Not mine, but saw this in a guy's shop today. Baldor with 12" wheels, 3HP, apparently was never even used.

A friend was moving back north and gave me this grinder, vise and a lot of other tools. Great friend, thanks Bill

And at that price will probably sit for a long while. Large bench grinders, have become a thing of the past with modern abrasive belt machines taking over. Those that need them will typically purchase new.

Yes, but if you are in the market for one, i think $900 would be a steal. Wouldnt be something to grab just to grab, but that is a good price for a "like new" 12".

Kinda, but again, those that really need the capability of a 12" unit are typically large industrial companies that NEED the capability and buying new is the best option. That way if there is a problem they can go back to the company, not some random guy on CL. Additionally the smaller or even home shops that could make use of but do not NEED, know that large grinders go for pennies on the dollar at auctions and the like. Paid $35 IIRC for my 12" cincinnati on a factory stand. Runs great. Bought it just for cool factor, honestly. Doesn't do much more than my 2x72 or 6" bench machine will for my needs.

I fully agree. For my home shop i would never NEED a 12" grinder, if i found one for $35, hell yeah i will grab it.

You a right, a company most likely wouldnt buy a used grinder, or any equipment for that matter.

I also never really understood the purpose of a larger grinder. I have a 6" and 8" Baldor, beside the bit of extra power, i perform most of the same tasks on both grinders.

Back in the day, before carbide inserts and belted abrasives came to what they be what they are today, a 10-12" ~2" wide grinder was king for stock removal, especially in the tool room where large drill bits, lathe tools and fly cutters were being ground constantly. With the invention and competitive cost of carbide insert tooling, manually sharpening tool bits has become a thing of the past or relegated to the odd ball job shop/serious home shop.

That makes sense. I do still sharpen some larger drill bits on my grinders, but other than that, i use them for cleaning (wire wheel), deburring, or metal prep work.

Well done Ted!

I had a new addition yesterday. 1/3 HP Wissota w/ 6" wheels.

Right wheel needs cleaning, and the rest is missing not to mention the shields.

Who knows?
Nice Grinder Outlaw.

I "should" be picking up a similar, but slightly older Wissota 6" 1/3 hp tomorrow when I snag that Wilton I've been talking about. Might also be getting what I think are two Hein Werner jacks and a pristine Wilton Shop King vise complete with the pipe jaws AND hardy cutter.

Ted - Very nice indeed! Only the slightest resemblance to the one I handed off to you!

Outlaw - Wissota are good quality grinders. IIRC - they made grinders for other name brands - Milwaukee (?), ... .

Great thread and some inspiring restoration work. 8” buffer/grinder, 1 hp for sale. I am patiently waiting for another Craftsman block grinder to come my way to use as a dedicated buffer but was wondering if this might be a diamond in the rough or not? Seller does not know the brand but thinks it is about 60 years old and he has had it for 26 years. Looks like it was yellow at one time but everything including the label is now painted black. Any idea on the brand and value? Thanks.

Ted - what all was done to bring it up to such a wonderful state?

Mike
Well you know the state it was in when you picked it up, I tore it down everything that was cast iron I sand blasted and primed I repainted and blasted the pedestal twice before I painted it ROYAL BLUE to match my Extreme tool box, I glass beeded the lamp shades them were the donors from a 7in I had here, redid all the wiring it was 220 hooked up to the magnetic box it is 115v now, and the cast-iron water cup is a Baldor from an auction find I parted out, stripped the paint on body also and put new bearings in it, and also two new Norton wheels a 36-60 grit the stripes were my idea just to do something different painted the front of the base silver aluminum let it dry and taped it of just simple stuff and made a new front plate some of the hardware is new some blasted, and like Dave said in his post the the cherry is the new rockwell badge on the motor.
All in all I am pretty happy with it, very smooth grinder and powerful being a 1hp Baldor

Looks like a Doerr grinder based on the motor base and wheel guards. Without a label, how do you know it's 1 hp? My guess would be no more than 3/4, and since it's missing original rests price should be under $50 to start.

Ted that is gorgeous, I have 2 just like it. You do know that those Rockwells are rebadged Baldors right? I think they are model WD122 or something like that. Hell the badge even says 'motor by Baldor'. When I redid mine the run capacitor was badged Baldor; therefore, all Baldor parts will work on this machine.

Sorry if you already knew that.

Here is my old Wissota grinder that I recently refreshed. This is a shop workhorse so making it perfect was out of the question. I replaced the plug, painted her up and threw on some new eye guards.

Almost done with my Baldor 7".

Just need to clean up the eye guards and the tool rests.

On a side, is there a trick to ordering wire wheels? The grinder calls for 7x1 wheels, so I ordered a 7x1 wire wheel. It's too wide, it rubs so much that the grinder won't start. Is that normal?

sld 961 I like that blue also I used Charcoal Grey on mine. I have not ordered the grinding or wire brush wheels yet. I always take the guard off on wire wheel side,I am not telling you to do that, just what I prefer when using the wire wheel. If it is catching on the stone side then it is obviously to wide because it should not touch at all.

Chilang: thanks. The stone side is fine, it's just the wire wheel side that rubs. I'll probably have to see if I can find a narrower wire wheel.
