The barn has concrete floor throughout. One 15 x 15 area is enclosed/insulated/heated etc. to be used as an exercise room by both myself and the wife. Lots of jump rope, yoga, martial arts type of stuff.. pushups, situps.. In other words, not a lot of stationary equipment, more body weight exercise types of stuff that has you out on the floor moving around.

So, something to absorb impact would be important.

Also, something that will not easily slide around (I have interlocking foam mats now... way too light, they slide and nearly topple me.. so I'm not using them anymore)

Can't get tripped up on seams between pieces

Since sweating will occur, easily cleaned

What have you done? Or, what have you seen done? (links if possible please)

Thanks guys!

Check-out your local health club to see what they used in their weight room. I'm certain they can give you proper guidance.

We have the interlocking foam mats in our exercise room and they work great. It's cut to exactly the size of the room though and there's some stationary equipment on the edges to keep it from moving though.

There's actual rubber mats you can get online, but they're not real cheap.

If you want to go on the less expensive route..... Horse Stall Mats. 3/4 inch rubber. They do not interlock, but are heavy and stay in place. I put them in my garage gym, wall to wall. I am very pleased with them...No problem dropping 135 lbs of bumpers from overhead. Check out southern states or tractor supply. They do tend to expand and contract more than I would like, but I have not tripped on them yet. My garage ranges from 85 - 35 and I get a 1/4 gap on some of the mats between summer and winter.

I thought about those from TSC for my weight room, but was concerned they would off gas. Do you notice any problem / smell from them?

Menard's has some nice workout room / playroom mats, but they're $3-$4 sq. ft.

It has been a year since I got them so if I remember correctly, they smelled like horse sh..... just kidding.
I remember them being pretty smelly in my Bronco when I brought them home. They are not low VOCs by any means. I don't recall the smell being overly strong once I had them installed but I did take a month or so to install so they may have aired out by then. They do not smell now and I do pushups/burpees so my nose does get down there. Not that I am in the habit of sniffing them.

Some other things I remembered about them...They are pretty heavy and being 4x6 not easy to move around. But hey, just consider the install a workout as I did. Also, mine had a thousand small rubber balls that ended up in the truck, so hauling them in a pickup is the route to go if possible. To cut them, get a lot of sharp utility blades, a straight edge. Make the first cut flat on the ground with the straight edge, then put a milk crate under the cut to open it up and cut the rest of the way through as they are 3/4 inch.

For Cost, I believe when I priced them out, I was looking at $600 for stall mats vs $1200 for the other type of mats and they were 1/2 inch or thinner.

Cleaning them: I just vacuum mostly. I have tried to mop them once, but they are kind of grippy (good) and not the easiest thing to mop.

I think that will really work for me, I'm going to check it out this weekend, thanks! I also do a ton of pushups and burpees, so that particular detail was useful. Thanks!

btw, what really is the harm of off gassing in a small application like this? (I also hear of OSB off gassing) Is it one of those things that would take constant exposure for 20 years to cause any real harm?
