The french cleat works well, for sure, the things that lilscorpion has done far exceed my abilities. Looking good overall, now I am interested in one of those vise brakes, I keep seeing them pop up in threads.

Strouty, appreciate you dropping by. Yep the vise brakes are handy, I've only made one set of brackets so far but the limiting factor is the size of the vise determining the depth of material you can insert before the vise itself interferes with where you want to put the bend it if that makes sense. I think an offset engineers vise would be the go but I don't have one of them (at least yet) to try out.

Cheers GB.

GB: great idea with the murals.

i'm planning on hanging a fairly heavy cabinet above my workbench with French cleats after hearing from a few members that is the best way. there are a few posts about it on the metal cabinets thread over in vintage section if you have time to take a peek.

your garage looks great and would love to see it on my NEW ORGANIZING 101 thread that won't be just about my STUFF.

cheers and always fun to see what you are up to.

Thanks drives. My wife is the artistic one and has wanted to do that art work for a few years so she is very happy at the moment that she can finally start.

I think french cleats will work well in any space where you will want to move things around, will have to go and look at what you are doing with the cabinet.

Cheers GB

Cool, I do need to go back and repost the photos on the first few pages when I get 5 so they are bigger.

Just checked your updated picture, I'm yet to work out where to put bikes, they are shoved in my office at work at present.

Cheers GB.

Yeah, bike storage is a pain. I've got 6 pushbikes at the moment, and two motorbikes, and a kid bike trailer, and two prams that also (unfortunately) live in the the garage.

With my new found love of putting everything on wheels, I've been toying with the idea of building a portable bike storage rack.

My idea is to building something quite tall that can have two bikes on each side, one high and one low.

Not sure if it will be stable enough, but I think I'll give it a go.

GB, Still checking everyday to see what's going on in your world. Don't care if you're too busy to post, just looking for what the hell you're up to. Now I've got to add twobytes to my "check out" list.

Twobytes, you've been warned.:lol_hitti

Still here mate, no progress on much as I am resting this sciatic nerve pain that's knocked me about the last couple of weeks. It's finally on the mend so hopefully another easy weekend and a physio session or two more will see me getting back to more productive things.

I have the bits lined up to do the French cleating on the garage wall so will start on that probably in 2 weeks or so.

Also no welding tonight but hopefully good to go again next week.

Cheers GB.

Haha, I've been thinking about starting my own garage thread, but I spend too much time reading the awesome stuff that you guys post!

I started reading yours today dlc, and I'm still only half way through this one.

It's a weird sort of limbo when I decide to start reading a thread from the start, going back in time, but also posting in the present.

GB, that ***** mate. I get that quite a bit too, after some lower back injuries in my 20s and early 30s when I thought I was invincible. Dirt bikes and poor form in the gym mostly.

Based on something I read somewhere in your thread, I think we're about the same age. I'm 40 this year, and I've recently noticed that I don't recover as quickly, or as well as I used to! :eyecrazy:

You better start a thread soon or DLC will be all over your ***. LOL.

After you hit 40 it's all down hill. My body tells me once in a while... WTF HEY JACKASS YOUR NOT 20 NO MORE. CALM THE F@CK DOWN. As you can tell from my post lately I've been following occurring. Drinking beer and staring at the walls in my garage. LOL

GB: do you have an spots to hang your bikes from the ceiling if you are still looking for a solution? I once upon a time had 4 bikes hanging from J hooks and had to duck in a few spots in my garage where the bikes were hanging, but they were out of the way and off the floor.

hope you are enjoying the holiday weekend or is it a holiday for you guys down under?

Just peeping in. Hope all is well Rod.

Hi Dan, all is well. Sciatic issues on the mend finally so actually able to focus on getting caught up on a lot of work. Hoping to get to the welding course this week and get some pics back up here.

In garage related news I have borrowed my Dads doweling jig as I plan to make the various French cleat attachments using dowels instead of screws.

Thanks for checking in.

(Sorry guys there are a few other comments here that I will come back to and update)

Cheers GB.

Take care!

TB, that's sounds like an interesting solution, you'll have to post that up on your thread once you sketch it out.

Just a normal weekend it was here drives. I think I have a spot for the bikes just under the back of the house - but not set on that yet and a few other things to finish first.

Thanks for dropping by.

Thanks for posting Jon, much more comfortable in the last couple of days, I just need to watch now I don't overdo it too soon and go backwards again.

Hope you are getting some miles on the vega with the sun out.

Mr herb, good to see you back here again and thanks for the comments. There is more chicken action to come soon as I'm going to make a couple of changes to the main coop.

I see you got yourself some trout on your fishing adventures.

On the subject of bike storage try out this thread here on GJ for a few good ideas. Some of them for holding multiple bikes.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=222392&highlight=Bicycle+Storage

For myself, I only have two at the moment to store and I've tried everything from ceiling hangers to just parking them on the floor. Finally I'm at this stage in the pic below. I chose the least used corner of the garage and added a piece of the Craftsman slat wall stuff with bike hangers. This allows me to slide them a little if needed in two directions. Then I tried to dedicate the floor space in that corner to other items that won't get moved often like my air compressor and some long term storage bins, step ladders etc also hung on the slat wall.

Thanks Strouty, yep it certainly takes the fun out of any projects with the back. Especially on the weekend which is pretty much the only project time I have.

Just gotta watch doing too much on it too soon is my issue.

Anyway one shall soldier on.

Thanks RM I'll check out that thread. I dare say that they are going to have to be stored out of my garage maybe under the back of the house at this stage.

If it wasn't for all the kids clutter ( toys/bikes etc) I'd have more room :)

Cheers GB

Welding course week 15 (missed the last 2 weeks)

Good to get back to this last night.

A bit more technical - vertical and overhead welds plate to a pipe section.

Vertical not too bad, it's certainly more challenging when the material is not straight.

Weld on a section of pipe....then butcher off half of it with the gas torch and weld the cut bit on the other side of the plate...

View media item 61052
View media item 61053
Same again later only with larger diameter pipe, bit too much wire speed going here...

View media item 61059
Overhead 3 pass - yeah well that was hard, nothing more to see here

View media item 61058
Also had a demo of this bad boy - sub arc welder. Used for welding pressure vessels.

What a mean piece of kit.

The hopper feeds a granular flux material down that goes straight on top of the weld and comes off as a clean bit of slag.

Yay it's Friday (for us over this side of the pond anyway) - have a good day

I can remember cleaning up around the SUB arc at the end of the Hot Strip Mill Machine shop one night on night shift. Our Forman had caught us doing practical jokes ( light green plastic shim in one fellas sandwich in replacement for his lettuce, the foreman's, that is) It took about 3x 44 gallon drums of powder to load the deck to build up the edge roller guides and would run for 7 shifts.

The jobs are disappearing in there.

I'm sure of two things here. One, It's a good thing NOT to have excruciating pain. It doesn't allow one to do much. Two, you must be happy that you got back to the welding class. You seem to be enjoying it a lot.

I'm with Mark, I won't be showing off any of my welds( if I can use the term loosely.)

Thanks, Well it seems we made it through Friday, now up early again for kids swimming lessons in the morning. Cold wet weather, lucky the pool is heated for them.

A shim sandwich hey  tasty.

So putting two and two together I assume that the RHS etc that we all know and love is welded on that seam with a sub arc? Makes sense now, I never knew of them until last night.

Some of those welds are really looking great GB (I don't think I'll be showing any close-ups of mine).

Thanks BB, A bit of spatter got down my top too doing the overheads and almost got too low for comfort. :wtf:

Nice work mate, can really see the skills increase as you go. Thanks for sharing

Hewey, thanks. I certainly feel comfortable now with some of the tasks. We only have two weeks until the course completes and they are to be made up of an assessment project to show several skills, so that should be interesting. Maybe next year I will see if I can pursue maybe the advanced GMAW course or one of the fabrication units, will just have to see what is offered.

Lyndon, after 20 years in the game it is getting a bit long in the tooth in some respects. Probably a few more years yet but it would be nice to scale back a bit and pursue less sedentary activities and interests that don't require a desk, certainly not at the local steel works though :lol_hitti:

How did you get a WAITER ?

Have a good weekend guys.

Cheers GB

Yep I can vouch for that for sure. Ouchy ouchy. And it's not just the injured that feel the strain, wifes and partners that have to pick up the slack while you are out of action too also make it difficult, especially when you have young kids. (Ok enough sob story:spit:)

The welding course has been a lot of fun. Hopefully I can do some more related courses in the future. Will be interesting now going back to my single phase 190A welder after having used the 350A 3phase beasts for the last few months.

Cheers GB.

I have just given up myself, we have had "copious liquid quantiles of precipitation here also". But I did manage to get a clear vinyl rain screen up by myself that will keep the chook taster a bit drier when she is being a door bell, this is another brownie point for me.
