Hooking up my well just to test. It's a 3 wire. On the box I matched the colors, with green wire from well to ground. From the box, l1 and l2 is the black and white wire, bare goes to ground. The black and white wire goes to breaker, copper goes to ground.

Is the well 120v? If it's listed at 220v than L1 and L2 should be black and red (basically two hot conductors)

When you say the white wire ( usually a neutral) goes to the breaker is the breaker a gfci type breaker with a curly white wire? If the well is 120 and the breaker is gfci than it sounds correct but if it's a standard breaker you can't put both wires on the same breaker or even two different breakers cause you'll get 220v.

Can you post pics?

How are you getting 120 and 220????

If the OP is using a NM sheathed cable, with 2 conductors w/ ground, the insulated conductors will be black and white, if the pump is 240V then the white should be reidentified as any color other then white or green.

I'm not getting 120 or 220... I don't know the voltage of the well

As far as rephasing goes, I said that in my first sentence

This should get moved to the WTF thread! If you don't know what you are powering, then why are you doing it? Think!

What was there to start with? What wires were there to start with? Did you check the voltage of the wires that were there before you started, "assuming" there were wires there? This is how people get in trouble.

What gauge wires were there? Pictures? more info. We all want to help, but we don't want you to get hurt or burn something up.

OK,let me put it like this, you have an old truck, it has a red and black cable for the batteries, is this truck wired for 6VDC, 12VDC or 24VDC?

Sorry, I thought the pictures were attached. My place is out in the country so Internet is sometimes spotty on my phone.

The well pump is about 15 ft from the panel. I ran 12/2 ufb. Went from the well pump to the control box, control box to the panel on the pole. No pressure switches. I turned the water on so I wouldn't deadhead the pump.

I didn't run wire through conduit, this was just to see if the pump worked. I'm building a pump house and hooking it up the right way soon. It's all unhooked now.

Wtf is right! Your quoting me and I'm not the OP... My response was to NorCal as to how I was getting 120 and 220. I'm just trying to help but since I don't have the info I gave two possible scenarios depending on the voltage required for the well... Remember I'm the guy that asked for pictures??? Reading comprehension is lacking here.. THINK!

Is this a new well or an old well?
What wiring was fixed in place when you started?

Existing well. Undid the wire nuts that connected the well wires to the wires that used to go to the house, hooked the box to the wires going to the pump, then wire from box to panel.

That looks correct... You should be getting 220-240 v

The white wire should be rephased as white is not an acceptable "hot" wire

Yep, let it run for about 5 or 10 mins and then unhooked it.

10-4. I just wanted to test it real quick. I been meaning to do so for a year now, but didn't really feel 100% comfortable. Did some reading and some youtubing, felt mostly comfortable doing it myself, and today was real nice out so I figured wtf, and just did it.

Running it open discharge on the ground should be fine.

Becareful about using a larger HP controller than the motor's HP rating. The overload is sized accordingly and if its too large, and the motor has an overload, the windings may butn up before the overload trips!!

Get a clamp meter and a depth string. U should be able to figure out its HP rating by watching the current it draws and the depth of the well...

Everyone has been telling me that it's OK to go bigger. The previous owner told me that he wasn't sure on the size of the pump, but the pump installer installed a 1hp box.... so I went with a 1hp pump.
