Is it on impulse? Constantly because you love them and can't help yourself? Only when you are planning to do or are in the middle of a job and find that you need a certain tool?

I go in spurts. The only thing that stops me from being something every day is the fact that I am not rich.

For the past few weeks, I've been searching eBay ******** for wrenches...a nice offset box set, for example since I don't have a full set of those, just a few Frankensteins. Then I decided to buy a matched set of metric combo wrenches, since I have a pieced together mismatched set. Hopefully I will stop myself before it is too late since the mismatched wrenches work just fine and there are other things to spend my limited money on!!

But oh, would a nice shiny set of matched Bonneys or Armstrongs or Protos or SK Superchromes be nice :drool:

Bull, sometimes I get mad at myself. I bought a set of 7 thru 19 mm, 3/8 drive, 12pt. shallow sockets last week. I could have bought Cman, but no, they were staring at me in the blue steel tray, like the money I could be saving at Geico, and I had to have them............................next thing you know I will need Cornwell extensions to eclipse my Cman ones, etc..etc.... argh!

All those tools on the truck, the sensory overload........................can't look and not buy anything

Usually I buy a tool only when I need it or will plan on needing it real soon. Sometimes though on occation when either at a harware store, tool store, or online, if I see a special tool I will buy it for no other reason than it's something that will likely come in handy in the future.

I'll buy tools that I would of liked to have on previous jobs when I find them for the right price, Misc tools at the right price on impulse and even once in a while tools I just have to have because either the job requires it or I really really really like it.

Examples
Bought an air nibbler because I found a CP one for $20 and I would of really liked to have one a while back.
Bought a Airco Super Hornet (Miller Big 40 rebadge) engine driven 300amp water cooled welder because I found one for $200
This last category I dont run into that much anymore but it would probably be some Norseman 1/8" drill bits because the bit I had on hand sucked for the material I was drilling.

I'll buy them if I see a good sale, good deal on Craigslist, or happen to go to a pawn shop I frequent. If I haven't bought something in a while, I'll probably be craving a "fix"! :pimpflash

really who needs a real reason? My biggest problem right now is buying duplicate stuff..... i seem to get really irritated when i'm working on something at home and the perfect tool for the job is locked in my box locked inside a shop i can't get into. Sometimes i can wait, sometimes i go out and buy a second version of something i all ready have. I figure this is probably a better solution than quitting my job just to horde all my tools at home where i have 24/7 access to them.

That's why I won't work for any shop I don't have keys to.When I'm doing a side job on the weekend I sometimes need something from my work box and I hate having to go buy some crappy duplicate tool when a professional version is already in my work box. That said I'll usually try to find a good version of the tool at a decent price later to keep in the home box.

tough question as it varies upon the circumstances at the time.

sometimes when I find a killer deal on something I dont have I will buy it. sometimes if its a killer deal and I already have one I will buy it anyway.

when I am trying to get a job done and need a tool for that jop, I will buy it if the tool costs less than paying to have it done. sometimes if the tool costs more but I think I will use the tool again I will buy it verses paying someone.

Im fairly new as a tech. For a few months I was just buying a ton of stuff that I needed for everyday jobs I do. Since then Ive settled down a little. I bought a KRL1022 thats eating most of what used to be my tool budget, so I only buy what I can either get a crazy good deal on or I absolutely need. A good example would be the SHLF80 I just got off the truck last week for $60. My dealer gives really good trade in prices if I play the whole, "I dont know......" card. :bounce:

Ive got my eye on some Instinct screwdrivers and few wrenches once I get my MAC truck paid off in a few weeks. Or maybe that should go towards groceries?

Nah...

I don't use my own tools to make a living anymore so most of the stuff I need I already have. Mainly what I buy now is stuff that is a real good deal and old tools that I collect.
