Ford F250 axle nut socket?

This is a 1997 Ford F250 with 7.3L engine and extended cab. I'm trying to help someone fix a broken shaft. It appears to have a Dana 50 front axle. The hubs are manual.

The problem is that the diameter of the 3/4 drive 2 3/4" socket he had was too big to take the nut loose. I don't remember if the nut had rounded corners - I found a 2 3/4" rounded corner socket http://www.toolsource.com/wheel-bearing-locknut-socket-t95t-1197-rounded-p-108029.html .

I found a link to http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1055837-d50-spindle-nut-socket.html that said the 6 point socket was for the automatic hubs, and the 4 pin socket was for the manual hubs. My 97 f350 had a Dana 60 front end and utilized the 4 pin style socket. It was hard to get it engaged because some ***** had used a punch and hammer at some point in its life. This had chewed up the nuts. After I got them out I used a file to dress the nuts.

You can get thin axle nut sockets made out of stamped steel. OTC makes them.

Doesn't the top center one fit. It's a four tab socket like that, not a hex. Unless someone did something custom at some point

No, the nut that is on it is 2 3/4" hex. I think someone changed it over to manual with the warn kit above, and didn't use the 4 pin nut.

go to the auto parts store and purchase the socket you need, If you were closer I would let you use mine.

Mine had 4-tab timken lock nuts doubled up, i believe its a KD tools 3937 or something like that, its actually easier to use on an impact though they recommend against that however it requires alot of forward pressure dute to all the grease in there, there are two of these nuts stacked on top of each other so don't take one off and start beating on it. Its been a while but i think that is the number

Maybe the other hex socket will fit.

I think manual hubs are supposed to have 4 tab lock nuts. This one seems to be ... custom...

In a pinch I bought the only socket I could find locally on a Saturday to get the axle nut off my Ram. Its and impact and didn't fit in the hub, so a friend turned it down in his lathe. Its worked fine ever since.
