Funny how a certain comment about cheap import products gets misconstrued as all imported products are junk

You may be missing my point, it is not patriotism to chant "Buy American" when we have allowed government over regulation and poor engineering philosophy to push high priced short longevity goods into the market, and then buy the cheapest Indian and Chinese tools and call them ****. A patriot demands change back to marketplace economics that are driven by competition.

There is only one good reason to buy any product, that being that for the money it is the best product.

America during the 1950-70's did make the best products. We have lost that lead, and only a few Americans still think "Made in America" means quality, but the rest of the world doesn't make that mistake.
So, what country on earth today shows the most market driven capitalism?

If you said China you are right. Am I happy about that? Heck no! But I don't blame China, I blame the people in my country who took the well earned pride in American manufacturing prowess and turned it around. Part of how it happened was every time someone laughed at Chinese "****". When I was a boy it was Japan that made the "****", but now Japan makes the very best machine tools on earth.

I sure hope people can begin to look at things constructively before we lose all manufacturing.

If the only reason people buy what I make is because I live one ocean less far away, especially when other countries make as good or better products for the same $$$, I am not earning their patronage.

The problem is that somewhere along the lines the majority of people got fooled by marketing people into believing they wanted a large quantity of things rather than a few high quality things.
China just panders to the consumers whims.

I am not sure what american made products you have been buying that cannot stand up to chinese import for quality.....

While there are exceptions to everything, American products are renown for quality. If you are seeking the most durable product, American made brands are at or near the top of every single category of product. The "government overregulation" you refer to guarantees it. American manufacturing companies cannot be successful (in the long term) at low quality manufacturing because of the costs of manufacturing here. The unregulated countries (China and India primarily) beat us at "cheap and good enough".

You may now return to your regularly scheduled programming.

Two huge vises in the background. You mean you left some behind? You should have the altitude of your shop checked. I'm pretty sure the weight is pulling it below sea level.
Just amazing!

Joe, what's with the anvils with the hammers stuck to them?

One is just a little white metal paperweight. The other is is a hammer that came with the anvils loose and I just posed it on there.

Here is a little bronze one and a little aluminum anvil

That makes more sense to me, I'd seen the small one was definitely part of the anvil and assumed the other was the same .... but you had tricked me! ;)

I'm beginning to think that Craigslist is just one big storage facility for Joe.
He just uses his phone to open the lock when he needs to shift his stock around. :lol_hitti

Joe: WELL DONE. I didn't quite understand the line about telling one of your friends and then you calling and going over there and buying everything. so didn't he have time or ??

I like those little anvils and I own an aluminum one that is about 5 inches long, but that might be the first brass one I've seen.

If I understand Joe correctly, it was the guy on CL who had listed the anvils for a friend, and gave Joe the friends number to call direct when contacted.

I've been looking for a decent size anvil for years - they're as scarce as hen's teeth around here..

I make them from solid material. Some guys buy freeze plugs and with wood or something round pound out the radius. I have the machinery to fab from solid so I do it that way. If interested in making your own then let me know and I can send a sketch or PM me.

Kevin, your work is just jaw dropping

What's up with a REED 106, anything good? She weighs in at a 134#, nice curves, pretty jaws but her handle took one hell of a cheater pipe bend. The family mentioned the owner was a machinist for the rail road or something. There are numbers stamped on the side of the vise, I will get pics later, there is also two Patent dates cast in to the side of 1912 and 1914.

Nines: I've got two of those Reed 106's and neither still has their original handles. these tough old Reed 6 inchers that are about 130 pounds were the real workhorses in their day which was in the early 20's and 30's. not sure if it's red you are seeing or a nice RUST TONE.

it looks like a keeper and would look AWESOME next to that big anvil of yours if you happen to get a chance to buy it and bring it home. I would if I were near it.

TJ: since you painted that bright green Snap on Wilton Tradesman I think others with Snap on boxes have found they like it to hence Joe asking for a color chart. again WELL DONE on those that you have painted that bright green and i'm sure the green in your pocket helped let you know you did a great job. is the 98 about done or have you been building another boat?

cheers

Its on the scale at my shop Drives, Merc went to buy a piece of old iron and wanted me to ride with so i did. We were looking through the (deceased)guys garage with the family and i spotted the huge *** jaw stcking out of a pile of chains and rubbish, we drug it out and Merc made a bundle deal. Im going to give it a once over real good and it's going up for sale.

Hi Everybody,

Long time reader first time poster. Just wanted to share my attempt at a vise refinish. I saved this vise from the trash pile and I'm glad I did. I thoroughly scrubbed it down, painted it with hammered silver and blue metallic, highlighted the lettering with a silver paint marker, waxed with 4 coats of cleaner wax and polished the handles. I think I have about 4 hours of labor into it. It is definitely not as large as some of the vises here but it suits my needs just fine.

I do have a secondary reason for posting, I have a Wilton vise that needs a new home. This vise has some history with me but I'm out of room, would really hate to think it will be scrapped, hope someone can repair it to it's original glory, and it's become a toe stubber. So, if anybody in the Southern California (orange / riverside county area) would like this vise for the low-low cost of pictures of the restoration let me know.

Regards,

Cliff

Exposing a NIB Vise to the World for the First Time in Decades

I was told it was NIB but didn't believe it until I picked it up this afternoon.

Box End

Top view showing original coper-clad closures - never disturbed

I feared that there might be some rust showing - good so far

Here it is

Was in VT today and saw a CL ad for a large vise. Called the seller and was happy to see that the seller's address was a factory. Picked these two Starrets/Athols. 35 for the gray one with brass jaws and 50 for the yellow one. 4" jaws. He has more and promised a call when they were ready to sell.

My Wilton 6" offset vise was built by Dawn in Australia, and is blue, but I suspect that is Wilton blue, not Dawn blue.

The rebadging, for up north sales, maybe occurred during the time that Stanley owned the brand name ? ... '91 to '98.

OH MY God,
How cool is That?
Never saw one like that.

They do another, welded, prefabricated one, that was originally designed and built by Joplin down here.

Its a great unit too.

Right and Left side, jaw positioning, available too,

For "normal" people ... and cacky handers .. :D
