Handy Little Vise

This is the handiest little vice. It's a no-name vice that I use frequently. The jaws are 1.25 inches wide and open to 1.75 inches. i use it when I need to hold something small and grind it down or sand it down. Let's say I have a 5/16ths X 3/4" bolt and I need to grind it down to 5/16ths X 3/8ths. I'll chuck it up in this vice and never worry about sanding down the ends of my fingers. (which I have done!) I paid $3 for it at Andy Andersen's used tool store in Santa Monica, Cal. many years ago.

I bought something like that about 12 years ago when I used to race R/C cars. I'd clamp it on the table at the track and everybody would use it. I still have it and use it in the gun room.

Got it for $10 when HF was online only around these parts.

I actually just recently bought a little Yost clamp vise on Amazon...have it in the basement. Cost more than $10, but US made.

That's a nice one JRC3. I've thought about painting mine. Maybe I will this summer.

Thanks Richard. I never mount mine, I always use it freehand. I've got a couple of Wilton's for larger things I need to work on.

No pics at the moment but I have an older Stanley Handyman vise that is sized similarly to yours, op. I actually leave it clamped to an end table in my living room, and have used it a surprising amount of times for little tasks.

Someone posted pics in the vise thread of a salesman example vise from one of the bigger vise mfgs, wanting to say Prentiss, that looked like a full size machinist vise (with covered lead screw) only sized similar to our little vises.

I've got a little clamp on vise like that too and yeah they are handy. I still don't have a permanent work bench to mount a large vise to so I use that or a vacu-vise. I need to step up my plans to build a real solid work bench now, since I finally got a nice ol' vise!

I picked up a 2 1/2" Stanley USA clamp-on vice for my wife's jewelry business.
She uses it to make silver and cooper bracelets and necklaces.

These are a couple little guys I use all the time. I restored the red one. it is pretty neat.
The other gets used to much to think about taking it out of service for a restoration.
