The pair sold for $238, not bad if you live in the area, but like BurgerK stated, 8 hours round trip and about $150 for gas would sour that deal for me also.

Help an old guy out gentlemen. A vintage Craftsman 5188C, made in Japan, just appeared in an on-line auction. It's new in the factory box. What's the upper limit that I should bid?

As far as I know it's ductile iron. I was gonna drill a small hole at each end to stop further cracking then "v" it in preparation for brazing. From what I gather, it's detrimental to weld it. Where welding actually melts the base metal and the welding rod/wire, brazing doesn't get the base metal hot enough to change its properties. It only melts the filler rod.

Edit: when I do this, I'll try to take pics and post in the repair thread.

BF: that old Craftsman vise new in the box might be worth more than a Benjamin because the restored ones sell for that and upward. your call on a collector's value, but I think you should be ok even paying a little more because the value should only go up especially if Sears closes their stores like everybody is talking about.

FR: hard to see some of those cracks isn't it especially when you've driven or hoped the vise was going to be in great shape. if you know how to braze or know a friend that does that vise can be repaired. or it might even work as it is for many years. if you plan to use it you might want to drill a small hole at the end of the crack to stop it from cracking any more.

ALL: met another very handy guy a couple days ago with some amazing wood and steel tools and his go to vise was the double swiveling CHINESE WONDER VISE so even though those might be full of bondo and cheaply made I still have yet to meet a person that doesn't love theirs and use it a lot. i'm a little disappointed i didn't mount my Taiwan version and keep it, but i know the kid i sold it to loves it so happy it at least has a good home now.

I finished with the Yost 104 1/2 i picked up a couple weeks ago. I peeled the masking tape around the fixed jaws only to realize i must of been sleeping when i masked them. Oh well. Im looking into getting a sandblaster in the next few weeks. so i will probably do this one all over again. Need to work on my painting skills too and make sure i get all the angles. you can see where some spots are light. I also think when i redo it. I will keep the knob on the handle bare metal . EDIT - Taking out the handle tomorrow and wire wheeling it. cant stand the low paint spots

Picked up this bench over the weekend for $60 I like it easy to keep clean not as long as I would like but does the job for now.

Chilang: earlier today I was describing that vise as the GREAT CHINESE WONDER VISE that double or triple swivels. yours could still be made in China, but it looks like it's better made and probably Taiwan version. it's not a US made or English made one though so price/value isn't real high. that said it might be one of the most used vises in the country that most if not all users love to use. if it's reasonable and you can use a go to vise on the tougher jobs you don't want to take a change damaging your nicer vises I'd say buy it.

Also sometimes (most of the time?) that great looking finish is filler over what could be an incredibly rough casting. (one guy tried to "restore" one of those, and the casting surface... Well think the dark side of the moon...)

I picked up this RAE No. 4 1/2 today for 40 bucks. jaws are excellent. i already had 3 RAE vises and havent seen the logo cast with one large letter then 2 small letters.. Would it be safe to assume this is an earlier RAE vise. Non of the RAE's i already had. have a knob on the handle like this one.. and its a big nob! look forward to finishing this up

Can anyone tell me what make this vise is. I can only get two pictures off the seller. and she is very slow to communicate back to me. I was hoping to identify this before i make an hour drive to take a look.

Picked up this Wilton combination C0 bullet vise today for $30. No pipe jaws but has the swivel base. All works good. Date code has rusted off.

Needs freeing up and a new pin for the jaw but otherwise not bad. I am leaving again today so it will be a few weeks before I can get to it.

Thanks. That is what I was leaning towards based on LOTS of pictures and posts. The pin will be easy, it is wood. Just need a new one. Ideally it would be turned on my own lathe that I still don't have. So I guess I will be calling in favors.

Craptain, you can make them on a grinder if you are a mind to.---Made all these on my grinder.---Takes a little time and patience and a crick in the neck, but they work like a charm.:thumbup:

I made the Rock Island pin a bit too long, but it was my first endeavor.:dunno:
