Snap on fixer upper toolbox, whats it worth?

Found this on craigslist and its fairly local, I'm always looking for another project, figure I could restore this box and gain some more storage. Fix the damage, repaint. Would this box be ball bearing slides or friction? Since you guys are the experts, what's it worth in this condition. Thanks!

From the pics, the box isn't terrible considering its age. I'd just use it but that's me. $500 is a fair price if the drawers all work well. Pull each one out completely 2 or 3 times to check for binding and smoothness. Also, restoring the box will be very time consuming and won't increase its value enough to justify the time but if you enjoying doing it, thats justifcation enough. Let us know if you get it.

From the looks of it, I'd say it's well worth $500, granted, like fatfillup said, the drawers work well. Since you're asking what kind of slides are on there, then I'm assuming you haven't seen it in person. I'd guess that setup has ball bearing slides, it looks like early '90s. When you go look at it, check the stamping on the back of both boxes to find the year manufactured.

If the paint is decent, I'd just peel the stickers off and use it as is. From the pictures, it doesn't look bad, just regular wear and tear from being used for several years.

Nobody will give him close to $1400...esp. in this economy.

The aluminum, box edge and drawer, trims are readily available and are not expensive. If you are going to repaint the box the dents and scratches are easily fixed. I think it is a time vs. money call. If you have more time then money, fix it. If you have more money then time, look for one done!

It has friction slide drawers.

I bought the same lower box in a little worse condition (along with a matching side box not sure of model, and a KR555 really rough) for $650. But I got a big set of Snap on punches, hex wrenches, and deep drawer full of snap on and channel lock pliers along with it. I'm super happy with the price I paid, I just didn't expect the time it would take to get things cleaned up.

I would figure if I were selling, I would think $500 is fair and all I would expect to get. I sold a similar one in better shape and it took a while and I got $670

That's my most favorite roll cab/top chest combination Snap-on ever made. That trim piece and drawer can be replaced with new replacements.

IMO that is a very good toolbox set; especially when compared to some of the thin metal stuff made nowadays.

Just needs a few dents hammered out, some goo gone treatment to remove the stickers and some detail work on the paintjob and I'd bet it will clean up real good. 3 to 4 hours detailing that thing and most will never know thats its the same boxes you originally posted.

I can see how some dents can be fixed, like the ones on the bottom, but the dents in the drawers look difficult to fix.

How much would the aluminum trim piece on the edge of the rollaway cost to replace?

I purchased that box in the early 90's. It was my first brand new box. I paid some where in the neighborhood of 3800.00.

It was all ball bearing slides.

All that damage is only cosmetic and can all be repaired easily.

Make the guy and offer. If he dont take it. Walk away.

I have that as my current box! Mine has friction slides. If that one has roller slides I'd be all over that one. It has tons of storage.

If I were in the market, most def. I'd be looking for roller slides.

I'd pay $300 for it and run it as is, but like I said its not worth more than that to me as its not really what I want. For the right price, however, I could compromise

I have the same top box(KR650) at work. Mine has friction slides. I'd like it a bit better if it had ball bearing slides. Other than that its a good box. I'd say $500 would be a deal on it if the drawers are all in good working order. I'd give $750 for it if it was a ball bearing box. If your really after a good box and its a ball bearing $850 to $900 still wouldn't be to bad.

I think $850 is a lot for those boxes in that condition with friction slides. Offer $550 and see what he says. I don't see him getting more than $600 for it to be honest.

I saw that same top for sale earlier this year around here. The pictures looked really good. I don't know if the slides were ball bearing or friction, but he was asking $350 for it.

500 it has damage, if it did have ball bearing slides I would offer significantly less as most who own BB slide have not a clue as to how to take care of them they require lots of service and offer zero advantage. ( high quality friction slides are cheap to replace, hold more weigh and offer more rigidity)

Interesting...you're the first person I've read on here that actually PREFERS friction slides to BB ones. I've never had a problem with friction slides so I can usually get friction slide boxes at a fairly good price b/c a lot of people won't even consider a box if it has friction slides.

How are you supposed to properly care for ball bearing slides?

Isn't the advantage of them that they slide easier and theoretically you can put more weight in drawers with them over friction slides?
