Started my new shed floor with epoxy

Concrete & shed (9m X 7m X 2.7m high) went down in June 2015 but since the block is in a new area and full of dust decided to hold off putting down a coating. Now that we've moved in and other houses are around I took the plunge and purchased my coating system to apply this Easter long weekend. In my previous place I had good success with Sigma Coatings which is now owned by PPG. Went with their Sigmacover 456 (colour is Merino, AS Y56), Rust-oleum RockSolid tan flakes (from the hardware store) & Amershield Clear as the final clear coat. Spent yesterday all day clearing out shed followed by acid etching floor. Had to do it twice as it was power troweled and extremely smooth. I only stored some landscaping equipment in there so the floor was only dirty from mud, etc., no oil stains.
After etching and cleaned:

Primer coating products:

Primer coat (Thinners @ 10%) went down this afternoon. Unfortunately the concrete soaked it up and had to use my second coat supply which means I don't have enough to finish this weekend.
Primer coat:

Will have to wait till Tuesday when the paint supply store opens on Tuesday due to Easter weekend.
Plan on completing 2nd coat Tuesday afternoon followed by the flakes. Going to put the flakes on high as I like the look. Probably do 5 boxes for the 63sqm. I'm tossing up whether to put 1 or 2 clear coats as the tech data sheet only has 1.

Good looking shed Jon! The floor will really make the place pop once it's finished. What color flakes are you going with? I think once the flakes are down you will have a better idea if you need a second clear coat.

Yes, it will be a judgement call on 1 or 2 clear coats. I have enough for 1 coat at moment. I have a ~12 hour recoat time for the Amershield Clear. Flakes are called 'Tan', which is a mixture of tans, white & black. It won't be 100% coverage but hopefully higher than normal flake coatings.

Also, anyone have any suggestions to put between concrete and wall sheeting to close gap?

Finally applied the second coat & flakes! Didn't have any left over epoxy. We literally ran out right at the access door!



Throwing those flakes is a bit of an art form, but I think it turned out well.
Will put the clear Polyurethane Coating on tomorrow and make a judgement call on a second coat.

Thanks bry@n. I used the same coating (Sigmacover 456) but without flakes and clear coat in my last shed in 2006 and it still looked new when we sold in 2012. It did chalk on my 1m apron in front of roller door, but that's expected. Prior to selling I sanded and cleaned that 1m and applied 1 coat of the 456 and it had no issues adhering.

The 3 most important things about epoxy are preparation, preparation & preparation.

Ended up going with 2 poly clear coats as I had a few missed spots from the 1st coat. It now looks more consistent. The only issue I faced with this project was getting a uniform coverage of flakes/chips. Not bad for my first flake go, but hopefully I'll do better when I tackle the garage. Probably go with the same system, but a different epoxy colour. Maybe a dark brown and also include an anti-slip in the clear coat.


Next step is to install Retroseals on the floor between wall sheeting. This will stop vermin, snakes, dust, etc... from entering. Previously I used expanding foam but it didn't look tidy.

Still tossing up with applying a joint sealant. If I can find one in tan I'll probably go ahead.

Metzger and Mcquire makes hundreds of colors of joint sealers. We use their products frequently when we need a custom joint color.
