Tools in Romania

Hey all. I'm currently stationed in Romania and finally made it to a proper Tool Store.

The Romanian version of Home Depot or Lowes is called Dedemon. It is very similar in layout and selection to what I'm used to back home. Of course it's all Romanian and/or European brands.

Bosch seemed to make of the majority of the power tools but there was an impressive showing of Black and Decker as well as a couple Milwaukee and Makita.

Unfortunately I didn't take too many photos. There were warning signs at the entrance to not take pictures or videos.

I was happy to find real NATO Jerry Cans and an actual still made for making your own liquor. I couldn't believe it. The national drink Tuica is made by all families in the country and not illegal. I wish I had gotten a picture. I think my buddy did. If I get can get it from him I'll post it.

Thanks. I love seeing tools stores from other countries. Are those Bahco made drivers in the first picture?

I don't think so. I believe the're a Romanian brand, manufactured in Brasov, Romania.

I'm going to try and go back to the store next weekend. I'd like to send a couple of those Jerry Cans back home.

They had some neat looking Bosch power tools but I wouldn't buy them since they're designed to run off 220.

I get a kick out of seeing what some of the contractors on base have in their toolbags.

Bosch does make top quality power tools and they command top dollar, even in the US. I would rank Makita or Milwaukee a close second and Black and Decker a distant third.

Well, I guess they are supposed to be water cans ...

From Wikipedia, Tuica is a fruit wine (typically plums) that is distilled to be 80-100 proof !

I don't think they're intended for water only. You wouldn't believe some of the stuff I've seen in this country that wouldn't fly in the US.

Tuica is so popular here but I can't stand it. Apparently the flavor varies depending on who distilled it but is was pretty horrible the couple of times I've tried it.

Why are they so sensitive to taking pics in the store?

I don't know why they'd hang a sign like that, especially in a home improvement store where people need to compare colors, textures, finishes, and sizes.

They might not be that strict about enforcing it but I felt a little awkward.

Next time I'll take more.

Some places are really paranoid that you're taking photos/videos as prep to either rob them after hours or pull off a major shoplifting haul.

Those stills are cool! I've been getting lots of ad's for copper stills on the facebook app on my phone. Seems odd that someone would pay to advertise stills in the US since you cant legally make your own booze.

I think you're allowed to distill your own alcohol for fuel purposes. Or maybe you want to make your own distilled water to cool electronics. Haha.

Did the Leu to USD conversion and those hand tools are priced pretty good. Those stills though are crack head pricing.

Yeah, the tools were all decent priced, just nothing I really needed or felt like carrying around the rest of the day. I either need to take the train or get a taxi to the city where Dedemon is and we had a lot of walking ahead of us.

The stills... I can't explain the pricing. My only guess is the materials involved. Some things are harder to come by in this country than others. I'm guessing 95% of people here use their own homemade, jury-rigged, prison style still rather than something off the shelf.

The same reason you see pipes used for smoking drugs available at stores.
It is what it is and YOU can do anything you want with it. It's not until YOU use it for something illegal that it becomes illegal.

Doh, didn't think of it like that. I doubt many people are smoking tobacco out of those bongs sold at the gas station. Lol

I don't think they're intended for water only.

They would be for diesel or petrol/gas. We get the same style ones here, they come in 5L, 10L and 20L sizes. Don't forget to get a spout to go with it if you buy one.
A water container would be plastic, or stainless if you have more money than sense

it's not a wine , it's a spirit, but not that strong, Palinca is 60-80% alcool but Tuica is lighter like 30%

Squid , you can buy MOB-IUS tools , they are really good , UNIOR is also good, don't worry about warranty you will not need it.

Thanks for sharing, I enjoy this stuff. Those Unior ratchets look nice. What is the pear head next to them?

Sorry, can't help you out on that one. Dedeman has a website and I used google translate to see if I could find a brand but no luck.

Next time I'm there I'll try and get more details.

Actually, I just looked it up on the ATF web site. It IS a felony to possess an illegal still. And according to them, any still is an illegal still unless you have a distillers license.

I wish that wasn't the case. I'd love to get a couple of charred oak casks and try to make my own small batch bourbon.

.......
My analogy of pipes to stills was an assumption.
Thanks for the clarification on stills.

So then, I too wonder how can people openly advertise and sell them if the above is true?
Maybe they just sell them as copper flowerpots or fancy copper water storage containers if the Feds come calling.
If the purchaser decides to do something else with them besides planting flowers or storing water, it's the purchasers problem.

An ATF sting perhaps ?

Nope, they're for fuel. The best quality ones are made by Valpro in Latvia.

I used to work next to a group of Hungarian carpenters. They had palinca that you could get pissed off just the fumes, and they drank it from mugs during the winter.

It's only illegal if you get caught..

I have a set of knuckledusters that i bought as a "paperweight". Same rules apply i assume.

Polinca seems to be really similar. Hungarian vs Romanian perhaps.

A still is only illegal when you sell the product that comes out of it for money or goods/services. It isnt the making of the product thats illega, its what you do with it afterwards. The law does state its illegal to distill liquor, but so long as you dont sell it not much will happen if its for home use. But thats a matter of discretion if one would be caught, even then how would you be unless some idiot rats you out for making your own for home use-that you were going to use for your lawnmower..
