Concrete bag question

I feel like an idiot. We are working on a paver patio in our backyard. We plan on putting up a pergola and a freestanding retaining wall. Like any project, it is taking longer than expected.

A couple of months ago I bought about 20 bags of concrete to pour footings for the pergola and retaining wall. Let's just say the bags got wet i.e. I never thought to cover them up. The bags have hardened on the outside. I can break them apart with a hammer.

My question is, if I break them up, would I be able to mix them in a barrel mixer to finish breaking them up go ahead and mix them or am I just out of luck?

I have a feeling that I already know the answer.

I have used the un hardened portions of bags that have gone through what you experienced. The hard stuff will probably not break up at all, at least not through mixing. The good news is that for footings, you can just leave the lumps right in the mix, it's not like you are going to try to finish the surface or anything.

i'm with tciani, smaller chunks anyways should be ok in footings. save what you can, toss the larger hardened pieces out...

Simple problem. Go to where you bought the 1st 20 bags and buy 20 more. Then using the receipt from the newer bags, return the hardend bags to the store and throw a fit. Ask them just what kind of Chinese junk they're trying to pawn off on us. Do this at their busiest time of day. Works every time.

So, you think it's 'ok' to return 20 bags of concrete that are of little to no use....not because they were defective, but because the original buyer didn't cover them?

Lets see....20 bags...typically 90 lbs each....thats 1800 lbs....your suggesting that he move them 4 times? Pick up from HD...take home and unload....load up bad bags....take to HD and unload.......yep....that is real smart.....

And you wonder why prices are going up? You're the kind of person that I 'dislike'....it's people like you that cause me to cuss when I open up a box to only find a used piece of equipment in it because you wanted to cheat the company by returning it.

I'm going to stop now before I end up using the word 'jerk' or a few other choice words....not because they don't fit, but because I am usually one of the ones ragging on other people for making personal attacks.....
