So, I picked up a 1959 Meddings Pacera pillar drill (i.e. "drill press") at the weekend. It's an LB1/2, which means it's an L1 Bench model, Mk II. I understand that these were manufactured till 1961.

I need some help, and am hoping someone out there might have the answers:

 1. The return spring is missing. I checked with Meddings, they no longer stock it and they don't have any archive information on the spec. Can any meddings owner give me a rough idea of their spring size? (part #48 in the diagram below.) Width and diameter appear to be the important measurements... and the internal diameter of my Spring Box (part #49) is 2.25"

 2. The pulley instruction plate (part #20 in the diagram) is missing. Again, Meddings can't help. Can anyone post a pic of a Meddings pulley diagram?

Here's the exploded diagram for reference:

Many thanks for your help :)

Here's a couple of pics of the beastie as I picked it up... the eagle-eyed among you will see the bungee on the base which has been doing return sprint duty :wtf:

At 110kgs, it took some lifting out of the car! It'll be the subject of a resto thread in due course :D

nice score were'd you find it have had my eye out for a nice drill and no luck yet

Thanks! I just kept an eye on the classifieds - done deal might work for you, given your location...

And if you want old, British made, then be prepared to pay the same money as for a brand new China-made drill. And you'll get half the power at the motor. But: new drills come with a 3-year warranty, and are cost-engineered to a finite, de minimus, consumer spec. Mine has no warranty, save that it's been working these last 57 years without an issue :rocker:

Just saw this (and the pm). My old Meddings has been stripped down and is sitting on a trolley waiting its turn while I twiddle with an old shaper.

I will pop out over the weekend and have a look at some of the bits you're interested in..
