Between 485 & 705 SQ/FT BJ383SS's Woodshop/Garage

Well today I started the slippery slope of building my dust collection piping. Started with the bandsaw as it is near the end of the branch I am buiding. Made the couplings to pair the 4" hose with the 4" PVC pipe by cutting a 13/16" slot in a 3.5" piece of PVC to join the two. Then I realized I needed to build some blast gates. So I got one built and then by that time it was the end of my day.

I will be leaving my current dust collection in place which is the 2.25" box you see in the top of the photo. I will still use my Ridgid vac to cleanup around the shop and to pull dust collection off of the router table. After the piping for the DC is all done I will tidy up all the extension cords.

Pieces to make a blast gate. I hot glued them in for the moment in case I want to redo them. I just found a different way of making them where one side has a coupling used that fits the 4" pipe. May try one of those. I also need to pickup some more pipe and some 45* elbows.

I cut the holes in the plates on my lathe as my little drill press will not run a 4" holesaw.

Still working on the DC piping. It is very tedious and time consuming. I got the jointer piping fitted today. It just needs a blast gate. Spent several hours trying to figure out how to enclose the bottom of my tablesaw. After 2 failed attempts I came up with something very simple. I was initially trying to make a sloped box with a fitting at the back bottom where gravity would help move the dust down to the piping. There are so many angles and bolts sticking out from all sides on the inside of the base that I eventually just fitted a 1/4" piece of plywood to the bottom and screwed it into the saw base with sheet metal screws and put a 4" fitting right below the blade housing. Sealed all the edges with duck tape and called it a day. Tried it out and it captured 95% of the dust. None on the floor just a little inside the box. That will get better once I close in the back and seal up all the air gaps around the top and make it air tight.

2 covers I made for the back. I will have to remove them if I have to make beveled cuts but I rarely do that. That's what the chop saw is for.

Piping going to the jointer. The open end will feed to the tablesaw. Then I just have to connect the line to the Thein baffle barrel and connect that to the DC. The barrel needs 4" fittings fit to it. Still need to run piping up to the lathe and sander and over to the chopsaw and drill press but that will come later.

Thanks Herb. That was one of the selling points with the wife was her car would not get covered in fine dust if I had a real dust collection system. Hopefully I will get it finished up tonight and tomorrow I have quite a few projects for around the house stacking up that require the tablesaw.

I like your miter station. Close ups of it and the red pegboard cabinets above would be appreciated.

I still don't see a spot for the Olds.

I'm not too sure where you are finding the time for all the custom DC work with all the stuff that goes along with unpacking and getting settled in the main part of the house.

13 straight days off from work helped a lot. Plus I had to get the shop up and running so I could complete some honey-doos for the wife.

Along all the other projects going on I am in research for a 10 x 12 metal storage building that will fit within the constraints of my HOA. I have one picked out I think. Just need to go buy it, get it put up and fill it with all the junk I don't want to get rid of. I still have another load or two from the big garage to bring over.

Next phase after that will be moving all of my stuff including the 64' from the big garage to my garage. Time to check out from there...

Thanks for stopping by. I have managed to get most of the shop setup. However I ditched the steel storage building idea and decided to build my own from scratch. It has got way out of hand as I am building the biggest building my HOA will allow. A 12x18 with a partition at the 10 mark so that the front 12 x10 will be an additional workshop and the back 8x12 for actual storage. I need a place to do dirty work like painting, and bodywork for the 64'. The big garage is going to mostly be divided into the 3rd bay the woodworking area and the 2 car part the Automotive area. But I don't want to do any real dirty work in there hence the idea for the shed.

I have one side of the 2 car garage staging all the shelving and stuff that needs to go into the storage part of the shed so the garage is a bit of a mess. I did finish my DC for the time being. Still need to run a line to my lathe and OSS sander. Since I will be bringing the 64' home I had to change the layout of the 2 car side. I moved the Miter/chop saw/drill press workbench to the wall right below the lumber rack. Makes more sense here anyways. I moved the cyclone barrel and will hookup my Ridgid vac to this that I had out at the big garage to the miter saw and drill press. I still need to make a hinged pegboard to cover up the Electrical box. Also paint all the pegboard the same color as the wall.

I moved the new cabinets and workbench I just made for the big garage and installed them where the miter station was. This will all be automotive tools and supplies.

Used my Dad's GMC to bring home the first round of supplies for the shed. It took 2 loads.

I'll try and take some pics of the finished DC for you. I had to rearrange my tools somewhat to make the lines as short as possible. The Grizzly DC works so well I didn't even bother trying to hookup the cyclone barrel I had hooked to the vacumn. The only tool that still makes a little bit of a mess is the tablesaw. It comes from the top of the table. The blade spits stuff out. I need to make an overhead shark guard dust collection hookup down the road.

GB that is exactly what it is. I had to submit my project to the Architectural Committee. They just ensure that everyone builds within the guidelines. Such as painting the same color as your house and using the same building materials like shingles and siding.

Since I moved my mechanics toolbox to the Automotive side of the garage I have more space on my countertop and will build another bank of drawers where the roll cabinet was. I also temporarily moved all my hammers here since the orange pegboard cabinet came down. It will be moving to the shed. Still have a gap between the 2 countertops I need to make and install.

View from the jointer. Still getting use to this corner of the workbench it is way different than I had before. After the shed is built I may move the jointer out to the shed. I don't normally use it on a regular basis that much. Just mainly when I am preparing wood for a new project.

Main DC hookup. Sort of an ugly mess but it is functional. I am sure I will change this around in the future but it works for now. The very bottom hookup with the plug in it is were I hookup my Planer. I tried the DC out on the Planer and it worked perfectly. No dust at all came out of it I was very impressed. Even with the completely wrong direction bend on the hookup part it still worked perfectly.

Thanks Herb. Helped my Grandpa and Dad many of time putting up buildings but this the first one on my own.

I am using Hardie board for all the trim and the 8.25in x 12ft Hardie siding as well. I want to put 2-3 coats of paint on it and not worry about for a long time.

2 small 18x24in windows. It will be divided into a 12x10ft workshop in the front and a 8x12ft storage in the back part. Will have double doors with Hardie siding as well.

Going to run some electrical for lights and a few power tools.

So I had 4 days off and here is where I am at.

Thanks Dennis. Yes the Hardie board is adding considerable cost but as you said it should last forever and it holds paint very well. So hopefully I won't be doing much maintenance on it for a long time.

Today I got the House wrap on. Put the soffit boards on. Windows installed, and the ridge vent installed as well.

Started getting the inside ready for insulation and OSB.

So what I have left:
siding and trim
couple of coats of paint on everything
build a ramp for the door
Build the doors
insulate the walls and ceiling
hang osb inside
run electrical from main box
install electrical outlets and lights

I now share it with a "small" woodshop and storage for my zero turn mower. If you are disciplined with your storage and shop space you will be ok though.

So I finally got all the insulation installed. I am so glad to be done with that. Had a couple of cool days so wearing all the protection gear wasn't that bad plus I brought home my big *** fan I had at the big garage.

This morning my dad helped me and when made a run to Lowes and got all the OSB to finish the inside with and some trim and siding. After that we made two runs to the big garage. About the only things left out there now is some lumber, the truck its self and the rear fenders, plus some of the bed parts.

Every time I bring loads home I try to get everything organized and put away and then just fill it all back up. With the shed almost done a lot of this will be moving out there. My dad also informed the engine stand that my grandpa made comes apart. So I will be taking it apart so it will be easier to store.

Relieved to get the Air Compressor home with no damage. I was a little concerned with it riding home. But we mounted it inside of a wooden pallet rack and then secured it with 4 ratchet tie downs. Man this thing is a lot heavier than I thought and my dad and I struggled to get it in the truck. But it is now in its new home and safe. Now just need to run some juice to it and set my air line system up. Another project for the list.
