My guess would be either a no. 435 or 436. I have 2 of the 436's. Pretty hefty just under 190 lbs. I also have this 434 1/2 mounted which I absolutely love.

Rossco, the Record should move quick,---5'' jaws and welded steel plate vise for $40.00.---I'd say that was a buy.
Shift, could be #435 or #436.---Hard to tell the size.

That Record looks like a Record Leader vice but I've not seen one with the curved slide. Interesting.
I have a slightly larger version and they are lovely vices

I went after a block grinder and came home with 2 grinders, 2 stands and this Desmond Stephans Simplex No.43S. I just happened to have brought enough cash. It’s almost like I anticipated something like this might happen.

Last week I went to an auction preview at a machine shop in Mt. Carmel, Ill. I posted about a couple of vises that I saw. One was a 5" Reed, with a pivot jaw and a swivel base. Overall condition: it looked rode hard & put away wet, as most of the vises that we find. It was missing a swivel base handle (on the back side), and it had a bolt in place of the original pivot jaw lock pin. This really concerns me about that is the possible cracks in the inside of the pivot jaw due to the extra stress.
Based on the picture I was going to bid on it, until I saw it in person.
The winning bid for that vise was $410.00!

It's an Athol alright but it looks like the ******* child of an Athol and a Vanderman - both of which I want. I can't say for sure about the Athol but the Vanderman was called a Steamfitter's Vise. Congrats, that was a lucky find.

It reminded me of one you picked up lately too. I think the color and finish of your Cman is fine. You're right though, the contrast lettering really sets it off.

Agreed it shows as a 486, but the catalog page (not the best, granted) I have says 436? If so its a 6" and I think 185 lbs?
Is this an early Athol?
From the casting markings I would say yes, but I've never seen one like that from Athol

I painted a 3" 40's Wilton bullet hammertone black a while back... Someone Implied I needed my man card lifted...

+1 on the 436 Outlaw.---Castings can alter the looks of numbers and letters a lot of times, and some times be missing altogether.---But the vise is still same.---It is what it is.

I painted a 3" 40's Wilton bullet hammertone black a while back... Someone Implied I needed my man card lifted...
What!? That dirty skunk...
It's the resemblance to the Chinese craftsman vises that I find distasteful. I actually like the color. And will likely use it again on a different vise. Simplex perhaps....

I couldn't pass up a free vise
I am working in the tropics for a couple of years on contract so I am far away from my garages and shop. I have a couple of Wiltons and an old leg vise in my home shop but I have been looking for something big. I found this free for the taking today. I could not leave it there to continue rusting away. I'm sure it will buff right up

It is really rusty. I will measure the jaws tonight and see if I can read the nameplate. It was all 2 of us could do to lift it. The island I am on (Tutuila) belonged to the Navy from 1900ish to the 1960's so it probably has a navy background.

I can't speak as to the exact age but I'm curious as to how the jaw inserts are attached. Screws or pins. And can you show a picture of this vise from the front and rear?

It's interesting the last couple of pages have shown some love for the Columbian vises. They always seem to take a backseat to Wiltons and Parkers. Hollow jaws and lack of style is usually the biggest complaint, however when it comes to form follows function, they are pretty tough to beat.

Fretters: some Wiltons do HAVE hollow jaws, but i'm not sure they all do. the C series vises probably are not hollow jaws but the areas holding the pipe jaws are pretty big.
83: nice save of the Columbian. the vise itself should spiff up pretty easily. the screw looks like it's at least missing a sleeve to hole the screw to the dynamic or the screw or vise nut might have issues. best of luck and welcome to our forum and the vise thread.

Going to look at a Parker 273 rear swivel jaw on Friday morning. I had placed an ad on Craigslist looking for bench vises and got a response today. Look pretty good from what I can tell. I'm not sure if the pin for the swivel jaw is stuck or not. Anything else besides the normal checking for cracks, mushrooming that I need to pay attention to on it?

I've bought a couple - an ugly Desmond Stephan and a red 4.5" Reed, and bought a Rigid for a friend (I posted it too). Planning on looking at (and likely buying) a couple more this weekend, but they're near where I am on the weekend rather than during the week (Bay Area during the week, Sac often on weekends). Don't have time to look at that 106R tonight, if he still has it tomorrow I will then.

Yep, they are really really hollow, but they don't have to be.

Yep Fretters, 40 lbs. to fill both towers.---The lead absorbs shock that might otherwise damage a good vise from a miss-lick.

Thanks for the welcome....I've been lurking in the shadows for a while. I measured the jaws tonight and its an 8 inch. The model is a 608 or 808 (the first number is doublestruck and hard to read). The cast parts are nice but the steel parts are pretty corroded,nothing a little maching cant fix. If nothing else it will be the worlds coolest doorstop in my shop when I take it back home to South Dakota.

Yeah it's probably a 436. Paint, dirt, and old grease always distort the casting numbers too. And I have a smaller version 433-1/2.
