Trying to decide if I should go look at this tomorrow....can't make out the writing on it. I'm a vise newbie, but I know I've seen a vise with that shape spindle before, and the marking location etc all looks familiar. Thoughts?

My guess is that the vise in question is an American Red Seal vise. It's a top shelf, solid iron vise. Manufactured by American Scale, Kansas City, Mo. I don't have a model number reference, but it looks like it has 4" jaws. Here's a reference picture below.

LOL...that's part of the problem. They haven't listed an asking price, and essentially said "come take a look if you're interested in anything" which is reasonable, but it's a bit of a drive and I'd have to take a couple of hours off work.
Thanks...I just found a picture of a very similar American Red Seal/Scale vise and was going to post that as a possibility.
It certainly looks extremely similar. I think it might be worth a trip to look at. If that's your vise, it's gorgeous!
The problem is there's no asking price. They just said "come take a look if you're interested in anything" (they have a large list of items for sale).

Sounds like fun.
You might be lucky and find that it's an estate sale, where the seller doesn't know the price, or cares. I usually come across those vises for around $50 to $100, in that condition, in my area.

Not mine. That vise is on ebay for a BIN price of $179.99 (too pricy for me, for what it is).
Thanks...I was guessing something around $100 might be reasonable. Of course there's another vise nearby that I was thinking of looking at as we...go figure!

It looks like both handles are bent a little. Easy fix, but you can use that for leverage on the price, if you need to. The body may seem loose on the base (happened with my American Scale #75H). Easy fix also. Biggest thing to watch for is any cracks, welds and the condition of the spindle nut.
I was thinking the same thing, but hadn't noticed the body being loose on the base....every little detail helps!
It sounds like a regular estate sale, so it may not be the owners actually doing the pricing/negotiating. If so, that's probably a good thing...you can point out the flaws without offending them.

The lock down stud at the base gets worn out. To fix it, I ground some excess metal at the base if the stud, and added a washer in the top side, under the nut/handle. That will clamp down the vise good. I also did that to a large Athol vise. My "guess" on that is based on the bent handle.
I wasn't able to get to the sale, but the vise appears to have shown up on CL today....asking $150.
The description says it has 5.5" jaws, but the model number appears to be a 64, and that should be 4" or possibly 4.5" jaws going off what I've found online.
