I got a Simpson 260 7M yesterday, while picking up my new to me shop fridge. The case is broken and it had a battery in it. But it's pretty clean inside. Is it worth getting this one repaired or trash it? ae65c632ca5472e54074ff431d7077a2.jpg7deb7e3231a00898bbd1a85490605643.jpgc7fdc4f8bb20ba7cf21cf7a31d926fae.jpg7aa979a7b0e9d716901f02f74975add6.jpg

The case can be glued. The big question is, does it work?
Before delving into fixing all of the cosmetic issues, verifiy if it works or can be repaired. I would not spend much on it. You could probably find one on CL or Ebay thats in working condition fairly easily.

They are great meters. I used one in the navy for years. After I retired I bought an almost new one off ebay for around $50. There are a lot of them out there and there are many different models. If it works and you can fix the case easily, do it. Otherwise look for a better one on ebay.

And if it is broken, buy a modern Fluke DVM

There a place for both IMHO.

For some measurements I like seeing an analog needle move vs LCD segments change.

Use epoxy for that crack and clean it up and it should be fine..

I used the same analog Triplett VOM for almost 30 years on-the-job at the railroad.

IF....that Simpson 260 VOM can be repaired....'on-the-cheap'....then do it.
If NOT....buy a new VOM.

Many DVM's (like my Fluke 77) also have an analog display. I threw both of my bulky Simpson 260's away years ago

You may already be aware of this but I'll mention it anyway. Avoid putting the superglue on the broken pieces and then try to align and press the pieces together. The superglue is likely to start setting and lead to ugly, ill-fitting and weak repairs. First, get everything lined up in place, take your time, get it right and then apply the superglue along the crack line and let it be drawn in by capillary action.

Yea, I know but they're just not the same. Watching a needle move vs a little bar display can yield more info on what's going on in the circuit. I use a Fluke 87 for 95% of my measurements but I'm never going to toss these great old Simpson/Triplett VOM's.

If I'm "looking" at a circuit, I use my TEK scope, but I appreciate your fondness for needles.

don't put an ohms meter across the meter terminals while you're testing it. it will fry the fine wire used in the meter.

Even if the meter is toast hold onto the leads. Those 90 degree plug leads are very hard to find and radio (especially antique radio) people are always looking for them.
