2 buys, one skip. I feel that I might weight the skip higher since exmaxima1's avatar is a vise, however. ;)

Did this come with a swivel base, do you know?

I do quite a bit of cutting aluminum. Will those shavings get on the exposed screw and cause issues with the function of the tool?

Yes it came with a swivel. Most all cheap vises with round bases were swivel models. The exposed screw is not much of issue with big shavings (like wood chips), but filings can bind them up.

Just hold out a bit longer. FWIW, the 85 lb vise in my avatar cost me $25 (not counting the restoration hrs).

I'd hold off unless you need it. I've seen better deals out there.

If you are looking for a nice vise for even moderate duty use, I'd skip it. There are much better deals to be had. Unless the market is tremendously different there from what it is here, you should be able to find a much heavier duty, enclosed screw, vintage US machinist vise for under $40.

Come back OP and tell us . . . . what all comes up on CL in Austin, TX ???

Now that missing swivel has been pointed out, you have bargaining power to beat down Seller on price. Being an open-screw vise also hurts it's value.

Did you make a deal ??

Sorry guys, I stopped getting notifications of replies for some reason :(

I've decided against it, exmaxima1's keen eye on the missing swivel did it for me. I didn't get the feeling the guy was ready to bargain. I'm planning on getting a vise and dropping it in my electrolysis bath (I refurbish Coleman stoves and lanterns). I don't want to spend the effort on something that's missing parts.

Here is the search I'm using: http://austin.craigslist.org/search/tla?query=vice|vise&sort=rel

I just put that into IFTTT.com and it'll notify me if anything that hits that search pops up. Around Austin we have a very active 'antiquing' community and I suspect that vises get snapped up and sold at these huge antique stores we have around here. That's next on my list of options if CL doesn't pan out in the next month or so.

I'm hoping for a Monarch, the lion head is awesome. That or a Reed, but truthfully I might like a few lower end Vises to strip and refurb before I delve into any true Americana restoration.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I think I'll like it here.
