I think its from the 80's. That set is a Thorsen clone.

^ yeah.... sounds about right. Thorsen made it for Wards.

(spinner might have been made by somebody else - doesn't look anything at all like a #80M Thorsen.)

I have that same set, bought it used in the late 70s. I do believe it was made by Thorsen

I don't see any thing missing, I fact you have more than came with it. The upper corner was empty to put your loose nuts and screws in.

Sounds about right.
The sticker says it is a 42 piece set. I count 28 pieces in their recesses. So there's 14 pieces that had to have fit into that corner somehow (unless they counted the box as a piece).
