Need to get a full set of metric 1/2" deep impact sockets, and I've been watching the deal threads without much success...

I'm only interested in US brands, so what's the best deal going between SK, wright, proto, etc.?

Thanks in advance for the help GJ!

New or used?

Find a brand you want, get the set number you want (what socket set range?) and google it. A lot of different places will come. Personally, I like SK & Wright. There is also ebay which can land you new and used sets, cheaper than e-stores....including Snap On sets.

That Williams set looks like a great deal. I have a Chrome Williams set that is holding up well to date.

I recently picked up this used 10 piece Snappy set plus a 21mm shorty from a local used tool dealer for $100. Not a great deal but I will support the local guy. Still looking for a deep 21mm.

Are you looking to collect tools or use them? If you are using them I would go with either sunnex or IR impact sockets, not US made but tough as hell. http://www.amazon.com/Ingersoll-SK4M14L-2-Inch-Metric-Impact/dp/B000HGMSGQ or http://www.amazon.com/Sunex-2668-2-Inch-Master-Impact/dp/B0002SRB4S. When I first started out I purchased an IR set with the same sizes as the link and are still going strong after over twenty years used on a daily basis. The sockets I "upgraded" to SO would have to be replaced ever 18 months or so. For the most popular sizes I shelved the SO and just went back to the IR's. I'm sure the 19 and 7/8" sockets have taken off and installed 10's of thousands of lugnuts over the years and show no signs of wear.

Please don't buy them just because they're USA made...I've got every brand in my box and honestly I find myself always using the "Taiwan specials", the only USA impacts I go to all the time are some older MAC swivels which have held up extremely well .. My older very expensive USA impacts are worn to hell from maybe 4 years of use, I know they're softer but the Taiwan specials are still like new

It always amazes me when the OP specifically asks for something (in this case, USA made) and people suggest the opposite of what he wants (in this case, something foreign).

"Best Buy" is a relative term

Shop around as you'll find a pretty wide price range between SK, US Made Williams, and Proto.

I own all three brands and I like the Protos best. However, all three brands will serve you well. Consider what sizes are included in your set. I don't have any use for a deep 1/2 drive 10mm impact socket but, many sets include smaller sizes like that.

A nice sale from Zoro can get you a sweet deal on a Proto set. Tools Delivered probably has the best pricing on Williams tools. Epstein's is the sentimental favorite here for SK but without free shipping, you might be better off with tooltopia or another online vendor.

I appreciate you wanting to buy a US made brand. However, as others have pointed out, you could get Grey Pneumatic, Sunex, or NAPA Carlyle sets that will serve you well for many years at probably half the price of a US made set. Sunex has some rebates going on that expire 3/31/16.

Good luck with your quest. Post back what you end up with:beer:

I noticed the Williams sets where hit or miss on the COO deal. It seemed half where USA or not. I luv my GP's and being from canada that's close right?? :)

I also have a complete set of sunnex in 3/8" that I have no complaints at all.

It amazes me when people like you make a useless post to complain about other people making an irrelevant post.

If the op is ok with used stuff check craigslist or local pawn shops, I've been finding some crazy deals lately locally on USA made stuff and re-selling them on eBay

Fair enough. You stop suggesting things opposite what the OP posts IN THE THREAD TITLE and I wont respond. I don't mind irrelevancy, but try a little reading comprehension.

There's 10,000 threads on here about Sunex and GP sockets, and I've posted positively on a few of them. But the guy specifically said he wanted US.

I don't think there is anything wrong with informing people of all other options available to them. A Lot of people automatically assume us made tools are the best option and I agree most of the time they are, but not always. Trust me I am all for buying American, I am employed by an American manufacturing company.

Re: Best buy in US made 1/2" deep impacts?

This thread is getting derailed....all my "regular" sockets are either sk or usa craftsman. My impacts however are some 13 yr old husky deep and shallow 6pt 1/2 drive metric...i also have a set of 12pt snap on standard dept metric 1/2 drive and a whole set of 3/8 drive sunnex. I'm all for supporting american made but cant go wrong with Cr-Mo taiwanese. Best bet is check ebay and craigslist.

Williams has two different lines. The American stuff will have hypenated alpha numeric part numbers the taiwan stuff will only be numbers

Re: Best buy in US made 1/2" deep impacts?

Here's a picture I just took. What you see are snap on, craftsman USA, Proto, wright, sunex, husky, Armstrong and even Pittsburgh. Yes I generally go for the snappys first, but they all work just the same to be quite honest. I know you want USA, but sunex make some great impact sockets. They sell them on tool trucks. My tool dealer stopped selling SK impacts because sunex is all he sold.

Why so many different brands you ask? Because that brand was the Best Buy I could find when I needed that size.

Re: Best buy in US made 1/2" deep impacts?

Newbie to the forum, hi all. I'm an excavator from Poughkeepsie, NY, 43 years now who always has turned his own wrenches, both PM to full major component R+R, and everything in between. Administrator says to get post #1 out of the way so here goes-- ALWAYS have been a big proponent of only USA made tools but prefer older stock as I just feel there"s something better about them. I have Dad's old 1"--2.5" Mac wrenches that are way over 50 years old that are still like new, function wise. That said, I prefer these days to buy either new Sears USA made or used USA Sears at auction or a flea market. Don't care if something's broken or well worn, Sears has that great lifetime guarantee as I'm sure most know. Unfortunately, sometimes the replacement is Hecho in china, oh well, it's not perfect.

Any old timers here who own or know what a Swench is?

I have just about every current USA made craftsman tool because they're the same as the big name company's, but waaaayyy cheaper.

Re: Best buy in US made 1/2" deep impacts?

If you can still find some US-made Craftsmans, they're a good choice.

This. I bought a set of the metric and standard deep 1/2" impacts back in the 90s in nice plastic cases. Never an issue. USA made and I think I paid $40-$50 for them on some kind of sale.

Similar to this set, different case. Don't know if this is still USA made though:
http://www.craftsman.com/craftsman-...p-00915886000P?prdNo=5&blockNo=5&blockType=G5 For $45, worth a look!

Re: Best buy in US made 1/2" deep impacts?

I have impacts from SK, Snap-On, Craftsman, Matco, and Mac. The USA Craftsman are(were) identical to Armstrong and without question the best value. SK deep/shallow sets are also a really good buy and have held up very well. No problems with the truck brands, buy not sure my $200 set of Matco's are 2x as good as their $90 SK equivalent.

If you're patient and willing, you can get awesome deals on Armstrong impact sockets on eBay. I've been buying brand new sockets for $5-10 shipped

EDIT: just picked up a brand new set of Proto SAE Deep in 3/8 DR for $28 shipped on ebay. Industrial brands are the way to go if you're looking for a deal and don't need truck service.
