what's a day without a t8 thread?--cheap fixtures and tubes at home depot

Time for my T8 project:

HD has lithonia 8 ft 4 tube fixtures for a newly reduced price of $39. Also phillips bulbs in 4100 degree for $15/10 tubes. The price was too compelling not to first research, and then purchase. Purchased 6 fixtures (24 tubes) for my 21x28. Will install after i finish the last coat of mud and prime, so it may be a month before my RFI report.

But:
Called Lithonia tech support, who told me that their GESB and RE ballasts, rated residential, are what we want for cold weather, radio enjoying lighting using four foot tubes. All of their other ballast designations--geb10is, geb10rs, etc-- are commercial quality, meaning don't turn on the radio.

Back to home depot: the lithonia product number on price reduction ends in GE. Lithonia says GE is a home depot specified commercial ballast (I read extra cheap, which is why they are on extra discount, but I digress). The fixtures on display are not marked GE but rather GESB. Don't know if that's old stock or what, but an additional call to Lithonia aasures they are the residential ones. These stock numbers--TC 232 120 1/4 gesb-- are actually in the lithonia catalog, available to all dealers, FYI, so I'm hoping they are not home depot extra cheapot.

The ballasts are accupro AP-RC-4321P-1.

Also, they clarrified some matters discussed in other posts here about t8's:
Someone wondered if "outside" rated fixtures cause RFI. They tell me outside simply means it's ok to use in damp places, including indoors, and has no bearing on RFI.

Someone wondered if the low thd ballasts equaled low RFI. Don't know what the harmonic distortion interferes with, but again they say that has nothing to do with RFI.

Then there's a noise rating. They told me noise is noise, not RFI.

So, don't really know if this helps, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this purchase, and passing along price reduction report. At least, HD lets me return them without a fuss if I'm wrong.

Sounds like a good deal. The only thing I'd say is that I like the 6500K lights a lot better than the 4100K. Bright.

They weren't when I looked a couple weeks ago. See post above for the model number.

Are these available on their website? Do y ou have a link? I'm definitely interested, looking to wire up my 20x20 2 car.

Both HD and Lowes web sites **** as far as finding everything in inventory. I don't know how many times I've had to go in the stores to find X becuase I knew they had it but it doesn't show up on the web.

I was looking at some lithonia lights too, they had acupro AP RS 2321S 120 ballasts. they said on the box they were rated for residential use and were priced at $18.36 I believe these were at lowes and they were marked as new to the store.

I purchased an 8 foot t8 that uses 4 - four foot bulbs. The unit causes radio interference when the light is turned on. Turn off the light and the radio works fine.

This is a Cooper brand, bought at Lowes. The ballast is a Universal Lighting B4321UNVHP-A. The box has "commercial" on it.

Because of reading the garage journal I was suspicious of RF interference. I will buy one unit at a time until I find a good one, then buy the other 9 that I need. I suppose I could go to T12, that is supposed to work better.

Funfer, According to Lithonia, you want their models numbers ending in either GESB or RE, assuming you're looking for residential balasts. They further told me that 4 foot T8 bulbs light in colder temperatures than 8' with these balasts.

mhm993,
Thanks for researching this and posting your findings. I just picked up 10 of the 24 Lithonia 4 ft. 2 bulb T-8 fixtures from HD that I will be installing in my shop. They are labeled with GESB and are 26 bucks and change. The same light with the same ballast but having the reflector was 38 and change.

My 2c on lighting.

This T8 ballast works good: ADVANCE ICN-4P32 SC. Purchased from an electrician.

I have spent at least 6 hours researching this on the garage journal.
I have visited stores, took apart devices and looked at ballasts, looking for a good one.
I bought one fixture from Lowes, for $40, and tried it. Static city. Radio interference. I returned it.

Yesterday I punted on the fiercely independent DIY attitude I like to have and stopped by a local electrician. He confirmed the cheap **** you can buy at Lowes, HD, Menards. He pulled a unit off his shelf, gave me two 4000 series and two 6000 series bulbs and said try these. It works fine. No noise. Nice T-8 lights with the bulb choice I got to try and I am happy. I will order the other 7 I need today. Cost $55 ea, but that is not too bad considering the time and agony I have spent trying to find a cheap price on a good bulb.

I am really ready to put this whole 'which light to buy' thing behind me. My advice is sooner or later it pays to go talk to the pro, someone who knows, they exist out there, and they can be helpful.

In hindsight I spent way too much time making a light choice for my garage.

This thread made me wonder about the fixtures I have in my garage. They are T-8 Lithonia from HD. The ballasts are rated to start down to 0 degrees. Admittedly, it was that feature and the price (about 38 bucks I think) for the fixture with the wrap around diffuser that drove my purchase. So, I tried the radio tonight...lots of inteference! I never checked it before because I get my radio on the computer so it's streaming audio instead of radio.

You've got the same ones I do, but with the diffuser. I haven't tried them yet, but it sounds like I better fill up the I pod.

That is interesting. I have researched so much on this site about lights and Lithonia T8's are the ones that most say DON'T bother there radio. Having said that there are also notes that in some areas of the country radio interference is worse than others.

I have 7 OLD fluorescent lights in my garage here in Iowa. Not a single problem with radio interference..........

I started this thread, and finally finished up the mud, paint, and electric. The Lithonia GESB fixtures are pretty cheap and crappy, but you get what you pay for. With 6 4bulb fixtures, there's virtually no RFI. None at all unless the fixtures closest the the radio are on, and even then, after adjusting the antenna, it's virtually non-existent, though not 100% so.
I check off the wood building, no RFI box on that poll.

Older thread but my update.

Yep, hung 17, 4 bulb units. Everyone one of them fired right up and left them on for 24 hours to burn in. No problems at all so far! ZERO radio interference for me.

Had a few 30 degree days so far and they all come on with no flicker. They come on a little less bright, but warm up within a few minutes to high brightness.

The real test though will be this winter when temps hit 10 below!

bucs012...I bought the same lights per your earlier posts. Thanks for the suggestions. Did you buy the 4100K or 6500K bulbs?

I actually have a mixture of each. I think I like the 6500k best. Now if I had went with 20+ fixtures opposed the the 17, I would probably like the 4100k more, but I did not go overkill.

"left them on for 24 hours to burn in."
what does that mean?
I am slowly switching over to t8 lights in my garage,6 changed out so far.
I did not run them for 24 hrs. to burn them in,and so far so good.

To fully break them in. reach their full potential. Some boxes note this on them when you buy the bulbs. I think they usually say 8-10 hours though. ;)
