Tallted: Very nice vise! Congrats! I have my grandfather's vise too with similar memories although they involve a plum tree and green onions - no ice cream though. GForceJunky is right - there are no better tools than those passed down. Enjoy.

Thanks guys! Yeah I am itchin for that garage. I will be starting a thread pretty soon.
As for the vise I definitely plan on cleaning it up and getting it properly lubed. I dont know about paint. Its been beat on pretty hard and might look weird.

TallTed: great story and Rock Island vises are maybe my favorite. congrats on your first house purchase and hope you it serves you well. also congrats on overcoming missing a few fingers on your hand. must be tough, but it bet you are a great person. my daughter has spina bifida and has and will be in a wheelchair her entire life, but she just graduated from ASU, drives and hasn't asked me to help her probably since she could talk. I DO IT DADDY was all I have ever herd from her and she's 25 now and living on her own.

VA: I bet that little vise might be worth 3 GOLDEN MONKEYS. I can't say I've seen a vise that small with a wrench yet. thanks for sharing.

Wow that's wonderful! I am a behavior specialist now and work with kids with developmentap disabilities. I have had a few kids with spina bifida as well as developmental delays.
The hardest part of 7 fingers is holding two wrenches at once [emoji14]

This is a table vise.

This is a bench and a table side by side.

And this is an example of just a bench vise.

GET: i'd guess you are not far behind and maybe the second or third post Google mentions showing your driveway with one on a cool stand. :D

ALL: HONARABLE MENTION:

1) Sea of Tetness (Zoomie)
2) Large and in charge (Demo)
3) Vise Heaven (JOE)
4) Pretty in Paint (KM)
5) and the list goes on

and there are others to mention but the sun is shining and I need to run mow the lawn.

cheers all

Ok, so a table vise has the clamp that goes down under the table... when I google image searched "table vise" I saw plenty of bench vises.

Hang on :-/ That's a covered exposed screw clamp on swivelling twin horned anvil vise!

What exactly does it not have? :)

EDIT: ... and it looks like one of the forged blacksmith bench vises at that.

That is cool. It was made for a specific purpose I bet. A certain job or craft.
I like it. Better send it to me for closer inspection. It may take a while!!!!:rocker:

Loydski: that vise looks almost invisable on that bench and right at home. nice eye because I bet there are a lot of us that have been there and not seen it.

I can't tell you how many vises I must have walked by when I was younger selling old homes and farms. I even had a tenant LEAVE ME AN ANVIL and I was so pissed at the rest of the mess he left me I think I gave it away because I couldn't move it. go figure.

JOE: Like I said VISE HEAVEN. I haven't seen one that small with so many cool things included. it's not the size it's how you use it is so true here.

CW: BTW if you load up that Parkinson's vise stand and have some of your vice family on it and next to it we'll have to give it some catchy name. have you set the stand up yet??

Just got me a baby Shepard.

Baby weighs 5.4 lbs., big one weighs 46.6 lbs.

Baby's jaws are 2'', big one's jaws are 4 1/2''

I don't normally go for the exposed screw vises but that coachbuilders Shepard is very nice. Leather would be just the thing on those jaws.

That makes no sense. If there was no hole there, what were you pushing on with the screw jack you made?

Ive disassembled close to 30 different swivel jaw vises and every single one of them had a hole underneath. Usually they are just caked with years of crud in there to the point where you don't even see it.

disassemble down to the static jaw (with the seized swivel jaw), set it upside down in the grass, use a short length of 1/2 bar stock snaked thru the center hole (swivel base) - a couple of raps will drive the pin out.

Picked up this Reed 406R last week - It's not perfect but real nice. 146 lbs. - bubbling away right now. I'll post up when I'm done - with the comparative soda can.

Oak, you've cottoned on to a beauty there.---That one ain't been used much.---Like Get said, that thing will clean up nice.

I have a 406, and like always, I wouldn't take a gold monkey for it.

Notice the tolerances between the swivel jaw and the static body.---Reed has the closest in the business IMO.---Makes them look so much more quality driven.

Now we only have 2 more sizes to go.---The 7 inchers are hard to find and the 8 inchers have never been seen.

Very nice, that looks to be in excellent shape for the age. Should clean up well.

You know you'll need to post some naked pics of her after her bubbly.

PS: Nice blacksmith vise in the background.

Ive got the opportunity to pick up this unmarked vice.. It only has a '3' on the one side.. It does appear to be fairly old from the paint and the font on the number. Im just wondering if anyone can tell me anything further about it. he wants 30 bucks for it

^ ^ ^ Chinese knockoff typical 3" vise . . . .
. . that number on side and no markings is tell tale sign of PRC. They also have 4, 5 & 6.

Not sure what you have available in area on Kiiji/Craigslist but $30 sounds high for Chinesium. It will work but I'd talk him down on price.

Looks nice. I'm a little surprised that the swivel jaw and base only add 13lb vs the 106 that I have.
