What size wire?

So the more i read on the subject the more i get confused. I have a 30x35 pole barn that needs electric run to it. I have 200 amp service to the house and am planning on running 100 amp to the pole barn. I figure the run to be right around the 100 ft mark. Sounds like the best bet is to run aluminum wire between the house and the sub panel in the garage. Am i ok using 1/0-1/0-1/0-2 Aluminum SER Wire? The run will be underground. Is it ok to use this as long as it is conduit? I also leaning on using a 200 amp breaker box in the pole barn for the added spaces. Do both panels need to be the 100amp breaker or only the house and 200amp in the pole barn? The barn will be used primary for auto work and what not. Future plans call for heat\ac, four post lift, 2 garage door openers, and possibly a welder.
Thanks in advance:beer:

You could probably get away with using a 90A breaker, then you can use AL 2-2-2-4 MHF.

You can't run SER underground, regardless if it is in conduit or not.

Only issue with MHF is that it needs to be in conduit inside.

You can use a 200A panel as the sub, as long as you have the correct breaker size feeding it..

So I could run 2-2-2-4 mhf with a 90a breaker at the house and direct bury it and run it thru conduit when it is inside correct?

Side note, if I plan on running cat 5 also can it be in the same conduit or should it be separate?

On the end of the run where the wire will enter the house, is there any requirement on how high the conduit has to come up before entering the home?

I plan on using the 2-2-2-4 mhf for my run as well.
I just can't figure out why everyone around here just uses
2-2-4 urd and direct buries it. Is the 4 a neutral wire?

No. It could even enter underground if needed, provided the foundation penetration were sealed properly.

Charles

thanks! Almost got all my duck in a row and that much closer to making the run. Picked up the wire and conduit today.

Three gotchas:

#1-It rains in Ohio, make the hole in the house above grade & use sealant.

#2-you need to protect the conduit form weedeaters when it comes out of the ground. NEC says at least schedule 80 PVC(basically double thick). It might sound hackish, but I like to sleeve the PVC stub up in steel and paint it to match the house.

#3-lay your communication conduit at least 12" away from the power one. Low voltage comms don't have a minimum bury depth, so you can just bury it 1ft shallower than the power conduit.

URD is not permitted to be ran inside structures because the insulation is only rated USE-2 which isn't flame resistant.

Yes the #4 is a neutral but that wire doesnt have a 4th wire for an EGC. For a subfeed off a main service panel u need a 4-wire feeder so 3 conductor anything wont work.

#1. The plan is to enter the house above grade was just checking to see if there was a requirement on height

#2. I've bought schedule 80 but do like your idea here also [emoji1303]

#3. That's also the plan, just higher up in the same trench

Thanks for the feedback
