It may well be already too late, but this old craftsman drill press is for sale in Alameda, CA for $30. With a speed reducer!

Your best bet is to email and beg him to hold it until you get there.

I would be all over it, a GJ member who is close by better go get it soon; it won't last long. The Vari-slo option is desirable.

Nice find dngrmse!

Got it! I didn't even see this posted here, just a coincidence! It definitely belonged to a craftsman. The wood press table is nicely made with t-slots, the stand has a nice storage cabinet built into it, and the wiring for the switch to an outlet on the back is neatly run inside. It runs very well. I think the only thing I may do to it is give it a new paint job.

Unfortunately the Vari-Slow controller arm is bent. I'm exploring my options to bend it back without breaking it.

Nice job scoring that drill press, I'm jealous.

If you decide to bend the arm back, be very careful; I believe it's either cast metal or pot metal.

I hope you get it....however, after I posted the listing I looked closer and it seems those are two different drill presses in the pictures; different motors, pulleys, colors. There's been a scammer on the SF Bay CL who's posted bogus drill press listings before, and I hope it's not him again. Why anyone would do that is beyond me (fake drill press listings of all things??) but the internet has all kinds.

Fingers crossed this one's legit, and has your name on it!

Larry is right. I too noticed different pictures from the same guy. Several days ago I emailed the guy saying I didn't have any anvils to trade but I would trade him one of my bigger vises...Prentiss, Athol, or Columbian. (As you know, any of those is worth more than $30!)
I never heard back.

Also beats me why anybody would spend their time writing fake listings for old drill presses. :dunno:

I had noticed this too. All Floor model Craftsmans (new models and vintage) all for $30-50. Someone had even created a listing asking what the deal was with the dirt cheap DP's and asking if they were scams.

Looks like this guy has moved further north in CA and increased his asking price quite a bit. This is on CL in Redding for $350! Look familiar? Does this sound familiar? "Nice drill press with a speed reducer. I can trade for a nice anvil, big or small." https://redding.craigslist.org/tls/5567889605.html

So it's official then. There is a nutjob on craigslist, not the first by any means, but whose particular hobby is re-posting other drill press listings.

Drill press weirdos aside, here's a (hopefully legit) posting for a Matco box and grinder in Healdsburg CA. $100 for the box alone, $40 for the grinder, and $120 for the pair. Wish I saw this earlier, may already be gone:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/tls/5566052604.html

"Older matco tool box in good shape solid no dents nothing missing or broken repainted with black bed liner spray $100 obo and brand new silver eagle die grinder from matco $40 still in original package buy both and I'll give it to you for $120 also have more air tools if interested"

Do you suppose that those ads are intended to get email addresses to sell? Just guessing, as I can't think of anything to be gained from just posting bogus ads.

That's my guess too, though of all the things to chum the waters with, vintage drill presses would be down the list.

Aren't the Craigslist email replies anonymous with that Craigslist number address? What good would that be anyway?
Not the real personal email address!

I think the generic email address only goes with the seller. When you reply to the ad, it comes from your real email address.

It's with trembling fingers I'm posting this one. Another drill press. This posting doesn't fit the scammer mould-- old, dirty, and with a story behind it.

"This drill press was left at a shop. The motor runs but it has no belt. Maybe more of a nostalgia piece or the beginning of a cool shop lamp? I hate to just throw it in the scrap metal pile....... "

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/tls/5567787639.html

My own drill press at home is the same model, and it's probably 75 lbs, maybe more. Definitely worth the $40 the owner is asking IMO.

Somebody rescue this classic !
Worth $40 no question.

(but might this be the infamous email address collector refining his technique?)

I hope the email collector is not a GJ member reading these posts.

Let's hope it is legit and that someone down there can save this old drill press. "Maybe more of a nostalgia piece or the beginning of a cool shop lamp?" Really? It appears to be in pretty decent condition.

I agree 100%
But if all you have is a fragment of an elegantly designed tool, you have my vote to turn it into something like this...

Anyone have any idea the column diameter of that Craftsman DP? I've been looking for a clean replacement table for my Delta-Rockwell 15-665 (15", 2 3/4" column diameter).

20 inch Vertical Band Saw - $350 (Riverside, CA)

They don't get cheaper than this, throw a VFD on it and you'll have a large 20" bandsaw for metal and wood for under $500. Looks almost new and comes with fence.

This size (20 inch) and Rikon style of band saw always sell for way more. Excellent clearance for resaw.

"In working condition
Size 76H x 36Wx 20D
Table size 24 X 20 INCH
MFG Date:1998
Model N0. SB-1000
3 Phase power"

The back half of the face on the anvil is missing and the top is curled over. It does not even qualify as an anvil anymore. That guy is way out of bounds on his description and his price. I would scrap it if it was mine. He has been trying to sell it for about 6 mos.

The listing is gone unfortunately, deleted by the seller (legit drill press posting? Be still my beating heart.) but the diameter on my drill press column is 2.75"

Plvmb Pulley Puller Set 6 + Extra Stuff + American Made - $150 (Chatsworth, CA)

For you Plumb collectors.

"I used to use these pullers for both Automotive and Air Conditioning applications, but not any more. There are at least six pullers and an extra puller (without jaws) that matches the jaws on one of the boxed sets. Some pullers use jaws and some require your own "pull bolts" for your particular length and thread applications. The 3 big items on the right side of the picture, sorry, I don't know what they are really called, but we used to call them pulley grippers or wedges. Very handy for pulleys with messed up pull holes or without any pull holes at all. This stuff is all American made like Proto or Plomb. If you have been looking to buy some of these new, you know you could spend much more for just a single puller set. Take 'em away!"
