Looking to get some advice and pointers on how to approach my garage floor. I want to freshen it up but I am on a budget. Could not really spend more than $1000.00 - I might be able to stretch to $1500.00

The garage floor is older. It has some spalling and some spots that need to be repaired - meaning there are two area where I think the salt broke down the concrete. I live in Minnesota so lots of moisture during the winter in this garage. There is no floor drain, etc.

The floor is pretty level except for a couple of spots.

I have checked into an outfit to come do epoxy but they are pricing out over $2200

That said, wondering what options I may have with a limited budget.

I can get a floor grinder but I have no idea what products would be needed to fix / level the flaws in the floor.

Are there other alternative such as racedeck but is there a knock off race deck that is more affordable?

Garage is 23x23

We have several garage floor tiles we could do in your price range. I could do the ribbed tile for $2.50 a square foot. Here is a recent project http://www.garageflooringllc.com/2016/03/15/truelock-hd-ribbed/ I also have an inexpensive diamond tile (American Made) on sale for $2 / Sq. Ft and two really good HD garage floor tiles for $2.39

You could definitely do coatings in that price range as well.

I have a High School graduation coming up in May and the garage is the back up location in case of bad weather.

I can sit here and tell you its durable but this video did a really good job and we have tons of testimonials just like it

If you go with a solid tile, use an inexpensive landscape fabric under it. I have to say the ribbed tile is awesome for winter weather and eliminates concerns about moisture and noise.

Unless the floor is real bad I would not do to much prep. Granted if you ahve a real high spot.... But otherwise the tiles are designed to go over pitted floors, etc.

Justin,

How durable is the inexpensive diamond tile ? I do park two SUVs in the garage mainly during the winter months... During summer usually only one.

I don't normally have any heavy equipment in the garage but do have a floor jack and jack stands.

My concerns with the tiles are the noise with out a underlayment and moisture/mold underneath. the other is that the garage is really two slabs of concrete so there is a line of unevenness between the two.

My thought was if I were to go with a tile I would need to:

1. floor grind the high spots.
2. level the low spots
3. use some sort of underlayment to reduce noise clatter

I'd like to see some examples if possible.

I really do want the least expensive option but I also understand you get what you pay for too, etc.

Let me know as I need to get this all handled next month.

Is that price for all one color or can I do a checkerboard grey/black? Color makes no difference. We sell by the tile so you get what you want.

Do you have a designer tool if that price would cover other colors? Here is the designer but it does not reflect sale price http://www.garageflooringllc.com/tile-flooring-designer/

Is there any warranty on the diamond tile? Yes, 5 year manufacturer defects.

We would recommend our Armorclad System which with the GJ discount for our best 3 layer system with primer and Military Grade 2 part topcoat runs about $1.00/sq ft.

do you have any premade designs, etc.. I am not the greatest designer. If I am going to lay down over $1k I want it to stand out rather than being just one color.

Also, if I were to order this week when does the order ship out and where from?

I like using a different color around the edges. Perhaps something like this:

You could also do the checkers larger w/o changing what you need.

If you ordered today you would see it late next week at the lastest

I would like to comment on the "clicking" sound heard when walking across floor tiles if you do not put down some sort of underlayment to deaden the sound. I have the RaceDeck tiles but I am pretty sure these tiles will be similar. I did NOT put down any underlayment so my tiles are sitting right on the bare concrete.

So to answer your question, yes, there is a small "clicking" sound when you walk on the tiles, but I have NOT found the sound to be objectionable. In fact, I hardly even notice it. It isn't like the sound is loud or anything, it's just a small "clicking" sound and it isn't objectionable, at least to me it isn't. To some people it might be objectionable I guess, but then again, some people would complain about a free lunch.

regarding installation... where does one normally start to ensure the floor remains square?

How is trimming done and what sort of outside gap is needed?

You want to leave a 1/4 to 1/2" all around. Because your garage is relatively square.... Standing on the outside, looking in, start with the flat side of the tile to the left and facing you. Work left to right, garage door back. The only cuts you will have to make are at the right hand side and the back. I table saw, large chop saw or circular saw (blade is key you want a laminate or plastics cutting blade)

Working on a video but it won't be done in time...

This is soooo different for everyone. Some don't have it at all, most are like you where you have to listen for it and sometimes, dirty or old floors make a bit more. Landscape fabric is a cheap and easy way to prevent it.

Hi,
You may want to consider tiling as we have our solid PVC SupraTile overstock on sale now in 4.5mm in limited quantities (we have as of this writing what you need in Black Coin Pattern). These are first quality tiles that may have slight shade differences due to different batch/lot numbers (not really noticeable once they get used and a tad dirty).

See www.supratile.com. Also SupraTile, since it is solid and not hollow polypropylene, does not ever 'click' or make any noise when walking on them, and requires no underlayments.

Special blow out price $1.25/sq ft. Shipping to MN $225.00. Please call for info/to order.

Might be different if the shipping cost was not a third of what I would be buying.

Justin,

What other options are there other than the tiles.. I presume it is only the epoxy.

My wife shot down the $1k for tiles... so I need to find an alternative solution at a lower cost. Again, my short term goal is just to clean it up for the upcoming graduation.

My concern with painting or epoxy is I need to grind it and the remaining cracks, spalling and repair areas will need to be filled in but I am not sure what product to use.

We have plenty of options. Rust Bullet would be a good savings as would TLPPC. You should give us a call and we can walk through them.
