Anyone know anything about Trojan vises? Having trouble finding much about them online.

I realized I could get it out intact, wasn't too bad once I got the angle a little better. Once I pulled it apart I found it had obviously been a mouse home at some point. It needs some serious cleaning as is expected for something that hasn't been used in well over a decade. I wiped it down with some BLO as it was dry, I need to take it to my mom's, pressure wash the gunk out, clean it up a little more, and then see how it feels. It's not bad now, but not great either.

He said he mostly used it as a press for ball joints. The screw looks good, though. Since ball joints don't tend to require all that much force (I've done them with china vises before with no problem) I guess it isn't as abusive as using it for other things.

I was moderately surprised that the jaws are cast in, is that normal?

Can anyone give a reasonable age estimate from that?

That patent was granted August 16, 1938. Since yours has a round nose, it's one of the earliest ones with that patent.
I just don't know the year they changed to the flat nose model like I have.

Here is the outcome of my 4 day swing through MA and RI. Every one of these came from a phone call from a friend. They are: Wilton 1760, 4" Starrett, 4" Erie, 3.5" Wilton bullet, Wilton 1740. The total haul cost $450.

I am beat.

Thanks man! I appreciate it. Hope it works out for you.

Mind if I ask what the S4 in your user name refers to?

Sorry...but it came home with me. It's in amazing shape minus the swivel pin being jacked up. Not sure if it's plug welded or the pin broke and was smashed in or what:dunno: it should be more obvious once I clean it up...many years of grease/grime on it.

S4 was my first fun car 2001 that ended up with upgraded turbos etc...long gone but I use the same handle on all forums.

Nice! $250 is a much better deal than the $650 someone was asking for a 386 in some place on CL called "Inland Empire". I have a welded up 386 parts vise that someone managed to snap the back buttress of the swivel jaw off, unfortunately with no pin. Let me know if you need a piece, but from the photo, yours is intact includng the garter.

Slotard: that is a pretty clean Cole vise, but I've seen them go for $50-75 and passed. for some reason they don't look as great up close like your big Reed 106 does.

how's the back tonight?

Price does seem excessive, I wasn't planning on buying it, just something interesting.

Back is fine at this point. Two weeks ago, the 204 1/2 Reed was the heaviest thing I'd lifted in months (thanks to an injury in October), and that was left handed, but tuesday the doctor told me to lift whatever as long as it didn't hurt and lifting a 133lb vise a couple times doesn't seem to have been a problem. I've lifted at least half again as much in the past with no problems (a Subaru engine, heads still on) but working at a desk without as much time time to wrench hasn't helped strength, nor has taking it easy for several months.

I put it on a scale and the seller was right, 133lb. I imagine these will vary by a few pounds thanks to rust etc.

http://sacramento.craigslist.org/tls/5488692215.html fairly odd vise, not sure I've seen one before.

00y0y_eyA9OVl8LQP_600x450.jpg

more pics there... almost like a combo between a bench vise and a post vise

Cole, they make a drill attachment for it as well. I have a Cole and use it often (no drill). One hole mount (easy on and off my welding table), very versatile: great jaw config and the body rotates 360 deg. A post can be added to provide additional support. They are 75 lbs or so. I paid $65 for mine and thought it was a good deal.

I picked up this 4" Columbian today for $30 (plus about $10 in gas). It is in very good shape and works nicely from what I can tell. Can anyone tell me anything about it? Age, value, etc.

The Rev. Scott just made new jaws for a Cole that I got for my buddy for 40 bucks. I am still waiting for pics but my buddy said that Mr. Scott made a gorgeous set of aggressive jaws for him. He was tickled.

Picked up this lil Palmgren No 00 this weekend for 5 bucks. It has the 2-1/2" jaws and is real clean. It came from the estate of a gun smith.

Howdy vise thread. Long time reader first time caller here. I've been looking to get a decent bench vise since I started coming on GJ. Right now I've got a little vise shaped object from Bessey that was 20$ when Lowe's got rid of all their Bessey stuff.

I watch Craigslist every day and there is just nothing around here... Until...

Looks like maybe something interesting? They want 35$ for it. Only thing I'm unsure of is what is going on with the large threaded rod on the bottom. Is it missing it's base or something? Was that how this particular vise came? I searched for American Scale Co #3 and found lots of American Scale Co vises but none called a #3.

Anyone know anything about this guy?

Hmm, most exposed screw vises are very light duty. I'm having a hard time getting any scale on that one. The big heavy ones are decent other than you have to be careful not to tear up the main screw threads.

The only thing for scale is that square tube. if it were 2" that's a big vise. I suspect it's 1"...

The screw is probably for making it a swivel on the bench top (needs a LARGE wing nut and a spreader plate for the bottom) but I suspect that threaded rod was added after someone broke the original swivel base.

Those are great and very useful vise's. I have two of them for my drill press, one is a non-tilt which I use more often. I like to use it as a third hand on the work bench and then carry it over to the DP. I have a tilting one that is bigger and the fit & finish is excellent. Their just good reliable tools to have in the shop.

Here's the fixed one I have that I painted and prior to reassembling.

Yeah, a search of Eprey for - American Scale . "#3" vise - Confirms it's 3-1/2" jaws and light duty... and it is missing the swivel base.

Riley: so is it legal to cast and copy a 100+ year old vise where the company is not existent any longer? have you thought about making a 300 pound vise at work as a side project and would the boss approve or want a duplicate?

I don't know how patent laws work but I'm fairly certain you can copy and create anything you like for your own use. Where you would run into legal trouble is when you try to sell a copy of a patented item.

As for making my own vise - I'm working on a plan now but I will probably only get one chance at it. The molten metal will come from leftover metal after pouring a larger casting. We always melt 500-1000lbs more than needed. The leftovers get poured into an open bin lined with molding sand to create a "pig". I would simply have to pay the cost of the metal as if it were scrap.

One of the challenges will be making a pattern. I could use an existing vise as a pattern, but I would be limited by whatever size I can get my hands on.

I could try my luck at hand carving a mold, but I suspect it would be pretty darn ugly.

The most ideal solution is to have one of our engineers draw up an existing vise and blow the scale up to whatever size I wanted. After the dimensions are set, I would deliver the prints to our pattern shop where a journeyman pattern maker would create a scale model pattern for the making of a vise

After you have a pattern, the next challenge will be designing the gating and runners for the casting. One could simply pour molten metal into a mold through a hole in the top but this creates all kinds of problems from turbulence in the metal that creates oxides inside the finished product (making it vulnerable to failures), to failures in the mold surface, like erosion. A casting requires a way to pour metal into a mold that minimizes the turbulence and (ideally) fills from the bottom (Pouring cup, runner, and riser). Finally, a riser is required to sit on top of a the heaviest portion of a casting and feed metal into the casting as it cools and shrinks. We use a computer simulation to determine the best gate, runner, and riser design - all of which I do not have access to.

In spite of the challenges, I am determined to give it a try.

The photo offers an explanation of how a gate/runner design is supposed to work.

If I still had Solidworks I'd offer to draw something up.

I have zero casting experience. Do you cast the slide/dynamic jaw all as one piece, then flycut the slide, finish machine the jaw?

We use Solidworks as well. If I could get a drawing made in SW, it would be a great start.

Yes, the dynamic jaw with slide would be one casting. The mold would require a core for the hollow slide. The sides and screw hole would need to be machined so the slide portion of the casting would have to be larger than the finished product - but I don't know how much. To play it safe, I'd make it at least 10% larger in diameter, which I am sure is overkill. I'm not sure about what style of jaw insert would be best, so that's still up in the air.

This vise appeared on local CL for $25. 5" American Scale Co. Any ideas? How heavy is it? Looks small from the pics.

Interesting stuff Rileysan.---You need to get with Demoman, he's contemplating casting a big vise.---And he likes them big.---You don't hear from him much but Brad is still around.---Between the both of you, I believe yaw could bring a project like this to fruition.---I sure would like to see that.---I believe yaw would start a trend or a company.---As Nike says ''JUST DO IT"
