Fit check! The 12 foot and the 8 foot garage doors went in today, Yaaayy

the color is not what I had hoped, but I think I will paint the inside and outside of the doors white. The vendor said the inside was always white and that I could always paint the outside the same color as the body of the building. I don't know if I am going to ***** about it or not....

$1500 bucks is worth every penny to reduce the dust that I would have if I didn't paint the floor with something. I know, epoxy is not paint...I am using the term as a verb.

Do mean "dust" from the concrete? Or to make it easier to clean up dust from working? My slab is bare-naked and makes no "dust"....just wondering.

I believe that microscopically concrete degenerates from the point is sets to the point is is recycled and made into roadbase. And unless it is sealed the concrete sheds particles and makes dust. You roll something with steel wheels etc. I say this because I work in the Aerospace Industry and we deal with the micro-fine particles from many sources.

Light check! Except for the experienced professional, the novice designer builder really doesn't know how a lighting plan will come together until you fire up the lights. All the planning and spacing of the wire behind the walls is an educated guess and then the big moment comes. "Warp Speed Mr. Sulu" and "Captain, I'm given her all she's got"

Third picture is looking into the restroom from the outside.

I have 9 of the Craftsman two tube fixtures on order. They are going to be used for the perimeter lights over the benches. I got them in blue which is my accent color (White/Gray/Blue) in honor of the US Air Force. I need to find or make a set of USAF Wings to hang on the wall.

Thanks Litljay! Sometimes I think that's what I only do in my off time.

I put in two Liftmaster 3800 Garage Door Openers in this weekend. One is done and the other is about 90%. I spent extra time putting the low voltage wiring in surface mount raceways.

Wow, nice garage. Those slanted ceiling lights are going to give off great light for working and all the cabinets...very nice. Well thought out, and executed.

P-Dude,

Your place is lookin great! That lil P-car looks so lonely in there. It may not fit with your color scheme but IMHO the old UASF logo is far more attractive. Or perhaps a 9Th AF logo in honor of your base namesake.

Hey valdeztke, welcome to GJ. More picture as continue the build.

I am not in the USAF, I'm a civialian contractor for 26 years.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I spent my years in the Pentagon and now I'm up on Capitol Hill.

I'm still a ways away from a garage, just had the offer on the house accepted the other day. Not sure if I want to do a loft or not. Don't really need the extra space. Oh well, I'll figure it out. Looking forward to your photos to come:bowdown:

Hey Porschedude, the garage looks awesome, great job and very inspiring, thanks a lot for taking the time to post all your progress.

We share the same issues; the wife as your only helper, and creating more work with too many ideas of your own!

And on that LV wiring on the LM3800, is that MIL-spec spiral wrap? 14M912? :bounce:

Thanks tytoyz, I didn't like the idea of plain old bell wire stapled to the framing...I have had that spiral wrap for 30 years and never used it. It was one of the many things that I have been collecting for years to fulfill this dream of mine. I think it was liberated when the aircraft plant that I worked at closed some 28 years ago.

Hey P-dude!

Freakin' great build. That you did much of the work single handedly is just amazing. So many of the people on this forum just floor me with their abilities. I was proud of myself for putting together little Lowe's particle board cabinets and attaching peg-board to the walls. You created a BUILDING!

Class act garage, especially like the ceiling with the skylights, cudos again.

no... thats generally not a good idea unless you have to.
i had to do that for insurance purposes.. the mrs wasnt real impressed at how much i have in tools alone.. i was though :) i tried to press the fact that thats why i need to have a good, sealed garage.. to protect all my tools.

I got the Compressed Air System finished in the inside of the shop today. Outside work consists of a raised concrete platform and a small shed to keep the rain off compressor.

I bought 6 butcher block tops (25-5/8" x 96-7/8" x 1-1/2") from Ikea. Now that is an amazing store. The tops are made very well and are oiled.

Need to connect the sewer and make my final run to the main circuit panel.

I still have not picked out the outside ornamental lighting.

Seeing the reflection of the lamps in your cabinet doors I wonder; in retrospect would you have moved the the light fixtures out a bit more?

The doors to the attic just call out for a neat sign or art work.

Hey Steve, the theory with the placement is to have the lighting in front of the person rather than from the back of the person. The height was placed to allow the cabinet doors to swing open and the uppers cabinet have bi-pass doors. If i need more task lighting I plan to use some under cabinet lights. Maybe a continuous rope light. I think the current configuration works for me.

Wow, it must be really bright in your garage with all the lights on.

Thanks yellow, I've been working in the daytime during the whole build without any lighting because of the skylights. You're right, it is going to be very bright when all the lighting is on...

Super! Long and involved project, way to go. And thanks for sharing with us!

Thanks jcirafic, It has been fun documenting and sharing with the group. I now know that there are so many decisions that need to be made up front. Lighting was is one of the hard ones.

Nice job.
Two details I like are the sky lights and the shallow shelves.

She's alive! Well the shop is powered on its own. Meaning that I ran the conduit this past weekend and pulled the conductors and terminated them to the main and the sub-panel. I flipped the breakers and everything works...Yahhhhh

Thanks Springer454, looks like you have some heavy work on your hands. Built Like A Brick "Stuff" House comes to mind when I saw your picture. Was this a all new build or are you building on an existing slab?

I got the wall lights on, finished installing the bi-fold doors and did a little trim painting. Also a major cleanup of surrounding backyard. It was to get ready for my sister-n-law's 50th Birthday Party which will be held in the shop this weekend. I wanted to hold off using the shop for this but the wife really wanted to throw a party for her sister...I pray that no one spills red wine on my naked bench tops. Wife told me she is buying water-proof table cloths to cover them.

Rub some light oil veg or mineral on the tops and edges. The oil will not darken the tops and will seal them from aqueous liquids. Or use some spray wax. Place looks very nice, hangar party time!!

I've heard you don't want to use veg oil because it will go bad over time. I heard that mineral oil is one of the easiest to locate and one of the more preferred then tung oil is even better. Mineral gives a dull finish but tung will give it a satin and seals better. Mineral oil isn't a sealant and it will wick back out of the wood if you don't keep coating. It's more used for re-coating already sealed blocks, not fresh wood.

Thanks, SoCal and Yellow, I have some cutting boards that I keep oiled about twice a year in the house with mineral oil. These tops are from IKEA the household furniture store on the west coast. The directions say that they have been oiled and to re-oil these heavy and then wipe them off after 30 minutes and repeat every week and then every month for several months and then twice a year forever. I may be locked into using the mineral oil because of what has already been done.

The punch list is getting smaller.

Paint Cabinets
Paint Closet Doors
Paint Exterior Trim
Paint Floor
Finish Heater Installation
Paint Floor
Tile Restroom Floor
Install Base molding
Trim back Garage Door Tracks

Wow, P-dude. Awesome build. Very inspiring, indeed! You are one fortunate man to have a wife that's on board with your project, (mine was and is for most of mine as well), and to have the resources to create a truly great workspace!

Congratulations! You're almost done!!!

Well, having followed this build since it began, I have to say, it is truly a fantastic accomplishment and my hat is off to you. So much so, that when I started hunting for a new house early this year, I was inspired and focused my search on only property that would allow me to do something similar. The good news is, I'm closing on my new house Wednesday! I have room for a 28'x46' garage "extension" to the existing 30'x20' 3-car garage. With the similarity of your space to mine, I would love to see your plans and see if I can't learn something from your experience.

Cheers,
LWW

Wah-Whoooo, I got passed my Final Inspection today. He was ready to sign as soon as he got there. I guess this project has been a topic of converstion at the inspection department. The inspector is a good guy and I have made an effort to keep him a friend and be honest with him. He asked and took some pictures to show off the build to his big boss. I hope he is around on my next build. He made it very easy when you play ball with him. I found that all I needed to do was do it right and be honest.

I still have a bunch of trim paint, installation of the audio/video system, floor paint, scissor lift install, etc.

Congratulations your build it is super nice. Not over the top, super functional, you did it yourself and the details I learned from as you went was enjoyable. I never considered the narrow cabinets until I saw how well you executed them. It passed my final approval a long time ago. Enjoy the fruits of your labor.
