As I was perusing the Kijiji listings tonight I made the decision to get in the truck and head there instantly. I'm new to this vise stuff but this pristine Craftsman seemed like it was something that I wanted... now! I picked it up for $90 and it is like new other than some surface rust. The jaws look like they've never touched another cold piece of steel.

He had it for the last 11 years and it was there when he bought the place.

Cleaned up a Morgan 30 for my wife's work, gonna sell it in a silent auction for the school. I did not replace the jaws but did record the size. Nice small vise

The last picture is of a Wilton PowRscrew Vise with 4-1/2 inch jaws. If anyone owns one of these could you let me know what the height of the jaws are. They are odd ball jaws and are bolted in from the back side. Thanks in advance

Picked up a Wilton 4" bullet today. The guy had a high number on it, I went to his storage unit to look at it I showed him it had a broken static jaw ledge I offered him $30, he said ok Then he said doI want anything else, I gave him $70 more for a Husqvarna 340 Chainsaw a Snap on Torque Wrench, 20 ton bottle jack and a large Craftsmen adjustable wrench. Chainsaw works great need to get the torque wrench calibrated. Crazy day.

Quick question what type of rod would I tell a welder to use to build back the ledge on the Wilton?

That's a nice one cwh! my RS 66 weighed in at 137 lbs! respectable for a 6" vise! What did you give for the combo if you don't mind me asking??

Don't know much about it, but this one came with a welding table I just bought.

American Scale Company #66 "Red Seal".

That's the first time I have seen that style of Craftsman vise with a 5 1/2" jaw, I though they only went up to 5" Nice find!

Calling on Viseman/people for help with identifying Mfg & age on my garage sale find yesterday...6" wide replaceable jaws x 1 1/8 deep . I haven't put her on the scale yet (wife's home [emoji16] ) but I'd say close to 75 lb. I see there is a makers mark but the logo that has been mostly worn away.

I gave 30.00 for her but had to take the POS bench with it... only way the deal was going to happen torn it apart to get into my small SUV..no idea if it was a good deal or not but runs smooth and jaws are in great shape.

Thanks all.uploadfromtaptalk1463241301603.jpguploadfromtaptalk1463241309100.jpguploadfromtaptalk1463241317374.jpguploadfromtaptalk1463241328138.jpg

Kevin,

This isn't a PowRscrew model, but it is similar and it has 4 1/2" jaws. The height of the jaws are 1 3/16".

Watsondog,
I'm going to guess that it's a Bison or a FPU (manufactured by Bison) vise. Bison vises are top shelf vises made in Poland. You can google "Bison vise" to get more information.

I'm keeping it as a guess because of how the handle ends are finished off.

Can you take a picture of the other side and the underside of the vise
without the base? There may be more clues.

Long & short, you got a steal for 30$.

Are you going to restore it?

Blue, Thanks so much. Yes your jaws are the same. Gonna help my friend out and make him a set. I could have came up with a height number but now I know what the original is.

Just finished fitting a pair of Parker jaws this morning, these are big jaws. Faces measure 6-1/4 x 2 inches high. Sure easier to fit Parker's when the vise is in front of me.

Thanks again Blue.

Watson: easy to fix that VISE BUG as you call it. just PM one of us to buy any of those OVER PRICED vises you find. Mark and CW are right on that you have a Bison FPU vise where the static jaw moves backwards. I've been looking for a big one like that for a while here but I guess I was lucky to find the 3 incher I found.

that big Athol might be the only vise a guy needs for his shop unless of course he belongs or GJ or the vise thread specifically. nice find.

WELCOME TO GJ and sounds like you will fit in just right around here. I can't tell you how many guys have been complaining or whining about buying vises or tools and next thing you see is them buying a few more and smiling. all you have to do is sell ONE ONCE IN A WHILE to keep from being a HOARDER. unless of course you are a COLLECTOR.

cheers

Scored a Reed 204R today. My first pug nosed vise.
They were originally asking $75, but offered it up for $60. I bundled it with a few other things and walked out $80 poorer.

Other than a little rust on the bare metal, some dirt and a little over spray, the vise is in great condition and runs smoothly. Original grey paint.

Jake: you and Joe really do live in vise heaven because I pay about 2 times that much for a non swivel model and drive 3 hours to pick it up.

i'm guessing you finally found your 4 footed Reed base and darn it if there wasn't a REALLY NICE vise attached. WELL DONE SIR!!

Picked up a Parker 824 off CL today. It was 2.5 hours from me, but I was driving 20min past there to pick up a bandsaw anyway. At $120 I'm sure I overpaid going off GJ pricing, but it looks clean, and the kid (early 20s) selling it went out of his way to meet me closer to the town the bandsaw was in. Regardless, now I have a Parker :)

I haven't posted here in a while, got a little crafty today and decided to build a vise stack.
Here's my vises that'll occupy my shop.
e74b45a3dc85f42d8e0a25a920ba2486.jpg
7af1395d21da0b75dbd2e1f23ae009ae.jpg
The bottom four are Columbians, next a Parker, a versa vise and a couple clamp ons, one being a Sears.
The bottom Columbian has 8" jaws. It was drugged out to where you see it. It will reside on a 12" square tube stand bolted to the slab in frond the shop.
The rest will be used on a couple of benches.

Went to pick up a bandsaw today, and the guy said "do you like vises?" Sure, what have you got? OMG....this is just a few I took pictures of, starting with a Reed 34 and then a bunch of Columbians:

So, how many did you buy?

None...I'd already spent all the cash I brought with me on the saw and the Parker. I'm not sure if that's a good, or bad thing!

I left the door open on a couple of them. I really liked that Reed 34, and the Columbian 205 (4th picture) just had a look I liked. I may see if he'll hold them for me if I send him payment....super nice guy. I just didn't expect to run into someone selling a bunch of large, nice vises like that. That won't happen again!

Picked up my Craftsman 5188 Friday. So VERY pleased. Original paint, original owner (his grandfather) original mounting bolts. Original paint is most interesting. Dark blue and an exact match for my Hammerite dark blue.

It is my third vise in restoration line. Cannot wait to tackle it

Top: hadn't heard a story like that one before. pretty nice investment if you ask me.

also pretty cheap bail so maybe JAYWALKING?

GMan: BEEEE CAREFUL because it is looking like you are getting or maybe already have a vice for vises. yes? one tip if you keep wanting to buy just the 6 and 8 inchers because they are harder to find and you need a lot of cash you might be able to curb your vice. also spread them out in the shop so your bride can never see more than a couple without a complete inspection. Riley came up to my house today and he saw a few, but I might have 50 buried around my house that are even too hard for me to get to without some work.

Cheers and I would have had fun at that guys place too and sounds like Tedster and maybe a few other GJ members already have.

Not yet. This is a 4" pug nose, I'm still looking fora base for the 4.5" bulb nose. I just bought a 3-footed base off eBay (I'm hoping this one fits), we'll see how it goes once it shows up.

Went down to Tucson for a drive today and picked up another 4inch Wilton bullet, this one is nice gave the guy what he was asking, he was happy I was happy. Need to decide what color to paint the big Wiltons.
Finished up a Morgan Chicago 135 it was beat to hell jaws were pretty bad. I got it working good locking screw is a bit small but it works. The Morgan 88 I had the jaws were in great shape so I put a really nice polish on them, these I left more of a brushed finish to hide some of the abuse. It will still make a decent vise for someone.

I bailed the brother of an employee out once, $600. I assumed he would pay me back, he did pay back about $100. Never again!

You, however, did good.
