Grab bag at the local flea market this morning:

Pics 1-3: all for $12. Lowes tote, with a few tools and lots of misc hardware. Once a few **** ChiCom tools were pitched that were just junk, included the following:

new grinder wheel, unknown valve opening tools, red cast iron utility knife, Craftsman crown-top retractable knife, Blackhawk 4218 fixed socket wrench c.1920s, couple of Kobalt USA 1/4-drive extensions and 3 matching sockets, Stanley awl, Giller dikes, slip joint pliers (no name, just USA), Bridgeport double offset screwdriver, metal X-Acto razor knife handle, Starrett micrometer, and some other odds and ends

Pics 4-6: Sigflex 793 windproof reflector pack, made by Signal-Stat. Box had some corrosion but inside reflectors were fine. $5 for the box.

Three stops this morning.
The first was a family run estate sale. Slim pickings in the detached garage/shed. I kept expecting to grab a rat while digging in the piles of trash. Sadly, the basement was boarded up, so there's no knowing what we could have been missing.

I got out with a small oiler and a Craftsman 1/4"-9/32" ignition wrench for $1.

The second stop was a charity yard sale. I didn't buy anything, but I missed out on a Corner Brace by a guy with a quicker reach. :dunno:

The third stop was just sad all around. It was at a house that I pass often. It's been abandoned w/ a tarp on the roof for five or more years now. The place is falling apart at the seams, literally. There were rot holes in the hardwood floors, the bathroom door had a broken hinge and kept falling as you passed, and you could see into the attic through the falling ceilings on the second floor out the roof to the blue tarp. Half the antique furniture that was left had severe water damage. It was truly heartbreaking.

The woman running the sale wasn't even close to running an event this weekend. She advertised the sale for 9am. There were 15 of us waiting and she wasn't there. At 9 one of the diehard's called her to find out where she was, and she was still in her slippers pouring her first cup of coffee. She was surprised that anyone was there already. Fortunately she lives around the corner, and was still putting her shoes on when she pulled into the driveway.

She claims that there are some old tools in the basement, but she couldn't open it up because she hasn't had a chance to clean up and sort through the boxes yet. WTF !!

I found a few things (her prices were high given the conditions), and left her my card to give me a call when the basement opens up.

For $25 I walked out (to go take a shower) with :

2 - art lights (anodized, not plated)
Litton/Butterfield #1701 [not the Enterprise :lol_hitti] metric tap & drill set

Down for awhile due to health reasons but that's not going to stop a dedicated GJ member from seeking out those deals. Sent my brother out to pick up this 1978 KRA 21C off Craigslist for me today. I really like these older Snap On small boxes $50

And here it is from the 1963 catalog. I was wrong, its 3/8 not 1/4!

Nice! I tried putting in one of the corded drills I have and it works perfectly! Though now that I've seen how awesome the aluminum corded drills look I might be trying to make it a complete set again. I imagine it's gonna look great wall mounted.

Wow, everyone is getting great stuff this week.

I went to an auction. Bought about 4 box lots that had a few decent items, also was some junk that I didn't bother taking pics of.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1457825572.901970.jpg
Then I bought this 36" Stillson wrench for $12
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1457825639.404698.jpg
Got out bid on a tool box of craftsman tools, but now l'm kinda glad I let the other bidder have it.

Wow incredible haul! It's like a different world here as far as tool hunting goes.

Also today was the opening day for the local tool auction. I left after 15 minutes... Absolutely nothing worthwhile at all. I'm hoping it was an off week since they are just starting back up.

I think Davefr wins this week! Was a rainy day here in NorCal, but decided to hit a couple sales out in Vallejo today. First was an estate sale, started at 8 but we showed up around 9:30 and the garage was already mostly cleaned out. Spotted a hand carry tool box in the corner and managed to come up with a soft/hard face hammer, carpenter's folding ruler, combination square, needle nose pliers, small vise grips, hacksaw blades, a small chisel, and a bunch of files. Total cost: $15. Hit 2 other yard sales but came up empty. Still a pretty good haul IMO.

Not too many tool vendors at the flea market today, but I managed a few things.
Scored the Rem Line box (with key) for $15! Has a neat logo on the pulls. Like a tin man of sorts. Any idea on its age?
Proto and SK ratchets, Duro/Indestro DBE, 1/4" drive Herbrand spinner handle, and a 'Fleet' extension - another $7.
Calling for rain tomorrow...

Another weekend that I had to work.... But I got a little luck I'm still working the power plant shut down in Ks. and checked for sales in the area... bingo. One within 5 minutes. I skipped lunch and hit it. No real killer bargains but it was more of a "fix" to my junk addiction .:shocking:
I spent 72.00 , quick , fast and in a hurry. Only bad thing was after a 12 hour day and no lunch I was starven like marvin ! My buddy at work said I may have serious issues... :lol_hitti
The highlights of my pick were an all original Wards Master Quality Axe, Plumb Hewing hatchet- original handle
Williams wrench set
Palmgreen 2-1/2 " Tilting vise
Crown logo Craftsman Chain wrench still packaged
Craftsman & proto ratchets
Union Tool Co. Protractor-I looked all over for the steel rule but no such luck
.44 piston cleaning kit.
Nice wooden box full of gun smith stuff.
Big folding handle draw knife
old 1930's Craftsman sharping stone still in it's box. The stone is very worn. Really cool thinking how many passes it took to wear it like that...

Rained out today so we went to visit with my youngest who is completing her last year in collage. From there we all went antiquing

They spent most of the just under $200 we left at the antique store (Really a Vintage/Antique store); this is what I got:

Old Track Cribbage board, with a couple of Ducks cut in. This is headed for a wal mount with several other "beard games" in the Family room - All wood. Three name plates, two Plvmb WF DBE wrenches ($3 for both), same size, but the odd part is; One is marked bas-akwards and the really odd thing is both are in the same orientation for Physical size and the lettering direction - the SIZES were reversed left to right... Some extra wood scrabble tiles I needed for an art project I'm playing with, and six "presidential" spoons. they had a bunch (Most); I got these 'cause the were more interesting to me. The set DIDN't have Lincoln, Wilson, FDR, or Kennedy... Other than that hte sey may have been complete

The six I got are Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Andy Jackson, Grant and Teddy R. $2 each

Remline tool boxes where made by the Advertising Metal Display company and the tin man was their logo. If you look behind the metal tag there should be a 2 digit number stamped in the metal of the drawer that should indicate what year the box was made.

Went out for a barn sale not to far down the road. The place was set up like a flea market lots of tables with lots of ****. They said they opened a couple of times a month. Anyway the wife went down the knickknack isle and I went down the tool isle.

Picked this off the framing of the barn. Looked dirty rusted and heavy, just like me.

FP-BA-20225 I'm guessing that Federal Products model BA-20225.
Paid a buck for it. E-bay have them listed at 125.00.

Very nice find indeed! Grats!

I think I know the sale you are talking about. I have seen them advertise on CL for months and I haven't wanted to make the trip (I avoid crossing the bridge like the plague).

I plan on doing the floors in my kitchen and living room with the Allure Plank GripStrip flooring available at Home Depot, I did a bathroom job using it and it was easy to install and came out really nice. Since the kitchen and living room job is much bigger I picked up this vinyl flooring cutter on craigslist for $100. I brought a sample piece to make sure it will work with the material I am using, and it cut great. Now I don't have to worry about slicing my fingers with a utility blade on every cut.

some great finds, I am still waiting for spring to come so people will start having yard sales again. I see that the local auction has one planed the first Saturday of next month. It will be crazy with people that has had cabin fever. So most prices will be high.

This morning I went to an "Indoor Flea Market" that was being held at an auction house that advertised as having vendors selling tools. I should have known better. It turned out to be tables full of cleanout leftovers with only three people running the whole thing. My impression was that the auction house was trying to clean out the trash. Meanwhile, one of the ladies was cutting her husband's hair while their dog ran around ******* people's legs. I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

So, to appease my addiction, I made a run up to a "real" flea market (it makes me ill to describe a Chinese/Hispanic firetrap as a flea market. The outdoor tables aren't too bad, but indoors it's a rabbit warren reminiscent of the Japanese tunnels on Midway and Guam.)

There was a New Britton hex drive socket set there that I had a hard time walking away from. The case was in decent shape for its age, but the contents were a mix and in bad shape for the money he wanted (at least by my reckoning, others may disagree). He wanted $40 for it, if it doesn't sell that may change. :dunno:

I spent $3 and came home with :

S-K #40190 1/2dr universal (locked up)
Proto (USA) #1224 3/4" combo wrench

Not much, but it appeased the cravings. For now.

Davefr-killer Plomb haul! And Topop with the rhft flex and the Williams.

Top, I'm assuming you meant "Pistol" and not piston!

Ditto 3bay on the massive Plvmb score and Craftsman Flex head RHFT - you don't see a lot of those...

You should post that pic! I'm always tempted by those "broken in" sharpening stones, but generally pass on them for the "as new" sharpening stones.

Jake I make it a habit to indicate to overpriced sellers, especially "regulars" that its overpriced. I'l make a reasonable offer and if they take it, great! If not I set it down and walk.

I've often been called back with acceptance or a better counter often, but unless the counter is also "in range" I pass. This helps set expectations and I can say at least two sellers give me much better prices, often that I can just take.

If an estate sale, maybe its still there on "Half off day" and maybe it isn't; and in any case, I'm still "training" the sellers...

If it was "overpriced" and I still buy it, it was because I either a) had an immediate use and really needed it (and ti was better than buying new), or it was something I really wanted it to complete something; which in those cases, it wasn't so overpriced.

I view pricing as somewhat of a game: I like getting tools, but I would be broke if I always paid asking price. Almost always there is the "I'd like to get X for it, but I'll accept Y" factor...

Then there are the usuck "get it out of here!" pricings, and those you simply have to not break your arm or rip out the pocket getting the wallet out! :pimpflash

Yesterday was a blast guys! I went to a house clean out sale at a hoarder house. Two guys have been working on this place for a while and opened up to sell to the public last weekend. They were doing fill a box with whatever for $5!

I was there for 2 hours rummaging and digging. I stopped at the flea afterward and was showing my haul to two buddies and they immediately wanted to go there. We hopped in our three vehicles and they followed me back over for 2 more hours of digging and fun!

Took a few pictures of the only lit basement room! This place was nuts. Heaping piles of junk 4 feet high at some point, we weren't even touching the floor anywhere in this room! What happened was the water main broke and every wood, metal, cardboard container in this room rotted . The room then got ripped to shreds by the first customers. Broken glass and rusty metal everywhere.

I swear I dreamt this before. The three of us flea buddies side by side digging through a massive hoard. It was great. I can't imagine what was in this house before the clean out started. There were hundreds of old glass bottles and China pieces. Apparently they already sold 1,000 blue mason jars to a decorator.

Some crappy cell pics:

SNIP! two Plvmb WF DBE wrenches ($3 for both), same size, but the odd part is; one had the sizes label going one way, the other then the other has it the other but the wrenches also reverse.

Correction(and fixed the orig post: = One is marked bas-akwards and the really odd thing is both are in the same orientation for Physical size and the lettering direction - the SIZES were reversed left to right...

I was rushed and half

The trick to those strain relief's is having pliers suitable for compressing them, otherwise its a pain... But nice fund. I've done the same and have a supply of 2 different sizes.

I should grind a spare pair of pliers for that since I've never found a "Made for it" pair...

It just so happens that a year or two ago I picked up the special took to install and remove these. It makes a big difference over forcing them out with a pliers.

Jake I make it a habit to indicate to overpriced sellers, especially "regulars" that its overpriced. I'l make a reasonable offer and if they take it, great! If not I set it down and walk. ……………………………………

Oh, I can be very good at that game when I choose, and I did play for a bit. But I've bought from this seller before and I could tell that he wasn't in the mood today.

In addition, it dawned on me as I was starting the dance that the only reason I was interested in the set was because the GJ Gremlins in the back of my head were screaming that I HAD to bring it home. Those damned gremlins have cost me a lot of money over the years. New Britton isn't even a brand I'm interested in normally.

… … … still, that box was cool though … … …
Shut Up !!
… … … but with just a little cleaning … … …
NO, NO NO !!!! STOP IT !!!!!!!!!!!
… … … and a coat of wax … … …

Matt - I really like those strain relief pliers. I didn't even know they existed. A pair of those would have come in handy back when I was rebuilding hundreds of theatrical lights, converting from asbestos cables to new plastic sheathed wiring. My boss back then was a cheap *******, he never would have bought a pair. But I would have given a weeks wages out of my own pocket if I had known they were available.

and had those "little voices" said something like "It's only $5 (or so...)" you would have been posting pics!

So leaving it in this case was a good thing! :pimpflash

Dang 3Bay, that's my kind of sale!

Yeah it was fun. My buddies loaded up about 12 boxes and buckets yesterday and were going back for more today. One is a weekly flea vendor, so he loaded up on everything salvageable and salable.I threw the towel in yesterday. Breathed in enough sooty dust and saw everything, though impossible.

On the second run I was digging and saw a cast iron handle under my feet. After a few pulls, I yanked out a big Wagner chrome plated skillet from between my legs like Sword in the Stone :lol_hitti. I loaded up another box for $5. Some more nice bottles, more tools, and some good smalls.

The guys bought dozens of bottles, cases of old beer cans, dishes, buckets of rusty tools, old fire extinguishers, all kinds of stuff. We kept pulling out power tools that were too far gone. We were literally standing on rusty saw blades,a hedge trimmer, broken glass, and spilled hardware everywhere. The books and paper items were all ruined down there.

I will post some more pics this week. Pulled out a few gems. A unique old KR Wilson in there. I also hit another sale with some nice tools.
