Would love some assistance with this. Came from the family farm, I know nothing about vises. All I know is I haven't seen one like it on the portion of this thread that I've managed to read. It would be nice to have something of value as opposed to all the worthless **** I've sorted through.

It's a Sheldon and although I don't have one like it, I have 3 other Sheldon's and they are good vises.

I think on your version, you can flip whatever end works best in the clamping process.

Al Bundy I can say it has value. How much cash value I don't know but the fact it came from the family farm is value enough in my book.
It is a dual vise as you would see, but unusual in that it has a metal working vise on one side and a woodworking vise on the other. Sheldon is a reasonable vise I have heard, never having seen one IRL. So I would definitely put it to work. The finish looks good and a simple clean and lube is all I would do.

I spoke to the buyer this morning, I will allow them the courtesy to reveal themselves. They were thrilled to get it. The seller got a ton of calls. There is a lot of interest in big steel, and yet my 7" Prentiss 23 swivel jaw gets no love on CL at $250.

Did you paint EVERYTHING? Usually just the main jaw and dynamic jaw (minus the machined portions) are painted and the rest is natural...

I couldn't get a shiny finish that I liked on it so I painted the whole vise, it is retired for display for the rest of my life at least. The Parker that sits opposite of it is painted similarly so this adds balance.

Crsinmich: this is a 46 1/2. I was fortunate enough to pick it up reasonably at a sale where a few other big name vises went for more than street value - I guess it was luck.

At lunch today I was lucky enough to finally get a jackhammer and get my base home for the rotating vise I picked up a couple weeks ago. This thing is just so awesome, height adjustable, rotating base, 360 degree rotating head.

Still no idea as to maker. Its going into the dip tank this week to remove paint. This WILL be BLO"d and baked.

JOE: so the 109 is coming up to VISE HEAVEN REGION in the US and I've got a good idea who might be the new owner. thanks for the heads up. I don't shop for vises on EBAY and maybe that keeps my vise addiction to a level I can sort of maintain. that said unless your Prentiss is broken or maybe the jaws are missing it should sell for that.

I couldn't find it listed and I looked up Viseman and got WISEMAN and I knew that wasn't the right guy.

I didn't say you bought the big 109 just that one of your sort of neighbors in Vise Heaven did. yes? or do you still NO NOTTING?

BTW I think you mentioned your Prentiss #23 is missing the jaws and maybe the ledges are broken which might have had something to do with not selling for $250? or do tell and maybe post up a few pictures because that is an awesome vise if it's in great shape.

So I was going through some old pictures on my phone and stumbled across this. Actually made me laugh a little. This is the tallest vise I own. Starrett 326. Really makes that 4 inch Prentiss look like a baby

Thanks for the responses guys. This particular item doesn't really have any sentimental value to me. I've kept plenty of stuff already. And I am a collector, but I don't collect vises. That being said, if anyone is interested, and if you could instruct me how to get this apart so it will go in a flat rate box I may move this down the road. I would rather someone that appreciates it have it than have it sit in the basement doing nothing. Feel free to send me a PM.

MEATSIS: just curious how tall your Starrett 326 is? i'm guessing about the same height as my Reed 4c and I can't recall how tall it is but think it's around 15 inches tall.

so is the Reed 109 going to look pretty big alongside your Starrett? just saying I think I have an idea where the Pittsburgh 109 is going to end up.

Al, its too big for a flat rate, as those are like 12 X 12 X 5-1/2 IIR. It looks to be over 12 in two dimensions, so likely even disassembled it will be oversize.

So size of box and its total weight by whatever shipper can be the cheapest. Fastenal was a good option, but I hear they now require crating on the pallet.

Too bad, I'd like a crack at it, but its 3000 away...

You may be right Outlaw. I'll measure it this morning and see. I'm still willing to ship it, the cost just won't be as attractive for a buyer.

WRENCH: was the slide cracked that I couldn't see or was that a weld on the dynamic under the jaws.

i made a serious offer and he sent pics of slide and jaw towers showing nice jaw serrations. i don't know anything about welds.

The Starrett is 17 inches tall. Weighs in at 225 pounds IIRC.

And no, the reed 109 isn't coming my way. I wish it was. If I had the money right now I probably would've taken the 5 hour ride to pick it up though. To me it looked like it was in great shape in the pictures. I don't see the crack in the slide that everyones talking about

VA: I wonder if you email the guy on EBay to post up some more pictures if he might be able to take a few from the other side. We all thought American Scale's #79 was the Wilton 600 SJ's maker. if that vise really is a Morgan that might be another option. why isn't that already yours or is it?

in case others don't recall the Wilton 600 SJ I found that is now part of your Chain Gang here are a few pictures.

Meatsis: thanks for the 411 on your Starrett and it's on my list to own some day. IIRC the Chain Gang has a couple of them in it's links. sorry to hear the Reed 109 isn't yours because Joe seems to know the buyer, but he KNOWS NOTHING concerning the new owner.

Based on my measurements I'm pretty sure it will go in a large flat rate, though it's close. I did get a PM about it, hopefully he'll make an offer since I have no idea what to ask.

Going to check it out tonight, he's asking $40. It does have Wiltonesque characteristics but I'll report back.

So I have the opportunity to buy a Wilton C3 that came out of a government shop that opened up in the 40's. It seems to be in mint condition. The only issue I see is the rear section. What do you guys think? Pin snapped? It's been a long time since I've had a Wilton apart. I had a C3 a few years ago. But sold it before disassembling it. What do the Wilton experts of GJ think? Looks like a broken pin issue but tough not being able to put hands on it to know for sure. If it's just the pin then should be an easy fix.

Meatsis: looks like the pin on the C3 is missing or it could still be in the vise nut if the double pin. do you get to look at the vise before bidding on it? the swivel nuts don't looks like stock, but easily made. the main problem i've noticed with the older C3's is the swivel bases usually were broken, but you'd have to turn on it's side or upside down to see that because it was normally the inside part that would break.

i think the C series Wiltons are their best quality vises so you have my vote to try to get a deal on that one. I wouldn't pay the same money for a C3 that i would for your Starrett 326, but they do sell for more at times.

Meatsis you should already have that C3 if the price agrees with you. Easy fix, even if you have to open the pins to 9/32 or 5/16.

Meatsis: if the casting is ok on the vise nut and the end of the vise that is partially out KM is right the pin is easy. also if you might want to make taking it apart easier later for yourself or the new owner if you sell it a few of the members have put in set screws in place of a pin. they tapped into the cast and a few wrote up how they did it on the Vise Repair 101 thread.

KM: i bet your original measurement for your stand you are building was pretty close or did you have to use a different height?

Found 4 cracks in one of my newly acquired Wiltons. Is this a normal spot for them to crack? One on each side two on bottom. I have another with no swivel, no end cap and bad jaws so I will build one good one between the two.

That's what I figured. If it's just a matter of replacing or installing a pin it's definitely no big deal. The problem is I'm a few hours away from it so I can't actually get my hands on it to examine it. I tried asking the seller, but he doesn't seem to really understand what I'm asking him.

Yes cracks like that are usually caused by putting pressure on the Dynamic Jaw Support like bending steel towards the front and using a heavy hammer or just beating something with a sledge hammer. I would use the parts off that Static Support 02Super.
