Can anyone I.D. these vises? I know the black one is a Parker but maybe one of you can tell what model it may be (I know it's very difficult from the pic). I'm more interested in the green one though, which is the main reason for me making this post.

Green one looks to be a Bison Bial 125. The 125 is the jaw width in millimeters. Approximately 5 inches.

VA: Yep and you started it. now look what Outlaw thinks your chain gang is worth. I think he undervalued it by a lot. :bounce: :eyecrazy:

Euro: not certain that isn't an import. it could be a Bison like FD mentioned, but it's awfully shiny chrome on the handle and it just doesn't have that quality look like a Bison one does to me. let us know if you see it or buy it what it is.

Anybody watching the baby Lewis last night.---1 3/4" jaws.---No one was talking about it, so radio silence usually means there's a bunch watching.---Me included.---Never seen a baby Lewis before.---Figured it to go pretty high.---Way out of my league.---I have it's big brother.---Big brother missed his little brother, but not that bad.

Mine are the lower 3 pics.

DOX: thanks for taking the time to take and post more pictures of Gramp's old vise. it looks a lot like a COLE vise and i'm not really a fan of those vises, but I surely would like to own the one your Gramps gave you. that is a sweet looking vise and it looks like all it needs is a little cleaning and grease and some bolts to mount it to your bench or old growth stump.

if you keep it please post pictures of how you mount it and tell us how you like it.

VA: not sure you couldn't afford that little guy, but maybe if you got in the mix the price with the buyer that REALLY WANTED it might have got a lot higher. I can't find any little guys hence the pricing. I wonder if someone has a barn or huge shop full of these?

ALL: kinda quiet today on the thread and around here. anybody spending time spiffing up their vise and want to share the process on the vise repair 101 thread please do because there is lots of room for more vises over there.

Bought this 1780 today for $50. First vise and after I move and get new shop wired it will cleaned up. Couple broken pieces and surface rust but that's it.

OO, welcome to the Journal.---Tons of information on hundreds of topics to be gleaned.---This thread alone speaks volumes.---Really nice first vise, and the minimal damage is exactly that. ---Starting out with a big combo.---Not bad.---Most of us had to work up to that.

Since it's quiet, I recently obtained a workbench with tube steel legs and a 1.25 inch thick steel top, so to say it's heavy is an understatement. Which vise would you outfit on it? My choices are a rock island 577, a Parker 436, or a reed 4c. I'm leaning toward the Parker personally and maybe selling the 4C as I would like to raise enough cash for a midrise lift. If you had this "problem", what would you do?

ALL: dang if I didn't buy 3 vises today. yes they might be small, but 2 are KEEPERS and i'll post pics later. i'm over the shakes for now and happy that my Achilles tendon injury is letting me get out and about again.

JRobb: the 4c is too big for a work table so sell it or make a stand for it. the Parker is pretty rare and you might end up working on some pretty BIG STUFF with a table that big so mount it on a small bench that you want to do your little stuff on. so that leaves the 577 which isn't too bad of an option and i'm sure you won't be unhappy with the decision.

don't you have or want another bench with your two big Morgans on them or maybe you should put both Morgans on your new steel bench since you seem to like them too. so many choices and so little space for most of us. congrats on the table and post up some pictures as you have time.

00: that vise will spiff up nicely and it's a quality one too. welcome to the group and the forum.

The Parker is probably physically bigger (taller) than the 4C. They both tip the scales in the 180 lb range. This bench is not long enough for my dualing Morgan 50 setup, that's for a later date. One heavy bench, one heavy vise. Which one would you want on it?

JROBB: definitely the Rock Island 577 if those are the three options you want to choose from. I like your plan selling the 4C and keeping the huge Parker. i'm not sure about Parker #'s, but isn't that a double or triple swiveling vise? if so putting it on a stand and moving it to where you need it might be your ACE in the hole so to speak.

also how do you plan to drill the mounting holes in your thick steel table or do you have a Mag drill?

That is the 6" humpback combo Parker. It weighs 187 lbs if I recall correctly. I have access to a mag drill, yes. As you know rock island is probably my favorite brand so I'm not opposed at all to the 577 option.

JROBB: since you want to buy a nice lift i'd say sell both the big Parker and the Reed 4c because they would be too tall for the bench. it's not that both 4c and Parker are not great vises just too tall for a standard bench. i'm not a fan of Parker, but if the triple barrel or a real small one was sitting in front of me with a price tag less than the cash in my wallet i'd be the owner of it.

Vises with BLO on shiny steel benches look awesome and sorry I don't have a picture handy, but i'm sure you'll agree once you put the 577 on yours. your farm fresh 577 should clean up nicely.

Hey all, I've been really busy with my new job but had a chance to make a quick purchase. This thing looks barely used. And it's the smallest swivel jaw Parker I've seen. Parker 270. I paid the asking price of $100.

those 370's are pretty sweet. I have the exact same one, i only paid $15 for it at a flea market.
Did you buy that one from the guy on craigslist? New britian i think. If its the same guy, i offered him $75 for it and he pretty much laughed at me. Said he was gonna put it on ebay.

Just got my second Smart's open screw vise from member Jazz1 last week.---As some know , I'm not an ardent collector of open screw vises and yet I have several.---That includes odd ones, rare ones, and sentimental ones.---They have earned their place in American history IMO.

Here's the #66, and #7-11 Smart's.---If memory serves, I think Jazz1 said that Smart's is a defunct Canadian Co., probably a hundred posts back.---And he gave the history of the Co.---I'll see if I can conger it up.

Very cool va! On a side note, that Boulder in the background is pretty impressive!

Bagged-so very nice man. Great find! Great shape!

Here's my side of the road find today. Nothing special, someone spray bombed it, but it's a great workhorse d45 m3 that I'll find a home for. Can't argue the price! ;)

Yea Evergreen, that wasn't where that boulder was supposed to be.---The guy that pushed it up there was using a huge military surplus loader and that's where it went kaput.---Hauled the loader away and that's where the rock set.---It was supposed to be 75' further up the hill, out of the middle of the yard.---But we've kind-of gotten used to it.---I've backed into it twice and knocked two tail-light clusters out.---Each time I had bad thoughts about that guy.:(

Va-people pay good money around here for boulders when they don't have any, and those that have them pay good money to get rid of them! I'll let boulders take credit for paying for a few vises, because after all, this is a vise thread! :)

Joe: Before you edited the post and told me you bought Jake's little York I didn't have clue what the heck game we were playing. WELL DONE and happy to see you've got a better and maybe a complete set of York vises. i'm still looking for one i can see or maybe hold and buy and some day and i'm sure i will.

I can't say I even PM'd or emailed Jake because I was thinking he was going to keep it, but i'm sure you guys worked out a fair trade.

VA: your table might need some BLO (or stain) because all the vise pictures you take on it are wearing down the finish.

Damn Rock and quit running into it would you.

EG: isn't that the truth. what some people consider an eyesore or something to remove others want to pay to have it. you might say that about trees too that might pay for a few of your other vises. i followed a guy into the gas station in Oregon a few days ago that had this tree very professionally wrapped up and saw him again 100 miles up the road because i had stopped to eat. any idea why a guy would be hauling a Cut 60 foot tree hundreds of miles? especially here in the PNW where trees grow everywhere. you can PM me with your thoughts or post with another vise picture or question.

ALL: so i still need to get pictures of the new additions to my vise family, but thought i'd let you know one vise was a Wilton. another a Palmgreen and the third one is i think a Versa vise.

hope you all are having a nice weekend while i'm pulling the dang weeds and getting the garden and planting areas ready for some delicious food a few months from now.

cheers

Anybody with a small Prentiss vise that wants to sell it there is a new member wanting to buy one from one of us and he can't post in the wanted ads. i think he knows it will cost a few bucks so if anybody has a baby Prentiss and would rather have the cash pm or email me for the guy's name.

Drives-never seen anything like that! Bizarre. The way it's wrapped is keeping moisture in, so they are trying to preserve it visually for something.

The chance doesn't come up often to share this kind of pic! Had to. Lived in ca for a good stretch.

Now back to vises!

Evergreen, the big rock and the three legged pot make a pretty good backdrop for my vise photos.---The junk in front of my shop, not so much.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Drive, what's taking the finish off the picnic table is the dog.---She lays on top and chews up everything under the sun.---I've nocked off sticks, rocks, deer legs, moles, squirrels, birds, you name it.---I wouldn't eat off that table if I was starving.

Oh, your big tree is probably going to the Rockefeller Center.---Christmas in July.:bounce:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In keeping with the vises theme, here's a little Fulton I got recently.---Got me a 301 Power-Arm with benefits.---The saddest thing is, someone cut off the table clamp end of a rare little vise so as to adapt it to the Power-Arm.:(---If they had of asked the Journal members what they thought of the idea first, there would have been a resounding NOOOOOOOOOOOOO.---In time I hope to graft a clamping end back onto the vise, if I can just find an identical looking donor clamp.---Their probably like snow flakes.

Oh, forgot to mention, the vise works just like the Pittsburg or the Versa-Vise.---When you tighten down on something, it ceases to swivel.

Love that Fulton VA, does the missing clamp have a plate that swivels with the table clamp. Gotta find a rotating vise. Could make one if so but will not look original.

Making pipe jaws for a Starrett 326 today. Had the camera close by and thought I'd share some machining shots.

Awesome work KM.---I don't know who those jaws are for, but they can take it from me, a #326 is worth spending some money on.---214 lbs. of pure grip.---I've got 2 of them and wouldn't take 3 Gold Monkeys for either.

On the Fulton, everything is there and original, they just sawed off the lower half of the clamp.---The clamp plate has 5 or 6 pre-drilled positions and what looks like a wing-nut on the side is the position adjustment grip.---When tightening, an internal cam kicks upward and keeps the head from swiveling/rotating.---Sorry, I didn't make that clear in the first post.

Fulton bought a Reed patent back in the day.---You can see and read it on B100s post on page 1622.

VA: I'm not sure you'll be starving anytime soon to have the chance to even consider eating on that table and good to hear it has more uses than just a vise stand. OMG that was some list that your critters go up there with on that table.

ALL: I haven't inspected this little Palmgren very closely, but took a few pictures in case any of you might have one with all the label or if you know any information about this one. it will look good on my little Canady Otto DP and i'll clean it up and take more pictures as I can.

Went on a nice drive earlier today to pickup this guy.

Gave it a quick wipe down after getting home, seems to be in very nice shape. The seller mentioned that he probably used it ten times or so since purchasing it in the early '90s. He explained that Duke Power used to outfit their service trucks with these and sometime in the late '80s they switched to some other type of tool on their new trucks. He purchased it directly from Duke when they were selling their old stock. Also has a set of copper jaws that were placed on the vise when new...jaws have never been used without them.

For size reference, those tires are 37s.
