Hi guys, I figured I would start a thread about the SPG pro series toolboxes, since I couldn't find much info when I bought mine.

I purchased the 42" wide 14 drawer roller cabinet from home depot online, about 2 years ago now. I ordered it from home depot so I could put it on my home depot credit card and get 18 month terms with no payments or interest. It works out nicely for me, as I could just divide the payments into weekly payments, since at the time I was only 2 years into my apprenticeship and wasn't making a lot of money yet.

This is the box I purchased. I just stole the image off the Internet, since I forgot to snap a pic of mine before I left work today.

So home depot does not stock this box, but only make it available online and it drop ships directly from SPG International. The box arrived 2 days after I placed my order, but the crate arrived damaged in transit, and the top left corner of the box was bent over. I made a quick call to home depot and they arranged for another box to be sent from SPG and the courier took the old box back with them.

Initial impressions were very good. It comes with roller bearing casters, roller slides on all drawers, double roller slides on 2 of the deep drawers. It has a lift latch style handle that holds the drawers shut when moving the box around and are quite easy to activate when you want in the drawers.

Overall the box is solid and stable when wheeling it around. I've never had any concerns with tipping or being shaky/wobbly at all. It's certainly not as heavy gage steel as the likes of a snap on or mac etc, but it's quite nice for the money. They do produce a level up from this pro series box, known as the super heavy duty, which I imagine is heavier gage steel.

My only complaints as far as quality are the following. The box came with a set of fitted liners, which was nice, but they are very thin, soft material that moves around way too much when you open and close the drawers. I will be switching those out to something better. The other issue I wasn't totally blown away with was the ends of the drawer handles. The handles are extruded aluminum and quite sharp. So SPG includes a baggie of molded plastic end caps to push onto the handles. They must have had issues with people losing the caps because they sent way more than needed. They do occasionally pop off. I may end up epoxying them on at some point.

Aside from those 2 small complaints, I have been very pleased with the box overall. It's been sturdy and stables and looking like new....until my boss backed into it with a fork truck.

He managed to dent in 4 of the aluminum handle/latches, 1 full length drawer and 3 of the 11.5" drawers. The dent crimped in on the latch and I had to bend the handles out to be able to open the drawers. My boss felt quite sheepish and of course offered to pay to replace the handles. I sent an email to the customer service link on their website, amd received a reply the next day. They just wanted to confirm exactly which drawers needed new handles and asked for my address, and 2 days later I received new drawer handles/latches and even the rivets to replace them, all free of charge.

All in all I have been very pleased with my purchase and would recommend them to others looking for a mid range toolbox.

Good review. Glade people still take the time for a lengthy review such as that. And i enjoy the fact it was a long term review. Not just delivered last week and already saying how good the quality is.

All in all sounds like a good tool box, and i like the dealings you had with their customer service.

I don't Have a ton to go from but when I said i needed an extra set of slides for my box they sent them right away,They said the extra set for that drawer were an add on but did me a one time "freebie" , Granted its not a snap on but it was cheaper and for my occasional use I think its just fine. The walls are thicker than any of my friends regular boxes from the big box store.

This is a small pic of the damaged handles. I already bent them out far enough to get them open, but you can still feel the latches underneath are badly bent, and you need to wiggle the latches to get them to open. My new handles are on top of my tool box, I didn't have time to change them yesterday, so that will have to be a Monday job.

I also have a 42" waterloo cabinet in my garage, but the international is definitely sturdier.

I am looking at possible purchasing a 54" International and was curious if the full-width drawers had any bracing throughout the center.

There was another review thread a while back. The op said there were & it was a lump under the liner. Not sure but iirc it wasn't the basic 5610 model.

Hi guys, I'm new to the garage journal. I have been doing some research lately and purchasing a new box. I currently have a Mac Tech1000 50" top and bottom and thinking about selling it and getting a 72" roughly, bottom only to have a workbench. I don't mechanic anymore, well with my tools anyway. I have a job that provides all my tools so my box sits a home now. My mechanics truck I drive has the quick latches on the drawers and have fallen in love with them. So, when I decided to change boxes, that was #1 on my list. #2 is how well the lock is mounted in the box. I had someone try and pop the lock on my Mac but were unsuccessful. I found strictlytoolboxes.com and liked what they had, mostly. They didn't have the drawer configuration I liked with the quick latches and not made in China. Did some more digging and found SPG International. Love that they are North American made. They have just what I'm looking for, quick latches, drawer configuration, and a second wide drawer, well on the PRO series. I do like the SHD series except the two sets of the same width wide drawers.

Now, to make a long story longer. I would like to know, if anyone knows, is how easy/hard would it be to knock out the lock of the PRO or the AND boxes. How is the lock assembly held in place? Is the steel reinforced in the lock area? I know the SHD is in the neighborhood of 30% heavier than the PRO. In the end, I'm really considering the PRO 7517. I like the sound of the customer service. How are the drawers on both boxes? Do they much flex while loaded in either box?

Thanks for any input.

My SHD series 54" has no additional bracing on the full width drawer. With the dual slides and heavier gauge construction it isn't a issue with my well loaded cab tho.

FWIW i would buy the box again in a heart beat, very happy with it.
