Picked up this Wilton 450 for $70. Has a little play in the slide but I should be able to easily tighten it up. And there is a gouge on top of one of the jaws. I'll just flip the jaws if I can.

S4 :+1: on the refurb of the Prentiss! Nice find!

I can't recall seeing a Bulldog Patternmakers Vise. Have to look at my limited catalog pages for that...

Thanks for the reply. I will post some pictures of it this evening. Do you mind me asking how much you sold the vise for? I'm just curious to see if I over paid for mine or not.

I actually sold it to a local farm for $300. Probably could've gotten more if the jaws hadn't been so worn.

Please post the date code if it has one when you get the chance. Looks like the same era as my 350. Mine has no date code. TIA

Here are a few pictures of my previously mentioned Parker 5x vise. Could anyone tell me which of the 2 bolts in the picture is the correct one? It came with the square head and flat head bolt and would like to get one more of the correct one. Also should their be a bolt or something that would go toward the handle? I notice it is threaded. Thanks in advance!

The Left flat head philister head bolt is correct.

There be a flat head set screw, a spring, and a small piece of steel or ball bearing to hold the handle in place.

How wide are the jaws and what's the weight of that vise? Is that the 6-1/4" jaw 150lb guy?

Ok thanks for the bolt information. As far as the set screw, spring and ball bearing I will just have to match something up I suppose. The ball bearing would be the first against the handle or the spring? Yep that is 6-1/4" jaws and 150 pounder.

Be careful, those threads sometimes are not standard threads. I have seen 9/32:18 for the spindle set screw from the top of my head. Cool vise.

S4cruiser, should be proud of that Prentiss restore, very nice.

1894 catalog list a No. 5 @ 120 lbs and 6-1/8" jaws.

(and only 24 bucks! I'l take ten sir! (on the other hand, I'd rather take 10 No. 6's at 237 lbs w/8-1/8 jaw... 50 makers... )

I got it on my CL alerts. It is a Woden 3C "handy vice" 92 lbs. with the base. I found it in one the1950's catalogs Cwazy Wabbit posted. I will pick it up tommorrow morning.
I'm happy a GJ member got it. I wanted it but couldn't justify another vise(I know... blasphemy!) Heck of a deal!

Mounting question: it looks like the Reed I picked up is intended to be mounted with 5/8" bolts, or maybe 11/16" and there's some paint in there... 5/8" is a little loose.

What size hardware do you guys use to mount stuff? That's bigger than the lug studs on my 3/4 ton truck (although the truck does have 8 vs 4), seems excessive to me. Not even sure I can easily buy decent stuff locally.

The size just seems seriously excessive to me. 16mm is only a hair over 5/8" and I'm sure 4 5/8" bolts is overkill. I beat on the previous China vise reasonably hard and it was mounted with 3 5/16" bolts, no problems. I do need to build a shelf on the table so I can put a couple brake drums from the truck down low to make it more stable.

Slotard - One of the large vises I bought had bushings in the holes so that it could be mounted with smaller bolts. Just about any size bolt will hold it down (within reason) the idea is to keep the vise from moving about on the bench if the bolts loosen up.

The inflation calculator I first found says that $50 is equal to almost $1400 today... I wonder what a similar vise would cost now.

Slot: where are you located? I've got some extra bolts. or read about a month ago in the Vise Repair 101 thread where Fretters made copper sleeves to mount his vices with a little smaller diameter bolts. I think the main reason he did that was to keep from cracking the cast if he tightened the bolts too hard and for the LOOK.

I use as big of a bolt as I can fit in the hold snugly. overkill you say. maybe but I have plenty of big bolts.

MM: nice big Parker find. also welcome to the forum and to the vise thread.

S4: nice work on the paddle jaw Prentiss. I own that same #59 Prentiss and I think mine has different jaws. I also have a #26 that is a swivel jaw coachmaker's vise. did you say how you did the lettering?

Here it is facing the same way as the printing block. The image came from a 1946 Ellefeldt Machinery and Supply catalog from Kansas City, MO

Scored this sweet Record SQ4 to go with my SQ3. I am a huge fan since they are quick release and both of mine have swivel bases. The SQ4 has light use marks, a tiny hacksaw ding in the jaws but other than that it's in perfect shape! No abuse marks whatsoever. I will clean it up tomorrow.

I can turn a few spacers for a snug fit no problem. I have a mini lathe which is adequate for that... it's a pile, but I inherited it so it was worth the price. I hadn't thought of doing that, I guess I need to decide if I want the spacer to have a flange above the vise or not.

The stand I have for it was originally for a saw or something and is a cast top (not all that thick, maybe 1/4 in the thinner parts but a fair number of ribs), supported by 4 2"x3/16" angles with some braces, with some heavy scrap attached near the bottom for stability... given the limitations of the stand I'd be amazed if some 1/2" bolts with decent size backing plates where I can fit them would cause any problems.

Thanks for the offer on the bolts but by the time shipping is factored in it doesn't make much sense, I can get everything I need for <$10. Not like I need high strength bolts.

Send that recipe to Outlaw for posting the Sears catalog and me for finding it. It looks like a Dunlap but made by who ??
Get: Nice detective work! I think you nailed it!

Getridaone and Outlawmws - I was ******* all weekend and didn't have a chance to get back on here, but I wanted to say THANKS for finding that little ****** for me. There is no doubt in my mind that you nailed it with the Dunlap, the drawing matches all the details of it so well. It also came from an estate where much (if not all) of the tools and machines were Cman/Sears stuff. Any idea when that catalog was from so I could get an approximate date? Just my curiosity. Can you point me to the original posting of that catalog too?

Also, is there any way to figure out the original maker? I would assume it has subtle differences to set it apart so we won't find an exact replica with another brand on it, but it does share characteristics of other brands. I dug and dug on the net and all I found was certain characteristics echoed in other brands, but no way for my untrained eye to see more than an unmatched piece here or there.

Thanks!

Here is a before picture and after pictures of a Parker 63 1/2 that I just finished. This was a fun restoration because of the art deco style of this vise.

* Sixth picture: With the embellishments, I used a technique that's new to me in finishing it. The ribs & lettering was polished before painting it. As I applied the paint to the body, I used a folded paper towel to wipe the paint off so the remaining paint would be between the ribs & letters.

* Third picture: The blemishes have been preserved. I'm sure that there's a story there.

* Fifth picture: The lead screw was originally held in place by a spot welded washer, from the factory. I cut this away, cut a groove in the spindle and applied an e-clip.

This is an ornamental vise that has been entered in the "Another's Treasure" art show at the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana Gallery, Evansville In. It will be on display after 4/4/16. This art show features art created from man made items.

My latest project. Gifted to me after by a friend from the estate of his brother that passed away. It needs a little TLC, but I think it will make an excellent vise when it's done. I only found one reference on the internet for the #194 on this forum and the owner was looking for a new nut. This one needs a new nut too.

It has 3/4-4 threads. I ordered a new bushing for the screw and a nut from Vice Parts with the correct threads. I plan on welding the old and new together to fix it.
