So I have tons of sockets but they are a huge mismatched set. Id like to get one brand of sockets and 1/4", 3/8", 1/2". Does anyone know of a decent set that its HUGE on price? I seen the Sears set that was $299 but its a little bit more now and it seems people are breaking them??? Also the finish is poor too, as reported.

It doesnt matter to me, but a chrome finish may last longer rust wise. I will be working on diesel trucks and will most likely have to get the impact out.

Thanks !

Wait till craftsman has a sale on their 309 piece set, I got mine for $200 on a New Year's Day sale awhile back but have seen it on other big sale days as well. The set has every normal size and even some 12 point stuff. Great value for the money. Tekton is also pretty cheap for what it is.

It's kind of a hard question to answer.

What's a complete set. To me that's a whole lot of sockets and would include up to 1 3/4" in the half inch stuff. To 1" in the 3/8 stuff. I think that's more than most.

Are you looking for standard or metric. Deep and standard depth? Extensions? U joints?

I would recommend getting impact sockets for your matched set. Be a little careful with them and they will last a very very long time.

I have broken a whole lot of chrome sockets. Mostly while using them on an impact. And really, a good cordless impact should be on everyone's list of wants

Yeah I should've been more specific. I really dont know what sizes Id need. I have tons of sockets at work, all snap-on but I work on loco's. So I make money with those tools, and they stay at work. For home, I dont need the best just something decent.

I honestly dont know what size I should go up on. I know 6pt is nice but 12pt is nice too. Although 6pt gives better fastener grip... Id like shallow and deep.

Do you think they can handle occasional impact use? What about their warranty exchanges, how do they work?

Maybe for impacts, I should get some Tekton ones to fulfill that... Or maybe just get Tekton impacts and disregard the GW sets.

Second vote for Grey Pneumatic. They come in nice cases too.

1281 is just 3/8 drives but it's alot of sockets and larger than normal sizes too.

For impacts...

Sunex will get the job done with fewer skips...

Price isn't too bad...

Amazon is the place...

you work on locomotives! You lucky *******! I toured the juniata loco shops in Altoona pa back in 1996. It was way kool! I'm a EMD fan but it seems GE dominates now!

They are cool until you do it all day long lol.

Like I said, I use snap on at work as we have a truck etc.

And I'm working 2"+ stuff impact wise. But I'm not sure what's needed/will work for smaller stuff at-home. I used to being tools from work to home, but I'm done with that too

Got a link for these 1/2" drive sets up to 1 3/4" (shallow and deep of course)? I'm coming up empty on my searching.

Second on the Gearwrench. Got all 3 sets in cases, metric and standard, shallow and deep with the 120xp ratchets for about $350

If you don't mind spending a little more, the Grey Pneumatic Duo Sockets are pretty nice. Rated for impact use and thin like chrome.

Otherwise Gearwrench and Sunex/GP would probably have you covered. If I hadn't bought one of the last USA socket sets (with the dull chrome finish, of course) from Sears, I would've gone with Gearwrench.

Toptul is damn nice. I wanted a complete set in the worst way when i was first looking, but it turned out to be highly impracticable to get all the sizes here in north america

You will never find a set that goes that big. I don't even have all of them yet. In shallow 1/2 drive most of my big ones are hilti. They are spendy and I rarely use them. But I don't have 3/4 impact yet.

Plus my comment was more to show he needed to be more specific. Than to give an exact range of commonly available sockets

I'm thinking about getting these possibly. Then I won't need chrome and impact.

I really don't need the 1/4" stuff in impact seems crazy. Most 1/4" you can break by hand

I'm not a pro, but I recently upgraded my socket collection in my home box. I bought these two sets from Tekton on Amazon, which covered me with 1/4 and 3/8 drive, shallow and deep, SAE and metric, all for around $90. The ratchets that come with them are decent.

Tekton 13001 1/4 set - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RCYX504/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Tekton 13101 3/8 set - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RCYX504/?tag=atomicindus08-20

For 1/2" drive i bought the Pittsburgh PRO impact sets from Harbor Freight. I already had the metric shallow set for a few years, and It's held up great. I added metric deep, and SAE shallow. I already had a full set left of SAE deep, but they're seldom used, and I haven't upgraded them yet.

I'm thinking of buying one, with my discount the price should be really good, and it looks like it'd cover everything I need sockets for. Would help un-clutter the mixed brands in my socket drawer too

Its a nice set to have, Every time I grab it I have 98% of the sockets i need.

Trying to remember off the top on my head but I know I did buy 18/21/22 and 24mm sockets to add to this set. I think all in 3/8. There was a couple times I was using my mini 3/8 gun and with the 3/8-1/2 adapter plus the socket it was to long so I bought those sizes in 3/8.

Seems like a lot of sets miss 18mm, I have a few different sets that I use at work, and they all miss 18mm. Had to add it because it's a popular size for our MHE...
