Responded to an add on CL - some machines for sale. Worked out a deal for a couple of them and the nice fellow threw in all the machines and a bunch of extras for the agreed price - $200.00.
Got an Atlas horizontal mill, a Southbend 7" shaper, a Butterfly die filer, Excelsior power hack saw, Dunlap bench grinder, Craftsman belt/disk sander, pipe threader and dies (not powered), Craftsman bench vise, and some sort of pipe vise/bender
They are rusty and the electric motors are all frozen up. The machines are all free after loosening up the gibs and PB Blaster.

Getting started on the shaper restoration first.

Awesome! Looks like you have your work cut out for you but they will be great to have when they are up and running.

What a cool collection of old tools and the price is amazing. That horizontal mill is so cute (said in my best little baby voice that I used to use with my kids).

This is to add to my collection - 1918 Southbend lathe (13x7), Craftsman 12x36 lathe, and 1930's DP220 drill press. Not sure where I am going to put them. Had to move the Vette out to make room for the resto's (the corvette was the reason I built the shop).

Wife still thinks I am going to be selling some of them. Maybe the die filer? I had never even heard of that machine before? Though about the hacksaw, but wow, I love watching it move and I'm only doing it my hand. Cool old machine.

Anybody have any 1/2 to 3/4 hp motors to sell? I broke down the Southbend's GE 1/2 hp - total rust. Probably not rebuild-able.

Yipes, while you may have gotten a "good" deal, I would shudder to think of trying to repair/restore them. I wish you luck! I am looking forward to seeing this thread progress. :D

That little Atlas mill looks like it was in a chicken coop lol, I'm jealous though...have the same machine and someone removed the X-axis power feed gearboxes and driveshaft.

You could probably make your investment back parting it out.

Nice haul OP . . . . lots of work ahead of you, but you'll see fruits from your labor !!

Post up more pics of the grinder, old Craftsman motor, and CM vise.

By the way, if that vise is something you want to get rid of . . let me know !! ;)

Like I tell the wife - this is what keeps me out of trouble and sane.... but restoring stuff keeps me up at night.
The mill looks rough but it all moves and is rust free inside. The shaper also.
The Southbend lathe was rough also. Took a couple of weeks to bring her back. She gets used all the time

If you get that power hacksaw up and running, watch out there is a pinch point on the pull stroke that can remove a finger.

Damn.. that's some major suckage right there.

I have one of those Atlas mills and it's capable of a heck of a lot more than you'd think given the small size and light weight.

Great score - congrats. I have a Butterfly die filer, but it needs to be restored too, but they are really handy little tools to have. I also have a similar, but different shaper - Mine's an AMMCO 7". It is the coolest little tool to watch run. The South Bend is a fine machine, perhaps better than the AMMCO. Mine's not restored, just cleaned up. Keeping us posted on your progress.

I have been looking for a shaper since I missed out on a big one a while back. I thought too long. It was a floor model and I didn't have room. It worked out in the end (I hope).

First and foremost, +1 on the You ****.

I'm so glad that those found their way to you - someone who appreciates them and will give them some TLC and bring them back from the dead. That would have been such a shame if they got scrapped.

Please post some pics as the projects progress.

I can't wait to see them "in their former glory" making chips!

Congrats on a great find!

Have you found www.owwm.org ? Lots of people with a ton of knowledge on the old machines. Also a good place to find parts... Good luck with the restoration. I restore old woodworking machines...most in similar condition to those machines. I love the old machines - they are more robust and easier to work on than the Chiwanese **** they sell now.

Little update on the shaper restore. Took it all apart and put most in the electrolysis tanks (had 2 running). Wire brushed and oven cleaner used. Primed and painted. Started reassembly. Need to finish the motor bracket and find a usable motor (want to stay vintage). New gib screws arrived after I came in for the evening. Grabbed a 4" shaper vise off eBay for $60.00 also.
Sourcing some 1/8 copper tubing to redo the oil system and resoldering.
Need to figure out a rolling stand for this and the mill - running out of room fast.

Set the ram in top, just because.

Woah! What a score. Major suckage!
That is some beautiful vintage iron. Glad to see it being saved. Too many people these days just see those things as junk and scrap them.

Alright, the shaper is done and working. I think I found a place for it (for now). The Atlas mill might even be able to sit next to it on the bench, but the vise will have to move.
Got the mill torn down today and the table and base are in the electrolysis tank.

Looks nice, but I believe the surface where the table support rides should be bare metal. That's been the case on all the shapers I've seen, since the table travels back & forth across that area.

The bare strip I am going to have to fix that. It is so pitted from rust. Thinking of a "cap" of sorts. Maybe 1/4 plate and Tig some threaded studs on the bottom. Drill and attach from below.

Here is a video of it running.

Wow, the progress you've made is astounding! What did you use for the cleaning/electrolysis? Do you mind posing a photo of your electrolysis tank? What kind of oven cleaner? Those came out way better than I thought they would. Keep up the good work!

I'm pretty sick right now... I have the same Atlas Mill but mine is missing the quick change gear box and the u-joint on the table feed is broken. I have also been looking for a small hobby shaper like that Southbend for a while, I need to start back cruising N.O. CL for deals again. If you decide to part that mill out, let me know!

Great job on the shaper, can't wait to see the rest of the machines working.

Nine4 - you just keep to your area. Haha.
Ordered the bearings for the mill last night. This thing has a whole lot of parts.....and I didn't take a whole lot of pics.

Tack weld a file to the bottom of the foot and it'll take care of itself after a while ;-)

I wouldn't really worry too much about the pitting. Strip the paint, knock off the high spots and let her run.

  If you get a chance, please post the part numbers to the bearings, I would like to get some in advance for when I run up on the gearbox at a decent price I want to go through this machine. Mine actually cleaned up well, original paint and all but without the gearbox it's just taking up room atm. Mine has the original stand as well. I'm pretty sure I have the parts list exploded diagram of the mill if you can't find one and if you need any pics of a part or how somethings goes back together on it, let me know and I will be happy to help if I can.

If there was ever an example of an old machine that found the proper new home then this is it. Looking forward to the telling of all your adventures.

What beautiful stuff, sir.

Oh, and you ****!

I have to say that you did a fantastic job on that scraper. It looks like a new one. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the machines done up proper.

Nine4 - Timken 07196 (need 2), Timken 07100, Timken 07087. Found some on eBay. Not too bad. Spindle belt is Gates 3280. Hopefully it will all be here by the end of the week.
You don't happen to have an extra ball handle for the table feed do you? $50-60 on eBay.
Want to sell the stand? Haha. I need to make rolling stands for both machines.

This was 2 coats all brushed on - didn't feel like setting up and cleaning the gun. Have a gallon of Rustoleum Professional Dove Grey and Clean Metal Primer (white). It matches the spray can Dark Machine Grey pretty well (what I used on the Parker Vise and Delta DP220).

Model A - I use a large Rubbermaid tote and a bus tray for the tanks. I have used baking soda but am now using washing soda (seems to work better and a little cleaner). I have a couple HF battery chargers and use a small 12volt batter to "jump start" the charger (the charger needs to see the load). Just a quick touch to the battery terminals and you will see the amps jump up. I'll take a pic later but it's nothing special. Couple of pieces of clean steel wired to the positive alligator clip. Use a piece of romex to a clean part of the victim.

As to the oven cleaner - I get it from the dollar store. Yellow can. They have never asked but I am sure they wonder why I buy 10-12 cans at a time. Haha.
