whats this tool used for?

I bought a nice little socket set of various bits at a car boot (yard) sale on Sunday (Beta ratchet & sockets, Halfords ratchet & extensions etc) & inside was this tool.

Its 1/2 drive, 30mm overall length, has a 12 point external dive external spline as shown (outer diameter is approx 23mm) & has also 2 flats machined at the 1/2 drive end (for a open ended spanner perhaps)

My first thought is that its a similar tool to the ones used for changing alternator free wheel clutches (I have a similar one for VW alternators) but am unsure what this one is for??

Just a wild guess but it LOOKS like the security wrench that comes with some fancy wheels to let you loosen the security lug on the wheels. JUST a guess. Mike.

Yes- rlitman and schmitty are correct. It is some version of a freewheel tool- used to remove the gearset from the rear wheel of a bicycle.

I agree it's probably a bike tool, but I'd guess cassette before freewheel (yes, I'm splitting hairs). Not sure a bottom bracket tool can be ruled out either...

It's way too small to be a bottom bracket tool.
I guessed freewheel because of the spline length. Look at the link above on Amazon to the cassette tool. They have much less engagement, because you're just spinning off the lock ring, and not the whole body like you are with a freewheel.

Not for a Campy. They use 12-splined tools that measure 22.8mm across on at least one BB.
