guessing you use your dremel quite a bit?

i've also seen a few of those old dental cabinets with the white glass trays in several of the drawers. i'd probably buy one if they weren't 10 times as much as the old military steel stuff i tend to find and buy.

KEN: very impressive. did you make the big cabinet for your big planes?

Thanks! Yes, I made the hanging tool cabinet. My plan was to get everything off the floor, on wheels, and have it all neat & tidy...well, needless to say...THAT didn't happen...I just drug more **** home...

Ken: did you quit dragging stuff home or get a couple storage units like i have? i used to have them organized, but it's not a winning battle lately. i'm asking because your shop looks like you could start a project in a few minutes and maybe get it done by the end of the day and i'd spend half a day looking for the tools?

again thanks for sharing all your pictures and needlessly to say i'm jealous.

Yep...10' x 10' storage unit...almost full. Probably (maybe) $1500 worth of **** in unit - been paying $104/month for almost 2 years with no end in sight...how galactically stupid is that???

Ken: if you are not going to the storage unit and picking up and dropping of things like I am I would say you need to start selling stuff you will never use. if it's been 2 years and you haven't used it you might need to think if you ever will. no you are not much different than me or a lot of members here.

some of the stuff we keep you can't replace so if you let it go you will probably never get a chance to buy or come across another one for a decent price.

again nice looking cabinets and toolboxes. are all your wood tool boxes Gertsners or do tell?

cheers

Being frugal I built 3 or 4 of these some years back and they have served me well. A plywood carcass with a square frame rabbited in for drawer support. The drawers are 1x4 or 1x6 dovetailed at the corners with a Masonite bottom. cheap and functional.

Tarnished, Nine4: Not sure what drill box was originally. I found it in an antique store and thought it would make a cool storage for cutting tools. I made the slip-in trays to accommodate the drills, reamers, etc.

DrivesIt: That would be the sensible thing to do, but I store several things that I can't or don't want to get rid of. 200 lbs of brass blanks for parts, old Delta wood lathe and disk sander to be restored. Half a dozen electric motors in case I need one of the machines yet to be restored, etc, etc, etc....

Larry: it looks like the wood cabinets you made are maybe holding several hundred or a thousand pounds of parts and tools so you have my vote as a great design that works.

Ken: if you are using a storage unit for supplies $100 or even $200 a month isn't a high price to pay for having some room in your shop or garage. we all can't afford the property or the cost to build a 40 x 120 garage so we all do what we can.

BTW I can only hope some day to have a shop that looks like it's a place to work like yours or just sit and grab a bear and look at your old tools.

Larry i would like to know more adout your drawers. Did you make the sides longer than the bottom so they could be opened wide so they wouldnt fallout or what did you do?

They are simple boxes that will slide right out of the cabinet. Other than the handle the front and rear look the same. Nothing to make it like a full extension drawer.

How hard is it to open the drawers? If they are loaded heavily, is it difficult to get them to slide? How thick is the masonite? Nice design. Wish I had several and a space to put them...

ALL: in case Royce doesn't have time to post up his wood cabinet he's making for his lista metal drawers I thought i'd provide a link.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=323176

it is becoming one of my favorite cabinets and he's thinking of putting some BLO or linseed oil finish on it too.

hopefully Royce will post up a few pictures of it here when he finishes it and thought some of you that don't frequent the fabrication section often might want to see it.

anybody else have a wood cabinet or tool box to share pictures of please do.

Not a gerstner, but kinda neat set up. Representative of a homeowner working with what he had on hand. Lower 2 drawer cabinet has been painted over, but you can see where it used to say Manicure Scissors - Cuticle whatever- ect.
The 2 drawers have built in dividers and actually work fairly well.

Yes, nice job Hankoh.. When I was a kid my father had all his nails, screws, bolts, etc. in metal coffee cans.. Its a fond memory, and how I started right after getting married...
My folks sometimes still use those 1/2-gal or 1-gal soy sauce cans you can still find in the store.

Sorry to have missed your question a month ago. I have used wax on the top and bottom of the side pieces and they slide quite well. The Masonite is 1/4".

As far as space in the old shop I had one hanging on the wall and another set on a shelf.

Giz: WELL DONE!! so made it out of just a few things you had sitting around? care to share what you store in your wood cabinet? also nice that it's on wheels and just curious why?

It started its life as a drafting table project I started but never finished, which is why the four corner legs are a bit overbuilt. I was teaching at a NW University at the time and kept this cabinet with my Gerstner sitting on top in my office. I could roll it into classrooms and labs which I found saved me a bunch of time when compared to doing demos using the University stuff that was always locked away in tool rooms and locked cabinets.

I started posting photos of contents, but it already exists:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4053792&postcount=20

I did have to buy the drawer slides and the casters but everything else I had acquired and was just storing in my apartment.

I didn't know if this should go in wood cabinets or metal cabinets as it is a little of both.

I originally built this for my now ex-wife but that is another story in itself.
I built the frame from steel tube, the drawers from aluminum sheet, and used excess bamboo flooring for the outsides of the cabinet, . I built it in to the base of my work table and it holds a multitude of things from carbide inserts for my machine tools to heavy dies for my tubing bender and it has held up well.

I used off the shelf drawer slides from Home Depot and whatever materials I had laying around the shop to build it and I'm quite happy with it. It was a quick 2-day project and I might build another one if I ever get the free time.

That's nice Drives, I just got a free wooden flat file from CL recently that I want to either put a glass top on or a padded upholstered top, along with short legs to raise it off the rug. It is missing two drawers so I will need to fabricate more but the price was right.

I picked up this old carpenters wood tool chest this weekend for $20. Has two trays and handsaw holders in the lid. I will do a basic cleaning and sell it to some interior decorator LOL.

Put glass on the top! You can have a different collection in each drawer and change then every month!

I wanted to do glass when i saw it, my girl could not grasp the idea until she saw the one above and liked it. We'll probably go with glass now. Im tempted to felt the drawers like a machinist box as well. The main thing i cant decide is whether i should strip the awesome od green paint from it and stain or repaint it OR, try matching the paint for the drawers i fab for it. The drawer faces have been painted over already so i would have to carefully remove whats on them so they match the case. I like the look of the stained bare wood too though.

Mack: that cabinet you made from scratch looks awesome. any chance you can post up the dimensions and show us some more pictures of the slides and the insides of the drawers. happy to see you got the cabinet in the divorce because I think it's COOL.

BB: I bet those old wood tool boxes will be repurposed some day if not already as coffee tables but they seem to be pretty reasonable now and looks like you might have also got a few gems inside.

NINES: your blueprint wood cabinet has the REALLY COOL handles that might be hard to match, but I like all your ideas and hope you get time to spiff it up. you sure filled up your metal blueprint cabinets fast so i'm guessing you have plenty of stuff to put in this one. good luck

I wish these were mine! Spotted at an antique show today. Let the drooling begin!

Octagonal hardware bin, chest of drawers and my absolute favorite, an old science lab desk with TWO swing out stools. That was a little over my budget at $2200!

bluebolt

The workbench in your picture caught my eye. It was made by EH Sheldon and looks to be pre WWII. I went to an estate sale a few weeks ago and bought one also made by EH Sheldon. Truth be known I bought it for the vise, which turned out to be two vises when I got there, one on each side, and was going to scrap the bench other than the hard maple top. Then I got a good look at the construction and researched it a little bit and realized the $75 was a good investment, especially if I restore the bench. $2200 sounds crazy high but the bench you saw would be expensive to manufacture today and the patina doesn't come in a can. Thanks for posting that.

Eric

This is a cabinet that I built out of reclaimed 100 year old pine. The carcass is put together with dovetails, as are all of the drawers. All grooves and dadoes were cut with hand planes as well. It was a lot of fun building it entirely with hand tools...

Hi Gang, I thought I'd share with you my recent shop supplies organization. I am fortunate enough to have a cabinet that my grandfather used in his shop. Too many years have passed and I can't remember what he had in it for his purposes. I would guess that he made it, but it is also likely that he trash picked it or someone gave it to him. In spite of its years, it's still in very good shape- tight joints all the way around and pretty good fit. It would look nice with a fancier base on it, but a scrap of plywood will do for now.

At any rate, now I've got all my glue, specialty cleaners, polishing solutions, etc. in one place. I really like getting my shop organized- pretty soon I'll be doing new projects rather than just setting up. I bought my place coming up on two years ago and sometimes it still feels like I've just landed there, hehe.

NTZ: WELL DONE in making both those cabinets. looks like you have quite an OLD SCHOOL woodworking collection and i'm guessing more than adequate skills to use them. do tell what your training is if you don't mind or do you just work on wood as a hobby that you are quite good at?

Jolo: Sadly I can't tell you how many old kitchen and garage cabinets I've seen like that thrown in the burn pile or trash. glad to see you saved one especially since it was your gramp's. thanks for sharing and reminding me (us) not to throw any more of those old cabinets away.

Wow! Brian, that cabinet is a beautiful piece of work. The dovetails and fit look super tight. I am beginning to appreciate the amount of work that goes into something like that. You have to have adequate work space, access to suitable materials, the right tools, the method for resharpening the tools in handy reach. The whole deal is more than meets the eye and, in the end, only what meets the eye. My compliments!

Thank you for the compliment, Drivesitfar. I like to preserve what I can. There are so many worthwhile projects a hobbyist/ craftsman comes across and not near enough time for all of them. Seeing a piece of furniture or a tool rotting in a flower bed strikes me as sad. It survived maybe a hundred years until someone decided it would be cute to watch it rot. By comparison, that is what makes this thread so great!

I don't have any formal training, but have read lots of books on old school techniques and have a passion for it. Time at it helps, as well. It's been nearly 30 years so far, with lots left to learn...
