Got this Prentiss 19 1/2 today at an estate sale. It is in very good condition and was happy to see it still bolted to the bench. I did notice the patent date was stamped onto both jaws. Patented June 6 1911. I don't know if this was a common practice or not as I have never seen it or maybe just never looked close enough before.

A fellow who knows I buy vises, stopped at door this afternoon to sell me a couple of vises he had picked up.

One was an Erie Tool Works No. 106, while the other was a Columbian C44.

Worked on both of them till about dark.

First four pics are of the Erie No. 106.

Did discover when cleaning up the big vise, that it had a broke off section, which you can see in pic 4.

Still usable, but something I have to declare when I get around to selling it.

The last two pics are of the smaller vise (Columbian C44)

On it, the front handle was twisted pretty severely. Was able to get it as straightened out as I could without using a torch (i.e. which I don't have). It works as is, but won't slide from side to side like it should.

Still usable, but something I have to declare when I get around to selling it.

Mike

Good looking Prentiss 19-1/2

BTW, I've had two Prentiss 19-1/2's and each was extremely hard to move the dynamic jaws. Didn't know if I just ran into two of them that were that way or whether Prentiss machined them with too tight of tolerances.

Have you run into anything like that in working on this size of Prentiss?

Kind of slow night so how about some more of Demomans vises. His collection of eight inch vises has to be seen and touched. A few more pics. Reed 208R

Here is a Hollands 19. The 12 inch wide I - Beam looks pretty tiny and just wide enough for these vises.

How about a 8" Yost. I can not remember the model number without searching for a bit. Any one know what the ID is.

Here is a unique 8" Post vise, you can adjust the lower end with your foot to clamp evenly. This guy is a big un. Nice vise. Opens up pretty far too.

You are so right, I could not believe it was all there when i saw it. Someone could have easily taken the hardy cutter and mixed it in with whatever they were buying. Wish i could have met the guy who owned it before he passed away. He took such good care of everything I saw.

The jaws on both of your vises NJ Marty are in excellent shape. Nice vises you picked up today.

Shame the Dynamic support is broke on your Erie 106 Mike. That is a hard fix.

KMScott:

Agree with you on a hard fix on dynamic support on the Erie 106.

The one thing in it's favor as a user is the "monorail" slide that helps provide some support.

On a somewhat related topic, I have the chance to pick up a Morgan Chicago 60 (6" jaws), should be 143 lbs, has a fixed base. Looks to be in nice shape. Will set me back about $200. Thoughts on this vise? The price?

I already have a Record #6; haven't weighed it, but I'm thinking the Morgan will be stouter.
Scott

Got it this morning for $200, and the seller drove almost 2 hours to meet me! Pulled a muscle in my back loading it up, too!

Pics to follow. It's not NOS, but nothing broken. No deep gouges. Just some general wear. Has a new coat of red paint on it. Original jaws; they are serviceable, but will have to see if I can get new ones. Spindle handle isn't bent; think that's a first for me.

Will have to sit it on the bench next to my Record #6 (also 6" jaws). I know it will dwarf it.

What was the original color on the Morgan Chicago vises?

Speaking of color, I found some local hammered green that looks like a perfect match for the original Wilton color. Of course, I just finished painting both of my bullets, but it will only take a few minutes to re-do, I guess.

My 40's Morgan Chicago was originally black. Later Morgans were a royal blue, slighty lighter than your Record No 6.

I went to a sale today spying a rusty starrett athol 926. I bid until 450and let the other guy have it... now I am feeling remorse.

I bought this two pack for $40. I have no idea what the post vise is or is worth. The Parker is in worse shape than I had initially thought with a damaged base and damaged slide - maybe I'll rehome the screw and jaws to someone who needs them or maybe I'll see about making those bookends people post about.

How did I do? Does anyone know anything about the post vise? Can't see any identifiers under the paint and rust yet.

It's not mine, and I'm not planning on driving 4hrs to buy it, but what model Reed do the experts think this is?

The jaw shape looks like one of their "utility vise" models, but I thought most of those had the small anvil horn on the back?

Picked up a 3-1/2 inch jaw vise with center mount screw and only markings were cast number 441A and 441B.

Saw it referenced in GJ, but no Mfg has been attributed to it. Pics 1-3

Then at same sale, picked up a thin wall bent form vise. No name, but numbers make me wonder if it's produced for the military. Pics 4-6

I don't see many of this style of vise posted on here so I thought I would share these that I picked Friday . Also a little USA 3" bench clamp I scored today for a buck. The post style pipe vise are really a blast to restore. Quick and with nice results. I really like the look when finished. The three I picked are a Toledo, A Crown and a NYE. All are early 1900's and I don't believe any one makes this style any longer. Here they are along with an NYE I restored over the winter incase I didn't post it :dunno:

I just got back from a two vise pickup. It came from a sudden CL opportunity.

First up is a little 3 inch Fulton. Still has some original paint. Cute little vise, and my first Fulton.

IMG_1344 (Medium).jpg

The big one is a Wilton Tradesman 1760. Date Marked 5/94. Missing the pipe jaws but that is not a big problem. It will take some work to get it looking good again but I think I can do it.

IMG_1341 (Medium).jpg IMG_1342 (Medium).jpg IMG_1346 (Medium).JPG

I snagged both vises for $80 total.

Craftsman 5152: 1937-42 still has much of the original blue paint. 4" jaws, 41 lbs. No decal. Jaws tight and moved easily. Gonna have to clean this one up! $40.

Was at a flea market this am, saw this little vise and immediately looked for the s.heart logo. Just barely made something out through the grime and grease, and the guy said a few bucks. I didn't even look at the rest of the vise because I was busy getting the few he was asking for out of my wallet!

Eventually noticed the slide on my way home, but In my defense...it blended with the grime pretty well. Saw the handle. Figured it was a good candidate for trying easy off to clean things up. I do not care for this method, but this vise was caked from the years old grease and I wanted to get rid of my easy off!

Should have taken a before, but the after picture is all I have. Wasn't planning on posting about it. I used a lot of easy off, let it do its thing for a few hours, sprayed again, wiped it off.

Just thought I'd share an obvious overlook! It's been relitively slow around here. Yes, it was a sweetheart! Not like it matters! :)

It's a shame, because this is a very well built sharp looking little clamp on with great jaws. It's a 766.

Yup that *****, but you know to look at the top of the slide for the SH stamp as so many others pass these great vises up not knowing.

BP: so when you saw that Morgan 60 for the first time and had a close up view did your eyes pop open wide? Morgan is still in business so you can order new jaws if you need to from them, but they might cost close to what you paid for the vise. how about some 6 inch copper jaw covers?

nice find and congrats on your new purchase.

Marty: both those vises were great finds, but the old anvil drill press combo with the hardy cutter in great shape is amazing. good eye as per the norm for you.

GMan: I agree with VA that the old vise you posted is a Reed 214 or maybe a 214.5. it also looks like it has a huge braze weld on the dynamic so I wouldn't be driving 4 hours to buy it or have it shipped to me even though I don't have one of that model yet.

ALL: so I had a GJ member pick this Mastercraft XY table drill press vise for me a while back and he took it apart and made it fit inside a USPS flat rate box. i'm sure i'll get it back together, but what a cool little vise and it's going to sit on my Walker Turner DP nicely. i'll post up a few more pictures of the vise when I get it back together and mounted on my WT.

Thanks DOC

It makes my Record #6 look like a toy.

I'll check with Morgan on new jaws. I already have 6" copper jaw covers and some aluminum ones that I bought for my Record. They should work on the Morgan, too.

Thanks

Great find, especially with the hardie.

One of these days, will hit a sale where someone has collected all the missing hardies!!!

BTW, I do the same on keeping the original mounting bolts from vises as well.
