honza: Nice shop and great vises. I'm curious though. All that empty square footage on your nicely built bench - is that what is known as a "benchtop"? I think my bench had one once but I haven't seen it for awhile.

The picture is taken short after I built the workbench, about 3 weeks ago.

Yost is my guess. Reeds, athols, and rock islands have the writing oN the opposite side.

Good call Bagged!
I checked a few vises down in the basement and saw that the Reed, the Athol, and the Rock Island have most of the writing on the "opposite" side just like you say. My Prentiss vises have writing on the same side as Charger's mystery vise, but the profiles are different so the mystery vise can't be a Prentiss.

Yea but you never know. There are always oddball vises. I'm not convinced I'm right either.

What we can see of the lettering seems to me a bit different, but the profile is so close to this Yost I found on google images that I believe Bagged got it right.

DRIVES had noted the sculptured wings on the jaws of the mystery vise, and the Yost does not have them. And the shroud over the spindle head is much thicker on the Yost vise. Could still be an oddball brand made for a local hardware store, which was very popular many years ago.

We are talking about Chargers vise right?

There are marking on the near side. Its just too dim/Grainy to tell what; A little light on the subject:

Yup.
I call Rock Island because of the profile and the fatness of the hub.

And some old Rock Islands did have the writing on the "wrong side" as well as the sculpted wings on the jaws, like my No.6 Automatic.

Would anyone here have an old ad with Charles Parker 995?

I have a Columbian with the sculpted wings, but the writing is on the wrong side, the "shroud" is not curved on the bottom above the screw head - its flat, and the handle "buttons" are different; head of the screw is also a cylinder not a ball...

What was the make on that huge vise that had the sculpted wings a few weeks ago?

First off... whew... went through page 1 through 4 twice before I found the vise post... Scared to death it was deleted.

Alright fellers... what do we have here what do we have here.

Seller claims its probably a 4 1/2 to 5" jaws... no repairs but I can't tell exactly what make or model it is.

I am going down there tomorrow to pick it up... Just curious on what I'm going to get... he is holding it for me

So end all this speculation! it's tomorrow already!

I picked up a Henry vise today. A no. 5. Its going to need the wire wheel treatment. I was wondering if this was originally a swivel base? or would it be machined alot more on the bottom.. The bottom of the vice says Craftools, London and a number 5, seems it was originally red. which is what color i will repaint it. I love picking up these canadian made vises. now i need to make a sturdy shelf to support all my finished vises... on a side note.. i have a Yost 104 1/2 soaking in SG rite now.. i was able to fit the whole slide into my 5 gallon bucket. and there is lots of rust on the exposed surface.. will this clean off with break cleaner? or should i figure out some way to do a full Evaporust soak too?.. heres some pictures i took tonite

Z3, that has the classic Record/Paramo/Woden Lines so probably fixed; however, all three companies made bolt on swivel bases for their fixed base vises.

My Record No. 23.

Picked up a few years ago from Nottingham for £20. It had been sat out side and was as rusty as buggery and the mechanism was very stiff.

A good brush out and grease was all it needed.

Flying: nice looking old Record. just curious since you mounted the vise in your bench a little too far for vertical pieces don't you ever need to use it that way? a lot of guys mount their vise that way, but if it's possible I usually try to mount mine so that the static edge is just hanging over the edge. another member lines his vise up like this with a metal ruler in it's jaws so he knows where the edge is before drilling into his nice bench.

welcome to the forum and the vise thread

ALL: I went on a 18 hour road trip yesterday and only picked up a couple parts vises, but I met with a couple GJ members and we swapped a couple vises. I got back my XY table that Jeremy had made some great jaws for that he'd been using (holding for me) for a couple years and he needed a big vise for his welding table and some cash.

also Riley and I had a small trade, but he was kind enough to give me a little tour of his big steel company's machine shop. I barely got in the door when I could have touched several huge Kurt machinist vises and some huge lathes and machines.

thanks guys

Drivesitfar She's a beauty, its amazing how some tools are just a must. I never looked back after upgrading from a small rubbish one.

It was mounted originally in that position to save space and for it to be one less thing to injured on! When I get round to re-modelling the bench I'll consider moving it closer to the edge for the reasons you mention.

Thanks for the welcome :)

Well I got the vise in my posseision....

If you said the vise was an Athol... you were wrong
If you said the vise was a Sawyer... you were wrong
If you said the vise was a Yost... you were wrong

But IF you said it was a Rock Island (which a few did) then you were most certainly correct!!!

Just had enough time last night to take some pictures... it has quite a bit of gunk built up on it but open and closes pretty good. 4" jaws model 73

Charger: thanks for posting the BAD I mean GOOD NEWS. looks like a nice old Rock Island and my vote is for BLO.

congrats

Flying: sounds good and while you are making that bench you might want to find another vise for the other end of it like a Quick Release Parkinson or Record or maybe you'll get lucky and find some good old pre WWII USA made one.

good luck

My entry in the guessing game was incorrect, (yost)
But I did learn that companies were not consistent with the side the makers marks were cast...port or starboard.
That's what's so great about this forum...learn something almost every day!
