Deck flooring?

I know this isn't necessarily a "garage" floor, but I didn't know where else to post it. I was wondering how many 1"x6"x8' boards I would need to buy to fill up 396 square feet of area. It's in the shape of an L, the fatter part being 20 long by 15 wide, the shorter smaller area being 8 long by 12 wide. May be a stupid question and maybe i'm missing something simple, but I figured i'd ask anyways and learn something. My thinking was two boards every foot, so a 20 long would be 40 boards wide?

A 1x6 is actually only 5 1/2 inches wide. So a 1x6x8 has about 3.7 sq ft. 396/3.7=107 boards.

I assume you meant 5/4x6x8?

Price it using cedar, or better yet, ipe. It'll make the $750 look better!

5/4 is much better for flooring than a standard "1by". (Actual thickness is about 1" versus about 3/4".)

Remember the spacing between the boards usually makes up for the dimensions being off. But yes 5/4 or 2x depending on the spacing of the joists.

I figured I'd get a 3/8 strip of wood for spacing, to keep everything even. I wish I could do composite! What is truly recommended for a real wood? Size, type? The more I work with different sizing of wood, the more ice come to notice a 2x4 is not 2x4 lol. As are all the other sizes. So deceiving!
