Impact Sockets Feel Very Tacky

I received a Kobalt Made in USA 3/8" Metric Impact Socket Set today, and the sockets feel very tacky / sticky. The chrome on the socket rail also appears to be flaking (not really a big deal since its inevitable with the constant removing and replacing of sockets). As far as the tackiness / stickiness goes, there is residue noticeable and not sure where it originated from. These sockets were New Old Stock (Sealed). Any idea what I can do without having to return this?

Ah, thanks for bringing that to my attention. As the previous poster pointed, I should just use them and move on, should settle itself overtime then. I've been used to buying fresh stock. Never anticipated purchasing old new stock, but the price was irresistible.

Thats the factory protection. Its been on there since 2002. No rust in 14 years? I think it performed well.

I have a Metric set showing up from Cripe tomorrow. I already have the Deep SAE set, and they came with the same sticky film over them. Collected every bit of dirt and dust until they got some use. Excellent sockets, and are just re-branded Snap-On from the same era.

Bought both sets recently and noticed the same thing. I just took a rag, wetted it down with kroil and then spun each socket on the impact in the rag. Cleaned off the factory goo and oiled em up real nice.

Its interesting to see these sockets being available after all these years. These days most of the Kobalt Impact stuff is Made in Taiwan; I'm sure these Williams Rebranded sockets will last a lifetime. I don't use SAE much, especially on the impact end, probably this $26 set won't be useful to me, right?

Haha, what are the odds of ever breaking one of these impact sockets?
On the other hand, I do like variety, I'll probably go for a different line of Made in USA sockets when the time necessitates for a set of SAE-type.

I'll be buying sets of Williams USA for Metric deep and SAE shallow to have sets that match. I may throw in a Snappy 8mm Deep, just to compare, haha.

Winlinmac how did you ever remove that tacky cosmoline from all your sockets, did you use protective gear and any mild acidic products in order to remove the cosmoline?

I left them as is. I'd rather have a protective layer of something doing its job rather than removing it and inviting rust.

What he said. A protective coating to prevent rust.

If the tackiness bothers you as you fondle your sockets, you could actually use them and that will wear the coating off in most places. You could also clean them with brakeclean, WD40, any good weapons cleaning like Hoppees or Breakfree CLP would also take care of the issue.

In a tool box in my non climate controlled garage. I have camphor blocks, desiccant packets, and vci papers in every drawer, but most of the broaches have surface rust. It is what it is.

Over the past couple weeks I have ordered the SAE deep and metric shallow sets mentioned in this thread, as well as a few 1/2" drive larger size singles (20-27mm, and 1 1/16-1 1/4") from Cripe. Found a used Kobalt USA 1/2" drive metric shallow set on Ebay (missing 15mm), and built sets of 1/2" SAE shallow and 3/8" SAE shallow from Snap On singles from Ebay. I blame you guys

P.s. If anyone has a 1/2" drive Kobalt 15mm, Snap On 1/2" drive 3/4, 13/16, or 3/8" drive 1/2", LMK
